Music and dance in the Twin Cities at the Walker Art Center continues to not only be the best source for witnessing and experiencing incredible talent from around the world but also remains as one of

The largely positive reception of Wilco's The Whole Love , and its respectable sales just a few days after its release (it holds the number two spot on iTunes, just behind Adele's 21 ), seems to indicate what may be a temptation in recent years to grade the veteran indie group on a kind of sliding scale. This may be in part because of their prolific career — they have put out albums on a semi-regular basis, after all, for the last 16 years, not counting live recordings. To be fair, none of their records are glaringly deficient in any [...]

Glenn Kotche is a busy man, as you might expect from the 41 st best drummer of all time, as decided by Gigwise in 2008. If he isn't jugging drumsticks and tambourines, it's a three-year-old and a one-year-old. ("Either way, my hands are always full...") When The Line of Best Fit calls him at his Chicago home, he's buzzing. Wilco , the band he's been a member of for a decade, are about to release their eighth album, and their fifth with Kotche at the helm. The Whole Love was [...]
Wilco 's new LP "The Whole Love" get some kind words from indie rap sheet Pitchfork today, and in the review, Pitchfork writes about the LP's opening track "Art of Almost": As soon as opener "Art of Almost" whirrs to a start, you'll know something has changed. A glitchy motorik groove crashes into swarming strings before giving way to a slippery Tweedy melody; then it's elegant bass ooze and keyboard creep, over which Nels Cline drapes a searing kosmische capper. Fraught and foreboding, the song is easily the most daring thing they've put to [...]

EDM By Charlotte Gay EDM - the band formerly known as Early Day Miners - release their new album Night People on September 5th on Western Vinyl in the UK and Europe. As they geared up to release a record that has seen not just a name change, but also seemingly a change in approach to the way they write and record their music, the band answered a series of questions from us via email. For those [...]
The final day of Solid Sound served as a showcase for Wilco members' side and solo project. The crowd arrived early to line up for drummer Glenn Kotche's solo set in the Hunter theater. A brief opening set from Darin Gray (whom Kotche plays with in On Fillmore ) on prepared bass guitar provided a rude awakening for the tightly packed, standing room only crowd. Gray pushed the limits of tolerance for mid-day discord, unleashing a tense set of noisy, high volume experiments that saw him attacking his modified bass with finger cymbals among other [...]

Buke & Gass at MHOW in May ( more by Amanda Hatfield ) We forgot a show in our recent roundup of Wilco - related happenings . Jad Abumrad of Radiolab is hosting Radiolab Concerts: Curious Sounds on Saturday (6/18) at the NYU Skirball Center . The event will feature Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche (Wilco), Buke & Gass , and a " special mystery performer " (anyone [...]

While we already knew that Wilco are busy recording their follow-up to 2009's Wilco (The Album) at their Chicago studio, a fun bit of news arrived moments ago via the band's official Facebook page , confirming that LP8 is set to arrive within the year. Something tells me that a lot more than one person are about to "Like" this: The first string of said "many, many concert dates" have been posted on their official site, as well as a collection of exciting HQ photos from the [...]
After releasing 3 albums via Reprise, 5 with Nonesuch, and 2 collaborative LPs with Billy Bragg of songs formed from Woody Guthrie lyrics on Elektra, Wilco finally have their very own record label: The Los Angeles Times ' Pop & Hiss reports that "all future Wilco recordings and more" will be released via their new imprint, dBpm Records, with distribution and marketing handled by L.A. indie Anti- Records. "We really like doing things ourselves, so having our own label feels pretty natural to me," said Jeff Tweedy. "And, to be working with Anti- [...]

¿verdad?. Pero bueno, no lo [...]
You can count on Jim O'rourke to keep surprising the world with another fantastic, well written and produced album. Even with his most experimental stuff, he always knew to find his own unique voice, let alone with his 'songs' albums like the brilliant 1999 Eureka. But it looks like that the anticipation from every new O'rourke [...]

Last Thursday night, we stopped in to Le Poisson Rouge to check out Glenn Kotche and Darin Gray's project On Fillmore , in one of their rare live appearances. After talking with the band last week , we couldn't have been more excited to see what was in store for us. Going into the show, we didn't know what to expect, but when we left we had been rewarded a show that was so dynamic, it almost defied description. Fun, experimental, technical, diverse, immersive; all of these words could be used to describe the awesomeness [...]

As previously mentioned , Glenn Kotche and Darin Gray will be bringing their two-man act On Fillmore to Le Poisson Rouge tonight as part of a small East Coast tour. As they drove out for the shows, Glenn and Darin were kind enough to give us a call from the road and bring us up to date on what to expect from the band, as well as some insights on where they're going with their distinctive sound. With Darin backing him up from the driver's seat, this is our conversation with Glenn. Enjoy! [...]

Glenn Kotche performing with Wilco, from the HAD Archive While we know Glenn Kotche most intimately from his performances and work with Wilco, it certainly should not go unnoticed that he also has a diverse body of other work. In addition to his wonderful solo records, one of Kotche's most notable projects is his collaboration with bassist Darin Gray, On Fillmore . The pair have been releasing records for almost eight [...]

Okay, it's time to put our hyping of Jim O'Rourke's new Burt Bacharach covers record to rest. But not without one more streaming cut from his brilliant tribute album to end all tribute albums. The opening track off All Kinds of People ~Love Burt Bacharach~ features Wilco's Glenn Kotche on the drums, O'Rourke, and Haruomi Hosono playing Bacharach's "(They Long to Be) Close to You," a song that managed to top charts for the likes of Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, and, most famously, the Carpenters. Let's sing post this [...]
Well, not really - Roberto and JR nailed down the details pretty well and I'm not typically one for remembering that "that one note on that one song..." But holy crappamolie that was a killer concert - so here are my quick hits: 1) Glenn Kotche is a heckofa drummer. My two blogging chronies are axe-men so their Nels Cline fawning isn't surprising, or unmerited. But as a drummer with lofted seats, my aerial view afforded me perfect fixation on Glenn's movements for the first third of the show. Those interested can check out his Wilco kit [...]
Jim O'Rourke on tuottanut tribuuttilevyn All Kinds Of People -- Love Burt Bacharach . 11 Bacharachin sävellystä sisältävällä levyllä on O'Rourken lisäksi olleet mukana mm. Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) ja Glenn Kotche (Wilco). Moore on tehnyt yllättävänkin keveän version klassikosta (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me . www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY0-Ld Nf96c [...]

Back in February, we were the first U.S. site to bring you news of Jim O'Rourke's new Burt Bacharach tribute album, All Kinds of People ~Love Burt Bacharach~, which features performances by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, O'Rourke himself, Wilco/ Loose Fur 's Glenn Kotche on the drums, and many more. Though the record dropped exclusively in Japan last week ( check out 45-second snippets here or purchase the album via iTunes Japan ), streaming below is Thurston Moore's cover of the song made famous by Lou [...]

I was enjoying Wilco's live webcast from Boston, MA tonight when, out of the blue, Jeff Tweedy unveiled a huge scoop to the masses: Wilco will host their very own festival this summer. Dubbed the Solid Sound Festival , Wilco's three-day fest will take place outdoors at Massachusetts' MoCa (MA Museum of Contemporary Art) on August 13-15 in North Adams. In addition to performances by Wilco, Autumn Defense, On Fillmore, Pronto, and the Nels Cline Singers, MASS MoCA says : Festival goers will be able to participate in [...]
