Glenn Miller (1904-1944) was an American jazz musician, his instrument was the trombone. He was also a composer, arranger, and bandleader during the swing era - one of the hippest and most enviable eras from last century. He enjoyed the most success in the early '40s until his untimely death as a MIA military casualty over the English Channel during WWII while traveling to entertain US troops. In today's One Note/One Phrase I take a look at his classic composition Moonlight Serenade, which heavily features the clarinet. The recording is Glenn Miller and his Orchestra featuring Willie Schwartz [...]
Come è nata l'idea? E successo tutto esattamente 70 anni fa, [...]

Glenn Miller has made several appearances on the GMC, and we've also featured Ray McKinley ( In The Footsteps Of Glenn Miller ) , who took over Miller's reconstituted band in later years. But there was another guy who sort of latched on to the Miller bandwagon; Ralph Flanagan, who led a band that was known for its 'Glenn Miller Sound'. Born as Ralph Elias Flenniken in Lorain, Ohio (near Cleveland), the budding musician was also an honor student while in high school. Within a few years of graduation he was [...]

Although his name might not be a familiar one to casual jazz fans, British musical prodigy Victor Feldman was a much-respected instrumentalist for many years. His career encompassed everything from playing drums for Glenn Miller (at age 10!) to heading up ground-breaking jazz groups of his own. Along the way he appeared alongside many of the greatest names in jazz. It all started in wartime London. Feldman's father had founded the Feldman Swing Club, and young Victor was playing drums on stage with his brothers when he was just seven. He gained quite a bit of fame [...]

If you're wondering what the first Evocations of the Dance post was, click here to find out. The opening of Eudora Welty's Powerhouse (1941) is one of those masterful pieces of writing you come up with in your dreams but which on real paper seem to elude you: He's here on tour from the city – "Powerhouse and His Keyboard" – "Powerhouse and His Tasmanians" – think of the things he calls himself! There's no [...]

Following on from the post about rock & roll in A History of Country Vol. 8, here are three originals of rock & roll classics. Incidentally, I might have used in the past images from www.originalsproject.us , which I would have sourced elsewhere. Indeed, the image that accompanies the original for Blueberry Hill, which I found on another site, is from that brilliant site. * * * Swing And Sway With Sammy Kaye - Blueberry Hill (1940).mp3 Glenn Miller and his Orchestra [...]

I've written before about a couple of movies that told the Hollywood version of the lives of two stars from the big band era - The Benny Goodman Story and The Glenn Miller Story (video below) - but something occurred to me today. Each film included a number of real musicians from the era appearing as themselves but at least one guy was in both movies, and his portrayal was an accurate one. Ben Pollack played a bandleader who helped give a start to both Glenn and Benny, and it was a role he [...]

I have to admit that the title of this piece represents an assumption on my part, but I would guess it's probably accurate. Since the Modernaires played an important role in the band's success during Glenn Miller's biggest years, you'd have to draw that conclusion, even if he might have secretly coveted Tommy Dorsey's Pied Pipers. Three buddies in Buffalo started the Modernaires in 1935, although they didn't call themselves that when they first began performing with bands. Hal Dickinson, Chuck Goldstein, and Bill Conway performed as the Don Juan Three at times, and a little later [...]
Glen Miller - In The Mood I admit, to leave the lax countryside behind and take any part in the taut city streets is somewhat demanding. I just have to be in the mood and the moment can't be sprung upon me – I need time to adjust to the thought. My own quirk, my own failing. It just doesn't appeal until I'm there, until I'm in the swim. Still, today, lovingly forced to take adventure, I finally advanced towards Oscar Wilde's memorial at Merrion Square where he sits alone and aloft a stone [...]

I've always been a train buff, and since I'm also a fan of big-band music it stands to reason that one of my favorite songs of all time would be Glenn Miller's "Chattanooga Choo-Choo." I especially like the long version, which includes a 'jive' reprise. That performance, which features Dorothy Dandridge (who was just 18 at the time) and the Nicholas Brothers, is available below as an excerpt from the the 1941 film, Sun Valley Serenade . But even though Miller's version was number-one on the charts in 1941 (and won the recording industry's first-ever [...]

I'm sure I've already spoken many times about the influence my parents had on my music taste growing up, but I'd be remiss if I didn't discuss the impact my grandparents had on how much I love music as well. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to have an incredibly close extended family that I spent a great deal of time with (aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents), and most of that time was spent together at my father's parents' house, which was as cool as any kid could hope for. The summers were spent in the backyard, [...]

I was once again going through some old pictures, and ran across one of myself lined up with the other members of my Boy Scout troop. (I'm the last one in the middle row.) It would date from the early 1950s, and I think we were arranged that way because we were practicing drilling, one of the many activities our scoutmaster tried out to keep us from turning into a mob. I doubt that we were in any danger of becoming a precision drill squad, but just about the time we [...]

There's a great article in the New York Times about the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin. We've never been, but it's on the top of a long list. In time. In time. MP3: Art Garfunkel - I Shall Sing MP3: Glenn Miller - On, Wisconsin! (For Heidi Bird)

Made this mix for The Duchess right after Duke Jr. was born. The Dairy Barn was my nickname for the breastfeeding mother. Of course, while she was pregnant, I called her The Vessel .
