The World Without Us is a strikingly beautiful and tremendously dark release that achieves its fullest potential in the instrumental segments. The World Without Us is a strikingly beautiful and tremendously dark release that achieves its fullest potential in the instrumental segments. Opening with "Still (I) [Version]", it immediately brought to mind David Wingo's outstanding Take Shelter score by presenting something both intimate and suspense-driven. The World Without Us doesn't manage to achieve those heights again with its remaining seven tracks, though it comes admirably close. Where it falters is in the vocals, which are almost...
This week's PVS is a band I'm particularly fond of, Glissando , performing an abridged version of its magisterial "Floods" at a London Chapel. The song is slow and brooding — all we have is a pair of gorgeous voices, a slow piano and a guitar for coloring — but it's very lovely all the same. The duo also have a few new songs on their Myspace, which are very more full-band oriented. They have all the beauty of the group's earlier tracks plus a wealth of new instruments to beef it up. In other [...]

As the sun makes a rather enthusiastic apperance at long fucking last, and our garden finally begins to bloom, I can think of little I would like to do so little as sitting in a dingy club listening to whiney indie kids complain about how shit their life is and how no-one really understands them. The Edinburgh weather is depressingly fickle however, so presumably by this afternoon it will be absolutely bucketing it down with rain, but for now the only thing I would really recommend you do this week is spend as much time outside as possible, [...]

we're only afraid of NYC This week we have not one but two Scottish bands that I have been really enjoying, first up is the wonderfully named 'we're only afraid of NYC'. They gave their debut EP away for free a couple of months ago, it was good, and now they're doing the same with their second EP. In my opinion this is better, much better in fact. It's not just me that rates them, the lovely Lauren Laverne has been playing them on her 6Music show last week. The EP is available to download now on their [...]

This week's job is the finishing of the Honeytrap Toad Session, preparing the second Toad House Gig for Friday - brilliant brilliant brilliant! - sort of getting ready for the Toad Autumn Party at the Bowery on the 10th (Pineapple Chunky madness, woo!) and getting the Meursault singles pressed and the artwork sorted. If I am dead by the weekend, do not be surprised. Fortunately, the start of the week is relatively light on gigs. Lightish anyway. Tonight is free, so I should get a chunk done then. I just fear the traditional upload hell which tends to [...]

Gizeh Records is a Leeds based record label run by Richard Knox. Rich is also one half of Trampoline favourites Glissando and runs a successful PR company called Sleepsound. I'm not sure when Gizeh actually came to be but when I first met Rich the only 2 bands on the label were Her Name Is Calla and Glissando. Since then I have seen Gizeh go from being a very small D.I.Y label to being named as Radio One's record label of the week. and I for one could not be happier for him. Rich is one of the [...]

Glissando - Floods MP3 Glissando - Passenger Seat (Death Cab for Cutie cover) MP3 Speechless. Just beauty. Over 13 minutes pure beauty. And when you expect them to end, it really begins. I'm captured! New album comes in June. Until then, hear Floods and the captivating version of DCFC's Passenger Seat here.

Glissando have announced plans to tour the UK in the early part of 2009. Dates: December 13th LEEDS Holy Trinity Church 20th LONDON Union Chapel (12.15pm) January 29th YORK City Screen Basement 30th LEEDS Packhorse 31st NORTHAMPTON Labour Club February 1st NOTTINGHAM Lee Rosy's 2nd [...]

New Wax I must admit that when I gave the new Glissando album its first spin, I feared another bland entry from the increasingly homogenized post-rock factory. Sometimes it’s great to be wrong. Fresh from Gizeh’s UK presses, Glissando’s With Our Arms Wide Open We March Towards the Burning Sea feels austere and glacial; it will move you, however slowly. To delightful effect, much of the album vacillates between Richard Knox’s desolate key arrangements and Elly May Irving’s haunting vocals, though trombone, guitar, percussion, spoken word, [...]

The Silent Ballet: Volume 8 Spring 2008 After several compilations romping through various related fields, Volume VIII returns to what this compilation series began with in Volume I, bringing the post-rock hits. The current edition brings together tracks from some current albums we’re enjoying at the TSB headquarters and ones that should be making some huge waves [...]
