Global Communication - 76:14 (1994) I had a bit of a battle with myself over whether this should be included, not because it lacked quality but because I undertook a piece of writing for Acid Ted a couple of years ago extolling its virtues, so I wondered if its place here was therefore rendered somewhat redundant. And then I thought, well, bollocks, who cares? It's a great album and it deserves to be here and discarding it because of the risk of repetition seems harsh. Ticking all the usual boxes for [...]

If this site wasn't named 'A Strangely Isolated Place', it would probably be called, "76.14″. Without a doubt, the legends behind one of my favourite ambient/electronic albums of all time, Global Communication are an elusive pair nowadays. I had to pass up on a a rare gig not too long ago at the British Library because it was my girlfriends birthday (priorities eh?!) and these sets from Hayhook make it just that little bit worse – once again reminding me just how talented Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard are. From the sublime ambient take on Slowdive, to the [...]

Consisting of Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard, Global Communication are one of the most successful, influential, critically acclaimed and overall grad electronic music acts that England ever gave the world. Loving monikers and as many musical styles as one can think of, Global Communication took the roots from Detroit, soundtracks, European techno, US-American house, hip hop and all kinds of soulful music to come up with their own fruits. Working as Link & E621, Reload, Jedi Knights or The Chameleon, they released music on Warp, LTJ Bukem's Good Looking Records, Dedicated or their own Evolution / Universal Language imprint - [...]

When Global Communication — Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard — reunited earlier this year after a 15-year hiatus to produce the splendid Back in the Box compilation for NRK, many diehard fans' prayers had finally been answered. The release shines the spotlight on music that influenced the duo and arrives when elements of '90s club culture are beginning to infiltrate contemporary dance floors. Big Shot caught up with Middleton during a visit to New York and asked him to talk about the duo's long-awaited release.

"It's a warm, immersive selection comprised entirely of their own work – as GC and also such aliases as Jedi Knights, Secret Ingredients and Reload – and it takes in deep techno, low-slung hip-hop, sinewy sci-fi electro, ambient jungle and other vectors into the unknown. Having reunited this year after a long hiatus, the duo of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton is rightfully and righteously reasserting its status as one of the most vital and multi-faceted production units to come out of the rave era." Tracklist: 1. Global Communication – Obselon Minos 2. Reload – Ptyzh 3. Reload [...]
Mark & Tom head to Cable in September for We Love Silence special...

The recent news that Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard would be reviving their Global Communication project for some DJ and live sets brought a massive smile to my face and sent me rushing back to listen to their amazing "76:143 album for the first time in years. It's an absolutely amazing piece of work and still sounds as fresh and amazing today as it dd when it first arrived it in the mid 902s. It's beautifully layered melodies weave through track after track of amazing ambience and it's rarely been [...]

[ NRK Sound Division ] ( buy CD ) (buy mp3s tk) If your only point of reference for Global Communication is a 76 minute and 14 second long ambient album that is 17 years old, you may not be prepared for this two-CD mix. The duo of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton may well be most famous for their sole album as GC, but they wore many hats before and after; coming up with futuristic techno mutations as Reload, electro funk revivalists as The Jedi Knights and deep house under the [...]
Seminal duo return to mix the latest installment of NRK's 'Back in The Box' series

I know nothing about Softballets. But an album of remixes by luminaries such as Global Communication, The Black Dog and Carl Craig was a must buy. Discgs says that "Softballet disbanded in 1995. They were: Ryoichi Endo[vocals], Ken Morioka [keyboards, programming] and Maki Fujii [guitars, programming]. Soft Ballet's music was a mix of hard-edged, aggressive industrial synth lines, techno beats, heavy guitar riffs, German speech samples and strong, yet affectionate vocals." That's fine but the featured tracks from 1995's "Forms: Remixes for Ordinary People" are nothing like that description. They are delicate pieces [...]

Stereo People is Joshua Michaels (aka Joshua Iz). Biog : Joshua (Iz) Michaels was born on a 120 º (40º C) day in 1969, the same day the first manned Apollo mission blasted off to the moon. Growing up just outside of Chicago in Oak Park, he was influenced early by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright who was based there, as well as the culturally rich city itself. Taking piano lessons from age five, he quit at age eight so as to be able to [...]

Reload were Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton, aka the incredible Global Communication. This is top notch UK electronica or IDM from the early 90s. As discogs says: "Reload was originally a Mark Pritchard solo project. Later Tom Middleton joined Mark on some of his Reload releases, and "& E621" (the name of a chemical flavour enhancer) was added to specify Middleton's involvement/flavour enhancement on a track (similar to the set-up with "Link & E621"). As Tom became more heavily involved on the Reload "A Collection of Short Stories" album, the [...]

This is yet another pseudonym for Mark Pritchard & Tom Middleton, best known as Global Communication (and who featured a little while ago as Jedi Knights). E621 is a chemical "Flavour Enhancer". Link was originally a Mark Pritchard solo project. In a similar set-up to "Reload & E621", the "E621" refers to Tom Middleton's co-production or "Flavour Enhancement" on the release. They released a solitary single under this name - 1995's "Antacid" on Warp Records. This had a remix from Wish Mountain ( Matthew Herbert ) and the Jedi Knights remix says "DJ Mercs droppin science [...]

Final post on the Grid to round up a few remixes of their work by a range of artists. On of the Grid's earliest singles was "A Beat Called Love"(1990). Coming out just before the classic "Floatation", this started to build their reputation. It has a Boys Own connection, with remixes by Farley & Heller. Next, 1993's "Crystal Clear". This was a great single with some really strong mixes by The Orb. This is probably the only of the Grid's release that is remembered with any affection today. It's been featured on [...]
Thank you. I love you and all your musical goodness.

Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock...a few minutes into this record and my head is nodding in simpatico with the metronomic sound that intros this classic 1994 long player from Global Communication. Halfway through and I'm almost nodding off entirely, horizontal on my bed and going nowhere fast, having abandoned any attempt to jot down notes, my eyelids drooping and my mind melting slowly away. There are no song titles here because, according to the inner sleeve, 'numbers are chosen to [...]
