[Quick reviews of a whole slew albums I received late in the year and didn't get a chance to acknowledge:] The Stevenson Ranch Davidians , "Life & Death" (self-released) — The L.A. quartet's sophomore release has all the fuel for a psych-pop burner — gently rolling melodies, gorgeous guitar textures, plenty of allusions and excursions to the cosmos — but the L.A. quartet never puts the pedal to the metal. "Life & Death's" Verve-meets-the-Byrds-in-slow- motion vibe is almost maddening at [...]

Based in Los Angeles, California, Globes on Remote was formed in 2008 and named after an event that can never be retold in print. Members of Globes on Remote are Stephen Andrews, Tawny Carson, Kevin Ignatius, and Daniel Medina. Aside from Carson (the only member actually from LA,) the remaining members come from small towns: St. Augustine, Florida, Warren, Pennsylvania, and Winters, California. All mad about music from an early age, the four members collaboratively sing and play instruments that range from guitars and synthesizers to megaphones, trumpets, and a euphonium [...]

When you first hear that Globes on Remote are from L.A., you are almost certainly gonna say aloud, "Of course they are from L.A. - they couldn't be from anywhere else!" The quirky space kitsch pop band, from the glammy twee to the characterological narratives, oozes a City of Angels aura that can't be missed. The band's entire recent debut, The Woo Hoo Hoo , is infused with the Spacelab meets Kids Incorporated and MST3k vibe, but it is particularly noticeable on "Space Camp ." A formulaic pop song, the track gains extra cred and [...]
Sunny California might be the last thing on MAGNET's mind right now, as our hometown of Philadelphia descends further and further into the winter doldrums. Thankfully, the Los Angeles-based Globes On Remote can warm even the chilliest cynic with its ambitious, dreamy West Coast pop. Reminscent of MGMT's greatest moments, "Dt. Lipps" is effervescently catchy [...]

What a spirited little dose of experimental pop Globes On Remote have offered up with their strangely titled debut album The Woo Hoo Hoo . It's a fun collection of spaced out and dizzy pop songs with a highly positive outlook. This LA based group manages to bring together the styles of Michael Jackson, Radiohead, and even The Killers together (FINALLY!!) to create songs that are fun and exhilarating in nature. With so much going on as far as noise and space-filling, you may feel like an 8 year old kid lost in Disneyland. [...]

This edition of the Graboid is all about the unknown, as I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't heard about many of these releases (I haven't, at least). Though, there are a few notable names scattered throughout including MF Doom and Ola Podrida . There is one album that I highly recommend checking out, which is Received Pronunciation , the fourth release from Pants Yell! which also marks their debut with Slumberland Records. As always, feel free to recommend anything I may have left off! [...]

Netter Space-Disco-Pop! Link zur Band-Website MP3-Download Globes on Remote «Space camp»
Boy, am I a sucker for songs about astronauts. Globes On Remote - Space Camp. Well, aside from "Looking For Astronauts" by The National. Ugh. But this one? It's really fun. It's a little synth-pop number about going into outer space, and from those synths to the Wayne Coyne-like vocals, it's got everything it needs. It reminds me of the recent Target Market track "Space Tourist", which Laptop Battery, one of our favorite spambot commenters, called "Everything is very open and very clear explanation of issues". Man, it's like I'm not even necessary! This song is from Globes On Remote's...

Orders from the Fire Marshal sent the marathon Fauxchella festival packing from the announced Traction Ave. venue earlier in the week, but by showtime on Good Friday organizers had moved the event to gamier precincts many blocks away. Hangar 1018 is beloved of the downtown party set and I know the space well, having wandered along its sketchy and verminous stretch of S. Santa Fe many times in various states of hallucinogenic inebriation. Inside, instead of the usual haul of faux-fur and near-naked ladies, were a couple hundred gamboling on the fragments of their Eastside Cool. I was waved past [...]
