![[Thursday Throwback] Junkyard Band – The Word](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4272233_lg.jpg)
The Junkyard Band was Def Jam's only go-go signing that I personally know about (there might have been others, but I have too much going on today to properly sit down and research it). The 123 they dropped way back in 1986 of "The Word" b/w "Sardines" is a blisteringly crunchy track you'll hear pop up from time to time in mixtapes, random live DJ sets or that you might just stumble over. It's funky, progressive, and extremely political; this is music that was meant to talk shit about the quality of life poor [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Getty Images Chuck Brown , pioneer of Washington D.C.'s go-go funk scene, died earlier today at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. He was 75. Brown, who is best known for his hit "Bustin' Loose" (interpolated on Nelly 's 2002 single "Hot in Herre"), had apparently been ill for some time , and was hospitalized with pneumonia on April 18. Brown's career [...]

This is a tough one… If you aren't from the DMV, or don't know about our culture, it's hard to really explain how much he meant to the city. Chuck was our hometown hero. The man responsible for DC's own sound, Chuck was a real-life legend. From the outpour of celebrity Tweets today, it's easy to see how respected he was within the industry, but at no point was Chuck too big for Chocolate City. From the Lotto jingles, to the sold-out shows, to the Ben's Chili Bowl appearances, Chuck embodied our city to the fullest. [...]

It's been a horrible month for musical passings . Rest in Peace, Chuck Brown and thank you for your endless contributions to funk, hip-hop and the go-go movement.
Filed under: News , Exclusive Getty | Getty A lot of people might say that their mom is a rock star. But for a smaller portion of the population, their mom actually is a rock star. In honor of Mother's Day , and all of the figuratively and literally rocking moms out there, we'd like to salute five of our favourite musical matriarchs. And, for those of you [...]
Filed under: News Hulton Archive Back in 1999 Time Magazine selected Bob Marley & the Wailers ' Exodus as the greatest album of the 20th century. It was a fitting honor for a man whose music arguably defines a whole genre. But Bob Marley's influence extends beyond one album and musical genre. Marley-ism is a cultural phenomenon and Marley [...]
In 2007, Hole gay drummer Patty Schemel went up to her friend P. David Ebersole with a bunch of Hi8 tapes she shot over her years with the band. Amazing footage of Hole members Eric Erlandson, Melissa Auf der Maur, late bassist Kristen Pfaff and Courtney Love, her husband Kurt Cobain and daughter Frances Bean. [...]
Upcoming friday (Feb 9) is the international woman's day - Therefor the guys from amazing Sasazu Club in Prague (Czech Republic) organised some topless gogo-dancers and invited us to play a one-hour set at prime time! As the club is a bit mainstreamy with DJ's like Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk and Armin Van Duuren, and [...]

The Go-Go's were my first favorite band. I was nuts about Beauty and the Beat and I drove my Mom crazy with it. My first favorite band soon lead into my first pop music magazine, first poster in bedroom, first concert, etc. My room, including my ceiling was top to bottom, left to right Go-Go's. [...]

Great songs deserve great videos, Arcadion the inventor of the Future Go-Go style fucking crushes it. I can't and won't stop talking about this dude. Go look up Arcadion and Hungryghost and download everything he has done, trust me your funk button will be pressed.

Trouble Funk are no strangers to this blog, check out this re-edit we banged up recently. Trouble Funk - Still Smokin (AGFA Re-Edit) by ALL GOOD FUNK ALLIANCE
When we think of the women rockers of the 802s there are a lot of cool ones to call your favorite. For my money, Gina Schock of The Go-Go's was always right up there. Though known best as the beat keeper for likely the biggest all-girl band in history, Schock's story as a musician is all that and more; starting as a teenage drummer in Baltimore playing with, among others, John Waters' protege Edith Massey and finishing, as a seasoned musician, penning tween-pop hits for the likes of Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. Oh [...]

Now that I have a great turntable and pre-amp, I've been visiting the archives to see which albums and singles deserve to be re-recorded and re-posted. Obviously, the soundtrack to Urgh! A Music War was one of the first on the list. These new recordings sound light-years better than my last attempt, and I highly recommended you download them even if you have an older copy I posted. I've talked about Urgh! several times over, so I'll keep the intro brief. It's an amazing document of a time period in music, when the punk [...]
During their initial run in the 1980s, The Bangles were labeled by some critics as a poor man's version of the Go-Go's. It seemed unfair to me. After all, hadn't their three albums – 1984's All Over the Place , 1986's Different Light and 1988's Everything – produced poppy, progressively commercial tracks such as "Hero Takes a Fall," "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Eternal Flame"? And hadn't Prince himself been so impressed by "Hero" that he wrote the popular "Manic Monday" for the second album? The Bangles had their own sound; the only [...]
Hear The Track HereA review request from the Rebelriffs blog now, this time from Northern Ireland in particular and Derry in general. Not a huge amount of information around about this four piece band but judging by the publicity stuff coming with this EP, this release is considered to be a move into a 'edgier, heavier sound' You KNOW that is going to go down well with me and you'd be surprised

Today's topic: pop hits -- or songs that should have been. Katy Perry and Rihanna can rack up No. 1 singles in their sleep. Between them, they've had 16 in the last six years. But the leading ladies of pop haven't always had it so easy. Here are five of the most egregious examples currently in heavy rotation on my iPod. 1) Susanna Hoffs: "My Side of the Bed" Considering how hot the Bangles were in the late '80s, one might have expected the 1991 debut solo single from the band's lead singer to have [...]
