by Bill Pearis In addition to the four-day extravaganza happening May 30 - June 2 , the good folks at NYC Popfest are also putting on a Northside Fest showcase at Spike Hill on June 15 . The night is headlined by someone I am personally super-excited about: The Jazz Butcher . Pat Fish has put out records under variations of the name since the mid-'80s, making droll, often heartfelt VU-inspired guitar pop with a rotating cast of [...]

Record store - Gold-Bears Download: 01-record-store.mp3 Oh, i had a song in my head this morning. It was this one. It's really good. I'm really busy. I think i'm moving.

So natural - Gold-Bears Download: 02-so-natural.mp3 I'm kind of jealous of the Gold-Bears. They have this sense of melody very similar to what was going to be my thing [...]

Photo by Jason Frank Rothenberg THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Battles w/ Nisennenmondai Friday, October 28 The Masquerade - 695 North Avenue in Atlanta 30306 Admission $18 / Purchase Tickets I can't think of a more innovative rock band to emerge in the last decade than New York-based, Battles . I put the emphasis on rock because for all their experimentation and rhythmic ingenuity, the never strays too far from the traditional rock template. At [...]
A 12-track sampler of the best stuff Slumberland Records has had to offer in 2011, stretching from the new Brilliant Colors album to the LP Crystal Stilts dropped back in April. Enjoy!

About a week ago Atlanta's Gold-Bears let it be known via their Twitter feed that people should check out fellow Atlantans Small Reactions . I follow Gold Bears for a reason, so I clicked the link. Cue cracking songs with buzzing guitars and big hooks (I'm such a sucker for this kind of thing). I'm hooked and a nascent super-fan after one song. Small Reactions have been around for a few years but only released their first single (self-released) late last year which you can download for free over at their Bandcamp [...]

Tweet With a blitzkrieg opening salvo of kick and snare, Gold-Bears signal their intent: they’re not here to mess around. On the opening track to their new LP (out now on Slumberland), this Atlanta group cranks up the energy and doesn’t bother to look back. At times anthemic, ‘Record Store’ combines acoustic guitar licks, distortion, and cymbal crashes to eke out a place at the three-way intersection of indie rock, pop, and punk on the sonic map. The band keeps the energy up during [...]
In nearly every album made, there are moments of silence. Whether it’s in between the verses or the songs themselves, these little nuggets give the listener time to absorb and process what they’ve just heard. Gold-Bears apparently have no interest in such concepts since their debut, Are You Falling In Love? , doesn’t let up for a second. Constant noise streams through the speakers for all of 33 minutes. If that wasn’t bad enough, none of these fuzzy punk songs have any distinguishing qualities. They all fall under a wall of noise. “Record Store” opens [...]
I really wanted to enjoy this video a whole lot more, but the geek in me is having difficulty getting past all the interlacing. I'm sure those were meant to be vinyl records getting thrown through the air and not a bunch of black discs with lines running through them. Fortunately, "Record Store," the opening cut on Gold-Bear's full-length debut, Are You Falling in Love? , is infectious enough on its own without all the visual accompaniment. And, yet, once you get past the technical issues, I have to admit the video, directed by Alexander Williams and [...]

So far it has been a good year for the 90s revival with the likes of Yuck and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart releasing wonderful fuzzy albums. And now they are joined by the Atlanta based indiepop quartet Gold-Bears . They recently signed to Slumberland Records and released their debut album Are You Falling in Love? last Tuesday, May 17th. You can enjoy the jangly sound of Gold-Bears by downloading the song ‘Record Store’ below. Record Store by Gold-Bears [mp3] [...]
After a blockbuster week of new releases last week (so many that we had a part one and two), this week's lot of new releases is also impressive, just not as jam-packed as last week. But, don't fret - there is plenty to listen to, including new music from: Danger Mouse Bahamas Chad VanGaalen Zachary [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars With summer break looming over us all, it’s the perfect time for a twee-punk band like Gold-Bears to make their debut. As this is their first ever album released, this band is brand new to the music scene and looking to win a spot in your heart as well as your stereo. Surely you have room left for some jangly guitar and hazy percussion in there? From the very first song, you can hear the clear alternative punk soundings of Gold-Bears [...]
I figure it's well past time we began doing these again. I can't promise I won't get bored of doing them once more, but we'll see how things go. This week's releases are not particularly interesting to your humble writer, but that's not to say there isn't something here for everyone. If we've left anything...

Are You Falling In Love? is the runaway-train debut from Atlanta-based indie-pop rockers, Gold-Bears . The band was formed in 2010 when frontman and songwriter, Jeremy Underwood, recruited a few friends in order to jam some songs he had stockpiled since splitting from his former band, Plastic Mastery. The band rushed out a 7-inch, 3 track for their first single, ‘Tally’ earlier this year. The single remains on the album, albeit re-recorded and augmented, and the rest of this LP manages to further build on an already impressive repertoire. [...]
