So more sold-outy stuff this week, with Johnny Flynn already inaccessible at Cabaret Voltaire on Friday. I am actually going to interview him for the site, but I think I might have forgotten to include a guestie on my request, so I may have to hide in the toilets after the interview to avoid being thrown out for lack of a ticket. This is the last week for the Communion Compilation Competition as well. By the end of the week I will pick the best pictures of hipsters being extremely hip and [...]

Sunday 14th Feb - The Cube Cinema, Bristol MV + EE were a lot more metallic than when I last caught them, under the eaves of the Wyrd Barn… plenty of swerving guitar chases and Hendrix underscores, colour you could swim in… That burning banjo / tarang showdown giving you a good shakin… A fragment of the film backdrop, looking doglike, jaw's transformed into falling feather limbs…The Doozer suppling some beautiful harmonica [...]

Last year we posted about Rob St. John and the excellent free EPs he was offering from his website ( just click here ). Now living in our neck of the woods and a favourite of top blog Song By Toad (high praise), Rob has been in touch to say he is putting on a show in Oxford next Monday (15th February). He says "Two pals of mine play as Golden Ghost (they also play as Viking Moses , with the Fence Collective and as part [...]

Photography via Laredo Community College You know I love riding my bicycle. Alot. I ride all the time, rainy, sunny, cold, hot, everything in between. It makes me happy, even when it is physically quite uncomfortable. But, I'm no one trick pony, it has always been my burning desire to dominate in three wildly popular sports. So, besides cycling, I've also participated in a season of curling a couple years back . Granted, we only won one game the [...]

You could drink yourself into a coma going to every interesting gig in Edinburgh this week. I think I might need a few orange juice gigs, if just to vaguely preserve both liver and waistline. Although it may be too late for both, I have to admit. I think I am going to start driving to gigs (tonight is by necessity, but we'll see how it goes) just as a way of forcing myself to stick to fizzy water or some such beverage. Maybe Skinny Water , perhaps (thank you Cogstar), a drink so monumentally stupid that [...]

Hello, welcome to the Ruthcast. Why the Ruthcast? Because my friend Ruth who runs the Bowery with Jane came round to the house last week to thoroughly upstage me on my own podcast. Last year Ruth was a guest on my Fresh Air radio show and completely and utterly upstaged me, and in this podcast we agreed that she would come on every week this year. And that, frankly, sounds like a bloody good idea to me. I mentioned on the Friday Five a couple of weeks ago that Ellie Greenwich [...]

So August is almost upon us. Traditionally - or at least for as long as I've been living here - most bands and promoters in Edinburgh tend to just take the month off and make way for the festival. It's a bit of a monolith. Every available venue (and most non-venue) space is booked up months in advance, and with so much happening every single day in August, it becomes rather difficult for smaller operations putting on shows. Of course there are exceptions – a lot of the bigger clubs just keep on trucking, and nights like Acoustic Edinburgh embrace [...]

Hello. I am Bart. Woo. So I'm doing the Monday gig listing. Mainly cos I'm usuallythe first person to jump in any time Matthew misses anything. You'll notice there's no music files. It's not that I don't really know what I'm doing. Well, not only that. For some reason the file hosting site that me, Dylan and Euan were given access to during Matthew's little holiday seems to have mysteriously dissappeared from the web. And it's only been three days. Crumbs. Hopefully songbytoad.com will still be here when he gets back - but who's to say [...]

Viking Moses and friends have put together a diverse month and a half long tour that is DIY all the way. Filling a slot in NY took longer then expected so at the very last moment Todd P offered Monster Island Basement a space on River Street in Williamsburg . The tour consists of PictishTrail (Scotland) co-owner of Fence Records and Rozi Plain (United Kingdom), Golden Ghost, and Viking Moses (US). Joining [...]

Anonymous Monk is a small but growing collective of musicians based out of Washington and led by musician Ben Kamen. Earlier this year they gave us For Cedar by Eleanor Murray and now they've gone and done something else amazing: the first, to my knowledge, compilation calendar, featuring one song per month. The compilation is titled Spring Calendar & Compilation 2009-2010 and includes a collective of month-related titles, like "March" and "April" and "Month #93. Included in a thin, beautifully artistic sleeve and wrapped [...]

This summer I had the pleasure of seeing Viking Moses with Golden Ghost at a garage show. His travels took him to the Midwest to record Daytrotter Sessions. Accompanied by Laura Goetz (Golden Ghost) are sweet four tracks offered free to download. You can hear the voice and lyrics that got to me that cool summer night. Daytrotter Session "His low voice can be [...]

MP3: Golden Ghost - Orca Eskimo (Lucky 9 Rmx) ( Thanks )

After months of keeping mum, last night Butter Team threw its support behind the mythical NY-based wizardry of Golden Ghost and almost appeared unexpectedly at a gathering in Baltimore's Floristree. Both Butter Team and Golden Ghost praised other artists for their work and vowed to continue working together in support of the party. "They are, in my judgment, made of steel, and are leaders in this country, not because of their labels or crafty MySpace bulletins, but because of what they have done," a source close to the BT camp said. [...]
