(yes, that is half the bar on stage...) Despite my impulse to avoid Snow-Maggedon II: Electric Boogaloo (as an aside - I'd love to meet the person who coined the phrase "Snow-Maggedon") to stay at home and re-watch old episodes of the Office with my sister, Allie (who is one of my favourite sisters), we (I) decided that going to see some Rock 'n' Roll would be better than spending 8 hours straight in front of the TV. I'm not even sure what to say about the Golden Hands Before God (Conducts [...]
It's December, so that pretty much means fighting through crowded shopping malls, going crazy with last minute work before the holidays and trying to convince your mom that they should by you another guitar pedal (ok, maybe that's just me). Whatever the case, we're all busy this time of year. Thankfully, the good folks at Pop Echo Records are making it a bit easier for me to get off my lazy butt and post by announcing a free compilation in honour of the holidays. Available here for a limited time , the [...]

For several personal reasons, 2008 is not a year that I will be looking back on with a great deal of fondness. There's been high points for sure, but the low points are ones that I hope I'll never need to experience again. On a much more superficial level however, there was a lot of good accomplished in double-oh-eight, and the world of interesting music cranked out a lot of good, while the world of popular music, once again, cranked out a lot of bad. As per usual in the world of bloggers, snobs and elitists, a few [...]

Truth be told, I've always liked the EP more than the LP. In most cases, 5 or 6 songs is the perfect amount of time for a band to set a mood without belaboring the point. This year, there were tons of terrific EPs, and I'm happy that the list features a complete mismash of styles. Folk, frantic pop, garage, spacey shoegaze, and even pseudo Brit rock. If you are a regular reader of herohill, it goes without saying these probably aren't the biggest names and common picks. These EPs are however, a good cross section of acts that are [...]

Upon first listening to Anthony Rochester 's Music For In The Spaceship album, it's very easy to understand how one might think that he comes from Sweden, where he would share the lyrical whimsy of Jens Lekman . Perhaps you could be forgiven for thinking that he hails from Norway, where he would be influenced by the vocal subtlety of Erlend Øye . And the true music aficionado would be justified in assuming that he must comes from Glasgow, since his gift of melody was obviously taught at the school of Belle and [...]

It seems like NXNE 2008 had only just finished, and now here we are, preparing for 2009. To celebrate the opening of the '09 festival's submission period, The Horseshoe hosted a free showcase on Tuesday night featuring three of my favourite indie(ish) bands on the current music scene as well as another band that I wasn't really familiar with, but quite enjoyed anyways. Of course, this week has been another massive slab of busy-ness and Tuesday seems like such a loooong time ago, but we'll see what I can remember. [...]

When Bowie sang that line on his 1972 album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars , he was echoing the fantasy of many a teenage boy or girl. The children wanted to grow up to be garbagemen or astronauts or superheros, but at a certain age that changed and most teens would have given anything to make that wild mutation as a rock 'n roll star. However, only a precious few ever get to live out that dream. While Bono , and Sting and Chris Martin [...]

So another HPX has come and gone, and once again our fair city held it down. The sets we caught were fantastic and as diverse as some of the venues that housed them. I mean, it's hard to believe you could see Propsector's Union, I See Rowboats and Retribution Gospel Choir in a church, and then jump ship to see the GZA rip at The Marquee on the same night, but such was the embarrassment of riches HPX had to offer. Anyway, here are ten things we learned this year at HPX: [...]

Well, although I've been listening to current releases by everyone from Deerhoof (very good) to Of Montreal (not so good) as well as several local acts (mostly good), I'm afraid I just haven't had it in me to whip up any new reviews right now. No particular reason other than a mild lack of inspiration I guess. So I figured in the meantime, I'd do my monthly " Sup In... " post a few days earlier because these are generally informative enough without requiring a great deal of creative writing. I've got a few cool shows [...]

A somber song for the fast approaching gray season, The Golden Hands Before God Conducts Incredible Magic Band & The Spirits' "Blood of November," recreates the dull, barren landscape and bitter breeze of late fall with an arrangement that is similarly sparse and chilling. A lone, lamenting acoustic guitar, and the solitary wail of the pedal steel, provide the primary accompaniment to Sean Barry's distant, echoing voice, perfectly capturing the irrational fear of all Northerners, that the sun may have passed for good this time. MP3: The Golden Hands Before God... - Blood of November [...]

Hey guys, sorry there wasn't a mixtape last week, but I ended up so damn sick that I missed two days of work and thought I was losing a lung. No, it wasn't pneumonia again (that would have been the third time) but it was still a pretty crappy case of sinusitis and bronchitis. That being said, I owe you a good one, something that I am sure that I would want to listen to, so here's what I've gotten the last two weeks. There are 11 awesome tracks rolled into one delicious mixtape package. [...]

Well, July didn't go quite as planned with regards to the concert goings. I attended a very small ratio of the shows that I had planned to, due to the fact that I was busy with other stuff and, for some reason, reedonkulously tired. I know everybody in the whole world thinks that they suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but sometimes I wonder if I actually do. Anyways, I did go see a couple of bands on Saturday night and I'll tell you about them as soon as I can, but in the meantime, let's look at the what ups [...]

myspace :: label Sometimes you stumble upon a band that you really want to get behind. The trouble is, in today's over saturated blogosphere, you usually end up trying to hype up a band that is already showing up on more blogs than adsense banners. Well, one that hasn't bubbled over but most assuredly will is the The Golden Hands Before God . When I reviewed the demos they sent me I said: You get caught up in the head nod state that bands like Mazzy Star and BJM do [...]

When we made the Ontario mix tape, most people were pretty much in agreeance with the bands we chose. But it was pretty obvious (thanks to Matthew , the notorious R.O.B. , and Paul ) that we missed the boat on The Sunparlour Players - which were only dropped at the last minute to get some hip hop on - and Windsor's The Golden Hands Before God . Luckily, we were able to rectify the latter with a few quick emails. God bless thee Internet. GHBG are almost finished with their new [...]
