Grandparents - Golden Isles While wondering around the camp full of bands in the sector titled "spaghetti western" I stumbled upon this Portland band. Working with borrowed equipment and thru the pre-dawn hours they crafted a 4 song EP that is bookend by my favorites. As Golden Isles rounds out the end of this session it opens your eyes into a vast array of psychedelic sourcery that mends the mind as if you'd just seen Cookie Monster each a carrot. Mosey on over and download this wondrous sonic journey .

"Golden Isles" new off Portland band Grandparents' FUMES is GREAT. Sure it's a little bit derivative (see if you can pick some of the influences out yourself.) but any of that derivative-ness (derivaty?) is of things we really like. It's jangly, but it's also sort of surreal sounding, it's poppy (there are some excellent melodies from chorus to verse) but it's also dark. Get familiar below. So basically i feel horrible. First, I'm hungover and need to heal before getting hammed again tonight. Second, I broke one of my good friend's computer last night... which i can hardly remember. Third, I HAVEN'T DONE A POOCH'S PROPS IN TOO LONG!!! Well here we go! For tonight, which i hope all you folks will enjoy without me, I'm going to give you a House Party Mixtape with some tunes from all genres (appropriate to drinking, of course) to cater to all of your picky friends. Last night, Brooklyn's The Antlers headlined at Il Motore in front of a packed house. This was our first time at this venue, and it was pretty incredible. Tiny, intimate, low stage, nice bar...perfect place for a concert. Combine all this with a chill crowd and it made for a truly great musical experience. Montreal's own Golden Isles opened up for The Antlers. We have to admit, we'd never heard of the group before this [...]

To recap: As for My Favorite 50 Songs of 2009, I made a few rules for myself. First, a band can only appear once. Also, this is purely about singles I enjoy. For instance, I would never put Harlem Shakes' Technicolor Health on my favorite albums list, but "Sunlight" made it pretty high on this list because it's a great pop song. I like a lot of Grooms' songs and think they're probably better than many of these, for instance, but none of them made it onto this list because they work much better as a group of experimental [...]

Credit on this one has to go to rcrdlbl and my co-worker Ike. I liked the the track, "You Look Good" as soon as I heard it on rcrdlbl, but it didn't start listening to it over and over until Ike also confirmed that it was an excellent song. I know absolutely nothing about Golden Isles other than that they have a few very good tracks up on their myspace page and apparently play a lot of shows, but only in Canada. They're a refreshing break from all the lo-fi nonsense of late, without sacrificng any nostalgic poppy [...]

Flew out of Maine and headed to sunny St. Simon's Island, Georgia for a show on the 19th at Family Life Assembly . Great church, great group of folks and had a wonderful time with them. It would be awesome to get back down there. If you live near Family Life Assembly, you should check out this church. They are on fire for Jesus! t00-m0ch, Chris [...]
