Since the mid-902s The Sea and Cake have delivered an airier, more upbeat and often palatable version of post-rock as opposed to Chicago's other post-rock icons, Tortoise. While both groups indeed grab from a diverse set of influences including a large dose of jazzy feels, The Sea and Cake often go with a more pop-leaning organic and melodic approach - often aided by synthesizers and electronics on their earlier work. And wouldn't you know it, Tortoise's John McEntire handles things behind the kit in The Sea And Cake and is joined by members of [...]

The Portland group Golden Retriever is made up of bass clarinetist Jonathan Sielaff, synth player Matt Carlson, and these lovable scamps , and they're releasing their new record on the venerable Thrill Jockey label on July 24 . It's called Occupied with the Unspoken (that's the cover up there), and it contains four compositions of their striking, unique sound. The press release tells us more: Golden Retriever create polyphonic music from monophonic instruments. The bass clarinet and the analog modular synthesizer are generally both capable of playing only [...]

Golden Retriever 's Light Cones is terrifically alien. Released on outsider ambient canon Root Strata , it stands out as their most expansive and lucid album to date. More than just another "spaced out" improvisational noise collaboration, the duo of Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sielaff take their post-minimalist craft ALL the way past the furthest reaches, to where the universe is being ripped apart and born again. Light Cones is an overwhelming sedative malfunction, with Carlson's modular synth blinking at infinite depth of field and Sielaff's distending bass clarinet constantly manipulating [...]

Best Friends // Surf Bitches How did I not find this earlier? Big thanks to my pal Rachel Levy for unknowingly turning me on to this because it just made my day. Ok so there is this band from Sheffield, England and they are called Best Friends . Oh and their debut EP is called Surf Bitches and the cover features a tie-dye-wearin' golden retriever. If someone told me that the band was in this for anything other than [...]
I feel like we should all be jamming out to "Right Now" (and drinking Crystal Pepsi?), because this is the day we've all been waiting for. It's time to stop living in the past and start living in the moment: my annual list of the one-hundred best albums of 2010 is finally ready for you to feast your eyes on it. Look at it. Look at it how you would a naked slut as she spreads her legs for you. It's here for the taking. As is customary now, I've decided not to write blurbs for all 100 [...]

Five or six years ago, if you were to tell me Futurama was returning to television, I would have shit myself with glee. Wait. Is that even possible? Can one be so overjoyed that bowel control is lost? Whatever the answer may be, the point remains: there was a time in recent years when I was obsessed with Futurama . Lest you think I'm speaking hyperbolically, there are precious few things in this world I have ever appreciated on such an intense level that I would say I was "obsessed" with it. Some examples include: Gail Simmons' [...]

Portland's Matt Carlson (Bonus, and sometimes Parenthetical Girls) and Jonathan Sielaff (Au) recently released a CD-R under the moniker Golden Retriever via Roots Strata . It's sold out. Once you get past impeccable cover art, you've got five astral tracks made with synthesizers and bass clarinet. While Golden Retriever employs much more ambient/drone than say Sliver or Grasshopper, the project is in the same family of organic wind...
Click here to view the embedded video. Awww...now that I'm taking care of the world's greatest golden retriever, a spry 14-year-old, I just need to get some tiger cubs. I've always secretly (or not so secretly) wanted to own some sort of jungle cat - tiger, lion, puma, cougar, lynx, etc. [ via ]
