Fresh off their trip to Newtown, these supercute golden retrievers - trained as "comfort dogs"- have headed to Boston to help the victims and witnesses of Monday's bombing in Boston. The dogs are specially trained to deal with stressful situations by the K-9 Comfort Ministries at Lutheran Church Charities near Chicago. Which means I will so be visiting them and bringing them all of the snausages. The program was started in 2008 in response to a shooting at Northern Illinois University and now consists of at least 67 trained comfort dogs across the nation. [...]

Rachel Evans (Motion Sickness of Time Travel) Does the word "ambient" mean anything to you in 2012? It seems as though its usage becomes more and more scarce as the years go by. One might even call it out of fashion. Artists and journalists seem to be slightly squicked out by it. "Drone," a vaguer and less informative term, is more favored by the newer generation of artists and listeners. But despite these apparent trends against the A-word, the music itself is probably as big and [...]
British boy band The Wanted may have taken the hot-and-edgy approach, while their UK brethren One Direction tend to aim for the cute-and-snuggly look, but hark! A minor concession: The sexy dudes have just premiered a video showcasing their vocal talents a cappella taking on the Yuletide classic "White Christmas" — with a dog. A dog! An adorable, cuddly golden retriever. And that, quite literally, is everything that you need to know. Watch the video up top. [via Celebuzz ]
Would you like to listen to something from a band who seem to take their cues from Poppy Nogood -era Terry Riley? Then you're in luck. Golden Retriever have that whole organ/woodwind/delay chamber set-up, and use to make some sublimely cosmic new music. Matt Carlson plays analogue synth and Jonathan Sielaff provides electric bass clarinet for Canonic Horizon a pulsing lightshow of a track. You can hear this one as drone music, or listen closer to the swirling patterns beneath. From a self-titled CR-r released in 2010. [...]

The modular synthesiser is not the obvious choice for a duo partner if you are a bass clarinet player, but then ‘Occupied with the Unspoken’ does not appear to be overly concerned with the obvious. Opener, ‘Serene Velocity’ oscillates a trance-inducing repetitive siren wail before shrieking soloing excess propels the track into orbit. At this point the group do something surprising and beautiful in its simplicity. A series of granite bass tones reels the everything in at its excessive peak. The boxed fury achieves a static plateau through a framing effect where [...]
Ah, ambient drone duos-they grow up so fast! It seems like just yesterday Golden Retriever was releasing limited-run missives on CD-R and cassette for the likes of Root Strata and NNA Tapes. But no, Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sielaff have been at it since 2010, entreating us to fly with them to a foggy future-past via the unexpected combination of synthesizer and bass clarinet. Not that this is a revolutionary sound or anything-Dylan Ettinger's 2009 LP New Age Outlaws employed similar means to a similar end-but there's something at once melodic and methodical about Golden [...]

Golden Retriever - Canopy from Thrill Jockey Records on Vimeo . GOLDEN RETRIEVER, REGULAR MUSIC, ILYAS AHMED, PULSE EMITTER ( Holocene , 1001 SE Morrison) You might not imagine that a 10-minute-long song composed of modular synth noises and the melodious bleats of a bass clarinet could be an engaging, emotionally walloping experience—but you'd be wrong. In the hands of talented and prolific local musicians Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sielaff of Golden Retriever, these two instruments become tools for testing the capacities of sound, digging diligently [...]
What's that noise? Thrill Jockey, 2012 7.1 / 10.0 There’s always a small, devoted fanbase for lovers of abstract and “difficult” music, and that cult has grown in the last few years. Drone, noise, ambient, and other similar, poorly named genres have seen their scope and influence rise tremendously throughout [...]

Golden Retriever, an instrumental pairing of Portland musicians Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sielaff, have released a number of limited tapes, CD-Rs and LPs, but Occupied with the Unspoken is their first widely available album. Each of its four tracks comprises a dense soundscape of analogue synthesiser tones threaded with trails of bass clarinet, evolving horizontally across alien landscapes before fading out just before the ten minute mark. Opening piece Serene Velocity lifts its name from an experimental film by Ernie Gehr, in which a silent, reflective neon-lit corridor flickers rapidly towards and away from [...]
"Polyphonic music with monophonic instruments" sounds interesting only on a conceptual level. What plays out on Occupied with the Unspoken doesn't really satisfy on any level, really. One of the most perplexing instrumental pieces I've ever heard comes at the end of the Frank Zappa's three-disc guitar compilation, pointedly named Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar. The song, "Canard du Jour", is a duet between Zappa on bouzouki and jazz fusion maestro Jean-Luc Ponty on violin. Knowing that all of the songs were meant to show some mastery of the guitar in a unique way, I paid [...]

Since the mid-902s The Sea and Cake have delivered an airier, more upbeat and often palatable version of post-rock as opposed to Chicago's other post-rock icons, Tortoise. While both groups indeed grab from a diverse set of influences including a large dose of jazzy feels, The Sea and Cake often go with a more pop-leaning organic and melodic approach - often aided by synthesizers and electronics on their earlier work. And wouldn't you know it, Tortoise's John McEntire handles things behind the kit in The Sea And Cake and is joined by members of [...]

The Portland group Golden Retriever is made up of bass clarinetist Jonathan Sielaff, synth player Matt Carlson, and these lovable scamps , and they're releasing their new record on the venerable Thrill Jockey label on July 24 . It's called Occupied with the Unspoken (that's the cover up there), and it contains four compositions of their striking, unique sound. The press release tells us more: Golden Retriever create polyphonic music from monophonic instruments. The bass clarinet and the analog modular synthesizer are generally both capable of playing only [...]
