Hey there tiger, happy Monday. Yeah, I'm talkin' to you. So you think you know your rock history? Or do you just want to see how little you actually know? Newsweek has a wicked-ass hard Rock 'n' Roll Quiz . It's probably the worst that this nerd has ever done on a test (52% score), but it is extremely entertaining if you like the minutae of musical history. Fun sound clips throughout, too, so turn down those speakers at work before you start the quiz -- I mean, before you start working [...]

Just 9 days left to go until the bar exam - today's topic to cram.... Constitutional Law. Speaking of the fundamental right to free speech and due process, the kind people at Wiredset just sent us a promo link to a track off the upcoming Golden Smog album, Another Fine Day . For those of you unwashed in the cleansing electro-folk-pop waters of Golden Smog, the band is comprised of members of The Jayhawks, Wilco, Soul Asylum and Big Star. Due to come out this Tuesday, [...]

Short one today. Golden Smog , the alt-country supergroup, composed of (in this incarnation) Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks), Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run), Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), are releasing their new new album Another Fine Day on Tuesday. The first single is out now: 5-22-02 It's a great little slice of what makes Americana great, sounding like anything from a lost Flying Burrito Brothers track to a new Jayhawks song. I don't know what happened on 5-22-02 for [...]

Eight years after their last release, Golden Smog is coming back on Tuesday with Another Fine Day . The band is a side gig made up of members from the Jayhawks (Gary Louris, Marc Perlman), Run Westy Run (Kraig Johnson), Soul Asylum (Dan Murphy) and Wilco (Jeff Tweedy). Anything loosely affiliated to the Jayhawks or Wilco always will grab my attention. I own Golden Smog's 1995 release Down by the Old Mainstream , a loose, sometimes-twangy gem of an album. Judging by 5-22-02 , which has lots of fun guitar work and some [...]
1. Grizzly Bear - 'On A Neck On A Spit' 2. Jeff Mueller - 'Formed In Atoms' 3. Oxes - 'Panda Strong' 4. Wives - 'Babies' 5. Sufjan Stevens - 'Holland' half a dozen. Golden Smog - '5-22-02' 7. They Shoot Horses Don't They - [...]

So Paste has finally posted online the whole of their "100 Best Living Songwriters" feature, complete with supporting essays for each listee. Topping the list, to on one's surprise, is Bob Dylan - only the most devoted contrarian would try to take issue with his selection. Neil Young's #2 placing might ruffle a few more feathers, but only amongst crazy people so we'll disregard their complaints. Things potentially get a little more contentious in the middle of the pack ( Sufjan Stevens over [...]
Things have been hectic in the Perfect Porridge Kitchen, and we're falling behind. Therefore, here's a PR-induced news mashup for your reading pleasure... -Saint Paul's Marshall Cretin play Big V's tonight (July 13th) and aren't feeling the local love. Go out and support them if you can! -Minneapolis' Over/Under is also playing tonight. They'll be at the The French Press in downtown St. Paul starting at 11:30. -Minneapolis' (supergroup?) Big Trouble has booked themselves at The Kitty [...]

There are, obviously, benefits from being in touch with labels and PR peoples. Many benefits in fact, it's just that I tend to like to champion the best of the less well-known bands that I come in contact with here on EAR FARM. Doesn't mean I don't know a good thing when I see it (or when one is sent my way rather) and this, this is a good thing. Golden Smog is releasing their latest record Another Fine Day on July 18th. Do [...]

July 18th is approaching, and that means that Golden Smog is about to release their latest album Another Fine Day . Golden Smog is a collaboration between Gary Louris, Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks), Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run), Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum), and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco). Their fourth album was recorded last year, and has fifteen songs that showcase the various styles of all the musicians from pop to acoustic. Their first single, '5-22-02' is a sweet little pop melody. Download [...]

One of the first supergroups I cared for, (other than the Travelling Wilburys) was Golden Smog. Members Gary Louris, Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks), Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run), Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) are all great musicians who I enjoy outside of this collaboration and in their other side projects as well. Golden Smog are back with their first release since 1998s Weird Tales. Here is a song from the upcoming album, "Another Fine Day", titled 5-22-02. The song is a pop gem for the guys in [...]

Run Chico Run / Slow Action ( Boompa ) British Columbians Run Chico Run became a duo by circumstance when the third leg of their trio bailed right before a tour and the unconventional arrangement has served them well. The sound on their latest album Slow Action is quite a contrast to what I witnessed when I saw them at SxSW in 2004 - while that was a storm of drums, huge fuzzy walls of keyboards and questionable facial hair, their [...]
Lots of great stuff floating around on the blogs this week, here are a few things that caught my attention..... - Some Velvet Blog has an M Ward track up from his upcoming release, "Post- War" - More Cowbell has some new album info regarding Golden Smog , the side project of Jeff Tweedy and Gary Louris (and others) - Catbirdseat gives news of a Destroyer CBC session - Sound Team dropped Movie Monster on the masses today, Indie [...]
