My favorite band of 2008 has released another video for a song off of their immaculate debut release, Only Way to Be Alone . Good Old War have proven themselves to be masters of the acoustic guitar, churning out catchy, feel-good tracks that can fall anywhere between indie pop and bluesy folk rock. Their latest single, "Maybe Mine," is a deceptively cute little ditty about being sick of being strung along. The video's as short and sweet as the song, and for some reason the boy that looks like he was crafted using early 90's claymation technology feels very [...]

The daytime showcase consisted of performances by Orenda Fink , Good Old War , Look Mexico , The Uglysuit , and Shayna Zaid [...]

Wait..what? Yeah I'm flying into San Francisco from Portland today so I'll just fill you in on what's going on today. Which is close to nothing unless you're going to the Weezer/Blink 182 show. If you're not going, check out young and talented folk act Good Old War and this dude called Cory Branan over at the Bottom of the Hill tonight. Don't bother with The Honorary Title though, those guys annoy the hell out of me. More Bay Area show updates tomorrow for this coming week. See [...]

Okay, I've now had my fill of cake. I'm not much for chocolate, cake or ice cream, but I've had all three in one week, and my sweet tooth has officially been sated! While my taste for sweets is limited, my taste for music... not so much. This week, I present yet another scrambled-egg affair of aural architecture. Special thanks goes out to Ryan, who turned me on to Solillaquists of Sound . It's a helluva piece of work, and definitely worth checking out. I hear they're playing Atlanta next week, and will likely be in attendance- I'll [...]

This toe-tapping song sparkles effervescently, with just the smallest hint of a western Texas twang. It's peppered liberally with fantastic handclappy percussion (it kicks into full glory about 1:15 in) that reminds me of my favorite Simon & Garfunkel moments - or actually, Art and Paul with a fresh twist, like the Local Natives playing the backyard . It's also thoroughly drenched in golden '60s summer surfing harmonies. After listening to it a handful of times, I was already singing along. " I counted twenty-seven birds up there today; I'm [...]

This past weekend I visited a friend in Pennsylvania for a local festival there. (If anyone wants me to visit them, it's best to lure me there with the premise that I will be able to drink in the streets without fear of legal reprisal.) Another friend asked me to bring her a CD of specific songs, most of which I owned, but some I hadn't heard before. After getting all the songs, I added some tracks I like and delivered the mix to the recipient, which ended up spanning 2 CDs. I hope she's enjoying it. If [...]

I'm going to go ahead and be perfectly honest. I have no idea what to write about this week. It's an awkward time for me musically, as nothing of any substance has come out, and I'm just in a holding pattern, waiting for new music. The new Thrice album, Beggars has had it's iTunes release date moved up to August 11, which has me salivating out of multiple orifices. But, alas that is still two weeks away so, instead of a review, I'm going to let you know about a couple of bands that have [...]
