By now it's common knowledge that the Roots are the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. And if you watch the show, or watch what we put up from the show, you see that they also frequently act as the backing band for other performers that come on the show, especially hip hop artists. It's cool to watch and they always seem to add a fire to the performance. So cool in fact, that someone went to the trouble of gathering up a few choice cuts, throwing them on a mixtape and putting it up for [...]

Goodie Mob reunites and performs "Soul Food" on the Nov. 12 edition of Late Night.
Which came first, the BET Hip-Hop Awards or Atlanta's steady flow of garbage-ass rap music? The chicken-or-the-egg question occurred to me as I watched last night's broadcast of the awards show, which should've been renamed the Gucci Mane Awards for the number of performances (3?) featuring the East Atlanta-bred MC. It typified a night in which the [...]
No idea how we're supposed to take the above, although you can be sure it pertains to Nah Right's CMJ Showcase tomorrow night, featuring more rap in one shot (OJ!) than the festival has otherwis... Continue reading "Of Goodie Goodie Surprises and Goodie Mob" >
It seems hard to believe that the gospel-infused, jam-blues-rock band The Word released their eponymous debut album some nine years ago - which has held up quite well over time. The band, which consists of the NMAS, pedal-steel whiz Robert Randolph and keyboard extraordinaire John Medeski have only made a handful of sporadic appearances over the years since they originally toured behind the album. The super-group will come together once again for a two-date New Year's run playing shows in Philly and New York, as a warm-up before for their Jam Cruise 8 [...]
Last month, the acclaimed hip-hop collective known as Goodie Mob reunited for the first time in over a year at a hometown gig in Atlanta. This month, Big Gipp, Khujo, T-Mo, and Gnarl Barkley's Cee-Lo will do it all over again, multiple times, at venues all across the U.S. Beginning October 15th in New Orleans, the foursome will embark on a month leg trek featuring dates on both coasts as well as an appearance at this year's Smoke Out Festival . Also worth noting is the November 13th show at the Hammerstein Ballroom [...]

As you saw , Bobby Ray brought his show to Chicago last week. This, of course means that my homie and fellow Outkast aficionado, Playboy Tre was in attendance. I was able to pull him to the side and talk about his new projects, the resurgence of "real" Hip-Hop and his own definition of the word "ham." He also opened up about how important the Goodie Mob reunion was to himself and Atlanta as a whole and the reason one absence from the show left a sour taste in his mouth. [...]

Could the future of Southern hip-hop be riding on the reunion of a group that hasn't recorded together in 10 years?
As we reported yesterday , a Sublime reunion, or at least the closest possibility to a Sublime reunion, will be taking place at Cypress Hill's Smoke Out Festival 2009 . But that won't be the only act of note offered at this year's festival, which is scheduled from October 23-24 at the San Manuel Amphitheatre in San Bernardino, Califronia. Slipknot, Deftones, Pennywise (minus its frontman), Method Man & Redman, and Kottonmouth Kings head the festivities, while Bad Brains, Immortal Technique, K'Naan, and Mix Master Mike are all also scheduled to make an appearance. Also confirmed will be [...]
