Googoosh on the cover of Cävanan-e Emruz Magazine January of 1975 "After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, she is famously known for remaining in Iran until 2000 and not performing again due to the ban on female singers. Still, her following grew. Younger people have rediscovered her music via bootleg recordings. [ 3 ] Outside of Iran, she has a significant following in many Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries, and has even caught the [...]

Googoosh yearns as Juliets yearn from behind the protection of balconies. When the Ayatollah Khomeini took over Iran from the Shah in 1979, the sight of a woman singing in public changed from wonderful to vile, and her nature changed from legal to illegal. So it was that the recording career of Faegeh Atashin, stage name Googoosh, stopped at its 17th studio album and went on a two-decade hiatus. The ban seems even more ludicrous when you listen to this eleven-track aperitif and notice that her...

After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, pop music's future seemed dark because of new Islamic laws and restrictions, and many musicians migrated to foreign countries. Raks Raks Raks: 27 Golden Garage Psych Nuggets from the Iranian 60s Scene ("Dance! Dance! Dance!") hearkens back to a pre-Revolutionary time, before making music was all but forbidden. It was around the 50s and early 60s when the "Sultan of Pop" Viguen Derderian - considered by some to be the Persian Elvis - became one of the first musicians in Iran to perform with a guitar, [...]

Finders Keepers have no doubt been instrumental in the 60s & 70s psychedelic funk revival from the 3rd world. A period of intense cross pollination, 60s & 70s were a gold mine for mindboggling quality, until things fell prey to consumerism & depoliticisation starting from the 80s. We're still discovering gems from the Turkish 70s thanks to the dedication of Grup Ses , Kabus Kerim , Onur Engin and our own Barış K. who have been spearheading the revival with mixes and edits. Iran from the same period, has many [...]

" Raks Raks Raks ," which means "dance dance dance," is an outstanding new collection of "Garage Psych Nuggets from the Iranian '60s Scene" (who knew?) that's got 17 songs on colored vinyl, including this completely mental version of Otis Redding's "Respect" by the Persian legend Googoosh. Step off, Aretha! Googosh: " Respect " - her command of the English language isn't perfect, but it's a helluva lot better then my Farsi (is she saying "take PCP"?) As with so many international rock scenes , surf music seems to be a big influence. The [...]

Finders Keepers come up smelling of roses once again, their latest compilation focuses on Persian funk, folk & psychedelia from the 60's & 70's: "The music and voices that blossomed during those decades exemplify the turbulence and excitement of the age. It is worth recognizing these 'left out' and 'lost' artists individually and as a group in the global happenings of 60s/70s psych, rock and folk, while exploring their influence and relevance to the present day. Is it possible that there is a genus of delectable sounds and fetching images that almost [...]

This marks a new segment in Hifever's (soon approaching) one year anniversary where I take you, the reader, on a field trip through space, time, and possibly hype machine to other musical worlds. This post features the 1970's Iranian actress/singer Googoosh. I picked up an old copy of the magazine The Believer a few weeks ago that included a really great CD featuring western musicians and the non-western artists who have influenced their music. One of the songs that is featured on the CD that I've become really obsessed with is "Makhloogh" by Googoosh. [...]
