Filed under: News Canadian Press Canadian folk icon Gordon Lightfoot made a surprise appearance Tuesday afternoon at Toronto's St. James Park following news that the City of Toronto was planning to evict Occupy Toronto protestors from the location later this evening. "I'm here at the invitation of my daughter to come and see the site," Lightfoot, the man behind such hits as 'If You Could Read My Mind,' told CTV News, with [...]
A dozen autumns ago I moved to Minneapolis from South Dakota, and it was then that I learned how all'a ya can't shut up about one thing: The Halloween Blizzard of '91.

Any day is perfect for a Lightfoot song!
Montreal folk/country duo Domestic Crisis Group had one of my favorite EPs of 2010. Now they are back with a new single, a cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Song For A Winter's Night". The track appeared on Herohill's tribute album to Lightfoot. You can hear the song here. I managed to catch Domestic Crisis Group when they came to Toronto for CMW. You can read my impressions here.

Received an email a few weeks ago from Octoberman (aka Marc Morissette) himself. Apparently he has finished with the new album which will drop sometime this Fall. The brand new album featuring the talents of: Jim Guthrie (Co-producer) FemBots Two-Minute Miracles The Wilderness of Manitoba (That I am excited to hear what tracks they are on and playing Ottawa on August 3rd ) Howie Beck While there is no leading single at the moment. Considering how many people contributed to the Gordon Lightfoot project, it's not surprising that a few missed the deadline. It's to be expected, especially when you are asking people to record covers on their own time and their own dime. Considering that he's become a road warrior - and actually had to try to mix and master this song between trips out to Calgary for Sled Island - it's amazing that Halifax's Jon Mckiel not only found time to head to a studio (Diego Medina's Old Confidence Lodge), he managed to [...]

by teepoo Adele- I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt Cover) Cursed Arrows- Let it Ride (Gordon Lightfoot Cover) Surfer Blood- Hey Sandy (Polaris Cover)

We've been happily following the evolution of Canada's Cursed Arrows and the obligingly flesh-searing jams from their latest, The Madness Of Crowds . And just when we thought we'd got the Arrows pinned down, they toss us a stylistic googlie, in the form of, not just a cover tune, but a cover tune by Gordon Lightfoot. Recorded for a Canada Day tribute to everyone's favorite Canadian troubadour, Let It Ride is a radical departure from Cursed Arrows previous output, but I'll be damned if it doesn't [...]

Jagjaguwar You'll excuse the brevity of today's post as I try to pretend I'm still on some kind of holiday schedule. Hope everyone in Canada had a lovely long weekend and everyone in America is still enjoying theirs; today is a sort of belated Canada Day-ish post. Note the "ish". Many were disappointed when Wolf Parade made good on their promise to call it a day - at least for the foreseeable future after a couple of final shows at the end of may, but if anything that means fans will have [...]

It's Canada Day today. The older I get, the more often I consider Canada and think, yeah, now that seems like a country that has its act together. There's football and rock bands and rivers and streams of pure maple syrup. Paloma and I were watching episodes of The Kids In The Hall last week when she suggested we move to the land that gave us Bruce McCulloch. "I don't think that they want us." Not that we're trouble. We're quiet, well-behaved and have both seen [...]
Herohill, a Canadiana blog based out of Halifax, has warmed my Kanuk heart on this fine CANADA DAY with an ambitious project they released today in honor of one of our greatest Canadian folk heros, Gordon Lightfoot, the man behind anthems like "The Great Canadian Railroad Trilogy" and "If You Could Read My Mind". Gordie's the bomb and so are his timeless songs, so it's rad that Herohill commissioned severa l Canadian artists (+ one American) to record original covers of his songs they then collected into a compilation album titled Turning Back The Pages Of My Sweet Shattered Dreams, a [...]

Our friends over at Hero Hill have outdone themselves on this fine Canada Day . They put together a tribute to Gordon Lightfoot from some of my favorite Canadian indie artists including the Warped 45s , Cam Penner , and The Schomberg Fair . Turning Back the Pages of My Sweet Shattered Dreams contains 36 tracks covering nearly all of Lightfoot's career. Go over to Hero Hill and download this tribute pronto! Cam Penner [...]

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]
