It's the start of a pretty extensive U.S. tour, and all dates are at the [...]

The Florida band Gospel Music recently made their live-radio debut on XPN2 , and now you can stream their session whenever you like! Gospel Music is the project of singer/songwriter/guitarist Owen Holmes, who released his full-length debut, How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL , on Kill Rock Stars last year. In the session, we'll hear the full-band version of Gospel Music perform selections from the album and Owen's debut EP, Duettes , live in the studio. XPN22s Eric Schuman will also talk with Owen about his connection to public radio and his involvement [...]

Although I believe that a person's spiritual beliefs are a private thing, I will confess that I'm not a regular church-goer - in fact, the last time I attempted to sing a hymn my voice probably hadn't yet changed. But I've found that there are certain kinds of gospel music that really appeal to me, mostly because it just sounds good. Gospel music is defined by wikipedia as 'music that is written to express either personal, spiritual or a communal belief regarding Christian life. . .' which covers a lot of territory. By that definition you [...]

One of our favorite new bands Streetwalkers will be opening for Kill Rock Stars' Gospel Music (featuring members of Black Kids) tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. The original core members of Streetwalkers knew each other from performing around town in other local acts and by way of Craigslist bonding over their love for bands like My Bloody Valentine and Siouxsie and the Banshees. They've recently added BITBY 's Kyle Costill into the mix on keys so this will be your first chance to see them as a five-piece live, but you'll also be able to catch Streetwalkers [...]

DOWNLOAD: Gospel Music - This Town Don't Have Enough Bars for Both of Us (MP3) I'm just going to quote the post we did during CMJ here: Then it's Gospel Music which is Owen Holmes who used to be in CMJ 2007 buzz band Black Kids but now makes indiepop somewhere between Stephin Merrit and Jonathan Richman (which is a definite sweet spot for me.) Holmes got help from Hefner's Darren Hayman, Camera Obscura's Traceyanne Campbell and others on [...]

While his band, brief late '002s indie-pop sensation Black Kids, continue work on their forthcoming sophomore effort (one we'll be looking forward too, especially if it contains anything as bopping-alone-at-home friendly as "big hit" "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You" or the woefully under-appreciated follow-up "Look At Me (When I Rock Wichoo)" ), bassist Owen Holmes has kept himself even more busy by splintering back off into solo side-project Gospel Music , an act that can currently be found on tour in support of its October-released debut LP [...]
Gospel Music's sound has absolutely nothing to do with gospel music. Black Kids bassist Owen Holmes is the man behind Gospel Music and the band has released a debut LP on Kill Rock Stars, How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL, with tunes that bring to mind Magnetic Fields and Moldy Peaches. Jaunty acoustic pop twee songs about love, heartbreak and social awkwardness with a bit of a tongue and cheek humor. Gospel Music @ Kill Rock Stars [...]

A cutesy sing-song single, "This Town Doesn't Have Enough Bars For Both Of Us" is the creation of Black Kids bassist Owen Holmes. Under the moniker Gospel Music, Holmes has released debut LP How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL (Kill Rock Stars). Bringing to mind both the Moldy Peaches and the Magnetic Fields, [...]
An album-length ode to hangdogs, the women who settle for them, and the extremely long titles that ensue. I think this guy Owen Holmes isn't as clever as he'd like to be. He's the man behind the moniker Gospel Music, an act whose output doesn't have anything to do with gospel music, but does have plenty to do with jaunty acoustic pop and twee love songs. Holmes has this annoying habit of pausing before his "laugh lines" (I use the term loosely), as though he's smirking at you, eyebrows wriggling, promising that THIS...
Don't let the band name fool you. You've never heard gospel music this brief. Or this secular. Okay, to be completely accurate, Gospel Music 's How to Get to Heaven from Jacksonville, FL isn't gospel at all. It touches on love, heartbreak, and social awkwardness. So, it's post-punk, actually. And it's not half bad. And it's super-duper cute. If this twee trope is starting to seem familiar, that's because Gospel Music is Black Kids bassist Owen Holmes' new project. Remember "I Don't Wanna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You"? [...]
Surfer Blood return with their first release since 20102s sensational debut LP, Astro Coast, an album that made them a huge hit in the indie circuits for the past two years. One of our favorite songs so far this autumn is "Don't Move" from Phantogram; it's simply a fantastic track that you just can't but [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

A side project for Black Kids' bassist Owen Holmes, Gospel Music is ready to release its debut LP, How To Get To Heaven From Jackskonville, FL. The lead single from the album, "This Town Doesn't Have Enough Bars For Both Of Us," premiered on Pitchfork last recently. "This Town..." is a catchy tune featuring Holmes' baritone sing-talking in front of Madeline Long's background vocals. The new album will be released on October 25th. Listen to, and watch the video for, "This Town Doesn't Have Enough Bars For Both Of Us." [...]

Gospel Music , the side project of Black Kids bassist Owen Holmes, will release the debut-album " How to Get to Heaven From Jacksonville, FL" on Kill Rock Stars 25. October. I've already had a listen to the album, and it's definitely a strong debut, full of great songs and good lyrics. I really like the rough beauty in Holmes' songs. Gospel Music released one of my favourite EPs last year, "Duettes" , where he sang together with Shirley Simms from The Magnetic Fields, Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura, SoKo, Darren Hayman and Cassie Ramone from Vivian Girls. Joakim - Nothing Gold By Stef Siepel The weekly froth! A weekly take on six tracks, most of which have recently popped up somewhere in the blogosphere. Bit of a mixed bag with a slight leaning towards house, disco, and remixes, but generally just anything that for some reason tickled the writer's fancy. Track of the week: 'Nothing Gold' by Joakim Fucking tune, seriously. It is not often that I start with a swear word, but hot damn, [...]
