Ok, so I’ve finally started to get used to the new acronym EDM and it’s certainly better than “Electronica” the first incarnation of a layman’s term back in the ‘90s. The fucking hilarious thing is when people think of EDM as something different than house or techno? EDM is an acronym to refer to all of the genres of electronic dance music; it is not its own fucking genre of music! Now that’s settled let’s just agree it is a mainstream abbreviation that we are all going to have to live with, it’s just embedded too [...]

After reviewing Plum and Pumajaw recently Ralph's continuing in his mission to bring you the best in Scottish electronica. With that in mind he could go no further than introduce the sublime Fiona Soe Paing , based in Aberdeenshire and who has been evolving her unique brand of experimental, vocal-led electronica since 2007. [...]
I think I could bitched out and cursed at in French and still walk away smiling. French dudes are lucky. Bastards. Yacht did a great job on this cover of French avant-garde singer Brigitte Fontaine tune, “Le Goudron.” The single came out on DFA a while ago (you can pick up here ), but still worthy of a share. Enjoy… And while I’m at it, here are some other Brigitte Fontaine tunes for your enjoyment. Stereolab "Calimero" Gotan Project "Santa Maria" [...]
Tweet I have my smug face on. A month ago I wrote up a piece on Nedry , prophesying that their upcoming material might be quite good. And I was right. I'm slightly less smug about that the fact that I warned everyone to keep their eyes peeled - and the very next day their new single, "Violaceae" , started previewing online, and I didn't notice for a month. As I say, people, not as I do. [...]
This new track from California-based DJ Freddie Joachim comes to us just in time for Valentine's Day. It's hard to listen to "Morena" without thinking of how perfect it would be to have it on hand while the sandalwood incense is being lit. Or whatever you have planned for the night. Supple vocals are engrained into [...]
This new track from California-based DJ Freddie Joachim comes to us just in time for Valentine's Day. It's hard to listen to "Morena" without thinking of how perfect it would be to have it on hand while the sandalwood incense is being lit. Or whatever you have planned for the night. Supple vocals are engrained into a polished Spanish guitar rhythm, all of which play gently against a smooth snare beat. There are hints of Gotan Project with maybe even Thievery Corporation intermixed. [...]
Once upon a time I gave Philippe Cohen Solal (of Gotan Project ) a few CDs of experiments with the Colombian rhythm of Cumbia, which I had sourced from travels in Mexico, myspace, blogs, or directly from producers and DJs in Tijuana, Mexico City, Monterrey, Bogota and Buenos Aires. I figured someone who had very successfully innovated with Tango, would be interested in another similar movement going on with Cumbia. In fact I was so excited about this new twist on cumbia, that in 2008 I started a project called [...]

A small introduction: Sziget is an annual 7 days music festival that is one of the biggest in Europe with about 400.000 visitors. It takes place on a island in the beautiful city of Budapest in the second week of August. Sziget draws all sorts of people together through their desire to create, or enjoy [...]

She had liked the young man's looks, and his short-sighted eyes, and his odd way of speaking, that was abrupt yet soft, just as his hands were sun-burnt and sinewy, yet with smooth nails like a woman's. His hair was sunburnt-looking too, or rather the colour of bracken after frost; his eyes grey, with the appealing look of the shortsighted, his smile shy yet confident, as if he knew lots of things she had never dreamed of, and yet wouldn't for the world have had her feel his superiority. But she did feel it, and liked the feeling; for it [...]

The sun always seems to shine at Europavox, and it's appreciated more than ever this year after the wind and rain we've left behind in Dublin. Apart from the weather, though, the festival has changed somewhat from 2010. Thumbing through the festival programme for the umpteenth time on the long train journey from Paris to Clermont-Ferrand on Thursday, it's clear the organisers have had a rethink about how they choose their headliners. Last year was top-heavy with names like Peter Doherty, Richard Hawley and Peter Hook; all veterans and, in the case of the latter two, perhaps too far removed [...]
State ventures back to the French city of Clermont-Ferrand this week for the 2011 edition of one of our favourite festivals – Europavox . The boutique event prides itself in showcasing the best in emerging European music talent, whilst also drawing more established acts from across the continent. Apart from the live performances, the festival also gathers together music journalists and industry professionals from each of the 27 EU member states for a series of conferences and workshops, with the aim of improving support structures for artists and creating pan-European contact networks for booking agents, PR and promoters. If you like Gotan Project or the Cafe Del Mar series of chillout music with International flavor, then this track will be a win for you. The track makes use of stems from the soundtrack written and produced by Hans Zimmer from the movie: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Also features Rodrigo y Gabriela on acoustic guitars. With this mix, The Reverb Junkie made an incredible arrangement and went one step further by writing her song on-top of it. From which I took the track and [...]

A couple weeks back, I attended the Undergraduate Composers Collective 3rd Annual Winter Concert here at Princeton. I will never cease to be impressed by the talents my peers have - I can't imagine having the compositional skills some of these students have, never mind having the time to compose while juggling schoolwork. While several of the composers had very impressive pieces - Rhodes scholar DiBerardino's Sasco Creek was simultaneously mind-melding and face melting - the piece that stuck with me was the concert's first. Hana Shin '13 composed an impressive Tango entitled Los Momentos. While sections were [...]
