Can you believe I haven't done this already? Shame on me! The Fab Four's pedigree needs no introduction. Easily the most influential, most talented, and least timeless rock-and-roll band of all time. I'm going to do this the way I handled all three Neil Young A to Z posts: [...]

As a culture vulture, I have a particular fondness for the iconography of Hip Hop and Hardcore Rap; as a fan of trope and politic, I've always admired the complex rhyme and rhythm they bring to the table. But I never really made a connection with hardcore rap as a cultural form. I'm an outsider on the streets; I can appreciate their gritty reality only as a sociologist can appreciate the poverty dynamic of his cityscape under the microscope. Though a six month stint in Boston's inner city as a member of [...]

Remember the movie Almost Famous when Billy Crudup's character dropped acid at a high school party and ended up on the roof shouting "I am a Golden God" before jumping into the pool? Well at SXSW 2008, we witnessed the same scene only it was on top of the Flamingo Cantina during a Dr. Dog performance. And instead of Billy Crudup, it was some guy in bright red pants. It was a sunny afternoon and I was sipping my ice cold beer. I soon became fearful that something might be amiss when I saw the a [...]
David Bowie's Queen Bitch , from his classic 1971 album Hunky Dory , experienced a revival of sorts when it was featured in the trailer for Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic in 2004, which is admittedly when I first heard and fell in love with the song. I've definitely noticed a heightened exposure to the song in the past couple years, whether it's heard as pre-show music before a concert, an influx of covers, or its inclusion in last year's Rock Band as a downloadable track. Not since ELO's Mr. Blue Sky can I [...]

mėnuo dar nesibaigė, bet jo pabaigoje ne koverius aptarinėsim, o važinėsim po visokius kaimus ir gyvenvietes giminių lankyt, dovanėlių dalyt. todėl dabar pats laikas apžvelgti dėmesio verčiausius gruodžio koveriukus :) pradėčiau, aišku, nuo bloge jau minėto pražioplinimo: cat power - stuck inside of mobile with the memphis blues again - mėgstamiausia daina iš bob dylano gyvenimo apžvalgos-filmo „i'm not there" garso takelio. pats soundtrackas rimtai pretenduotų į šių metų mano asmeninį trejetuką. kitas minėtas gerulis - jimmy eat world - last christmas . kai pagalvoji, kiek nedaug šis koveris skiriasi nuo originalo, kyla [...]

KC Turner These songs are nasty. We find the gangsta life endless entertaining and silly. You probably shouldn't listen to them around the easily offended. We've added this break to protect the eyes of the innocent. (more...)

I ask you, what's not to like about a band with a member named Shinyribs Russell? It's the Gourds out of Austin, Texas. You may have heard a funny bluegrass version of Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice" several years back (in the free Napster-era when we were all pinching ourselves - "holy shit, I can find any song I want!"). Many folks wrongly tagged the song as coming from Phish, but nope, it was the Gourds. They released their latest, Noble Creatures , back in July. I just picked it up on eMusic [...]

I have a few miserable pals on the blogosphere at the moment. Mind you, given the diaristic (yes, I know that's not a word - like a diary... mmm, diuretic? - no, that's worse... Seesh, didn't even close the brackets. Where was I? Ah, yes, given the diuretic nature of the blogosphere I suppose this shouldn't be [...]
If you are an unknown band looking for exposure, I'm pretty sure all you need to do is cover a rap song. If you can work out an acoustic or bluegrass version, you're bound to get people playing it at parties and dumb ass bloggers like me posting mp3's on their sites. You might even score yourself a hit. Remember Dynamite Hack ? If you are too much of a purist to get suckered in to these shameless cover songs, I offer a challenge. At your next party, get your friends all liquored up and put [...]
If a person is going to dis hip-hop, inevitably they will mention sampling. "Fucker's can not even write their own songs! Take someone else's music and talk over it....where is the talent in that?" blah blah blah.... While there are a multitude of angles from which to attack this argument, I am not here to convince people of the legitimacy of hip-hop as an art. If you can not recognize it on your own then you are probably an asshole. The other day I was listening to the new Swollen Members cd, Black Magic, while I ran some [...]
