This three-chord ditty, loosely based on Hernán Cortés, is originally off the 1970 Neil Young & Crazy Horse album Zuma . The simplicity and shear length of the tune makes it a prime candidate for cover renditions, and more of then than not... guest appearances. Often times those sit-ins include Neil Young himself as Neil has played Cortez with two of this week's contestants. Fun fact: the original take had an extra verse at the end that was lost due to a problem in the studio. When Neil was [...]
Son House's version of this song is the devenitive version as far as I am concerned. But I'm trying to not be such a purist, and this song is a good jumping off point. Lyrics of John The Revelator From Wikipedia The lyrics below are Blind Willie Johnson's version of "John the Revelator". Subsequent versions feature a variety of substituted verses and different interpretations of Johnson's lyrics. [call] Well who's that a-writin'? [response] [...]
Following in the footsteps of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Widespread Panic, Gov't Mule has expanded its summer itinerary beyond a slew of festival appearances. Throughout the month of July and August, the country jammers will hit a number of U.S. pavilions and amphitheatres between appearances at Mountain Jam , Bonnaroo , and Rothbury , both in support of last year's two-disc DVD, The Tale of Two Cities , and to introduce fans to material off their yet-to-be-titled upcoming studio effort, which is due for release this fall. And, like the other smart, [...]
I've got a set of festival announcements that I wanted to post and comment on a bit, as the festivals that have been announced this year are all looking pretty amazing from where I'm sitting. There's so much uniqueness in the way festivals are occurring these days, with Carrie's post called Festival Fever fully summarizing the sentiment I've long tried to express through the content on the blog overall. In deciding to see a festival these days, aside from the line-up, a big part of the draw is the festival setting. Castle, pirate [...]

Bob Dylan's new album, Together Through Life was just released on April 28th. This was his 46th release… wow. That's 39 albums more than Right Said Fred. Yes, Right Said Fred released seven albums. Today's Bit O' Covers post focuses not on the new release, but on a classic Dylan song written in 1967, "I Shall Be Released". Dylan recorded two versions of this song - the first was done in 1967 but not released until 1991's The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3 [Rare And Unreleased, 1961-1991] 2 disc set, and the second was done for [...]

With the NCAA Tournament getting into full swing this evening, we wanted to create a little March Madness around these parts as well. We've taken 16 past Cover Wars champions and matched them up against each other to see which one our readers thinks is the best of the best. Today, we kick things off with our round of 16 which finds some tough matchups in each of our brackets. Let's take a look at the matchups: 1. Killing In The Name - tDB vs. [...]
Fearless is one of the best, if not the best song written in Open G Tuning . Waters: "What's interesting about it, for me, is that it's interesting musically: (hums riff). Funnily enough, that was a tuning that Syd showed me. It's a really beautiful open G tuning, for anybody who wants to tune their guitar: G-G-D-G-B-B." Source: pink-floyd.org This Gilmour/Waters composition is on Pink Floyd's sixth studio album, a 1971 release titled Meddle. Looking back seven days, Bonerama [...]
