Local news personalities could do a darn good fluff piece about Grabass Charlestons : the kind of band becoming increasingly rare in these days, hometown heroes, touring for a decade, day jobs, then-triumph! Modest southern-style triumph! Dale & the Careeners is the best thing they've ever done. Listening the this album, the spirit never leaves you. You put your faith in Dale from the first song " Stormy Weather " and it lifts you over any inconsistency or crack in the album (not that there are many!). It's a [...]

There were so many good albums this year that I couldn't make the decision to rank them, and I know that's not the most important decision anyway, so this year's best-of list is in groups with no internal order. This is the art I spent my cherished/wasted time consuming this year. Hope everybody's upcoming year is full of growth. Albums, Best of the Best: Franz Nicolay - Do the Struggle - tentative cynic-folk, sincere show-rock ( 9B review ) [...]

Flash back to an old house with a strawberry patch out back. It is a patch worthy of a late night rendevous to reclaim the fruits of youth. This is my childhood. Every February/March when the strawberries come out full bore and Florida celebrates with a festival nestled somewhere within the vast fruit fields I think back to that tiny patch. The beginning. The place where fresh fruit met whipped cream or cake or ice cream or cereal. Where big fat and juicy was the name of the game. A certain bit of nostalgia comes with strawberry season and that [...]
Like a lot of the previously featured towns in the Area Codes series, Gainesville, FL has a rich history as a music scene, going back to the '70s when some guy named Tom Petty ran ramshod in town. In the '90s, No Idea Records, and its associated bands, became a major magnet for Florida's youth culture, with acts like Against Me!, Hot Water Music, Jawbreaker and others in wrapped up in No Idea's fold. While hints of that punk spirit can still be detected in the modern music that Gainesville is putting out - pop-tinged punk and hardcore [...]

Adding to the usual debauchery of Halloween weekend is the FEST in Gainesville, Florida. For three days (October 30 through November 1) avid music fans permeate Gator town. With over 300 bands playing in a dozen venues throughout the city, paired with impromptu and house shows, the FEST is like a punk enthusiast's scavenger hunt to awesomeness. The FEST is filled with ink, beards, and the Pabst Blue Ribbon that pours out of sweaty fans' pores, as they fist pump and crowd surf. Outside of the music related fare, there is Friday's FEST-organized pool party at [...]

Now in its sixth year, Los Angeles' F Yeah Fest has evolved into yet another incarnation.
