The long awaited third album -- now self-titled -- from fine, soulful Vermont jam-rockers Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and producer and writing collaborator Mark Batson (Maroon 5, Alicia Keys, Nas) has received a green light for a June 8 release via Hollywood Records. Batson is considered by some a fairly unorthodox choice considering his extensive work in the world of hip-hop and R+B and the oft-maligned 2005 Dave Matthews album Stand Up , but Potter disputes the naysayers. "I liked the idea of writing with someone who was totally [...]
When it comes to giving a nod to the past, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals have never shied away from including classic rock covers in concert, tackling tracks from the likes of Neil Young to The Stones to Led Zeppelin. The latest throwback tune to make its way into the Vermont-based band's repertoire is Jefferson Airplane's not so sly nod to taking psychedelics, thinly veiled in Alice In Wonderland references - White Rabbit - which the band has been asked to contribute to the companion soundtrack for Tim Burton's upcoming Alice movie starring Johnny Depp that [...]
Earphoria Interview First look at "Things I Never Needed" back in June of '09 Getting In Tune (The Who)
photo credit: Adrien Broom It seems like forever since the sophomore Grace Potter & The Nocturnals album This is Somewhere came out. In fact, in Internet and music blog years, August 2007 was forever ago! In my review of This is Somewhere , I observe that Grace Potter and her band were, "an earthy, honest, and grounded band excited for this opportunity to take their careers to the next level." In the over two years since the release of Somewhere , a lot has transpired [...]

A lot has been made of the utterly disastrous soundtrack for the upcoming Burton-feature film, Alice in Wonderland. One cut you simply cannot lump with the rest, however, is the sensational cover of White Rabbit (fitting) , that the Vermont-bred Grace Potter and the Nocturnals offer up on the disc. At their Burlington Waterfront Show in 2009, GPatN performed a live rendition of the song. Their cover really starts to [...]
By: David Schultz On June 8, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals will release their self-titled third album on Hollywood Records. Their long awaited follow-up to 2007's This Is Somewhere bears the fruits of their collaboration with Mark Batson and moves the T-Bone Burnett album into the realm once occupied by Chinese Democracy and Smile. Grace Potter & The Nocturnals will feature the five piece lineup

I should be able to ramble on for a while this time, I have 2 hours to kill before my shuttle to the airport. And since I'm dressed in "back to bad weather" attire, I'm not going to the beach. Update: and of course I ran into folks and didn't actually finish this post until I arrived home. So yesterday was the final day of the 1st Annual (confirmed, it will happen again next year) Gov't Mule Island Exodus. And it ended in fine style. Lets [...]

I'll try to blather on a bit longer than I did yesterday. Please excuse any spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and/or general incoherence. Lack of sleep combined with... Jamaica.. has me a bit dazed. Lets see if I can do the second day in a vaguely accurate chronological order. Wake up, eat. Lay on beach. Swim. The merch table. Fortunately I happened to walk by as it had just opened, and a new friend (you make lots here) was more than happy to take my $ and buy [...]
Last week, we told you about that the Tim Burton-directed, Johnny Depp-starring Alice In Wonderland film was going to have a song on its soundtrack from the combined pop-punk genius of Mark Hoppus and Pete Wentz. Now, according to MySpace (via TwentyFourBit ), the tracklist for said effort, which is being called Almost Alice , has been announced and we're in for a few more surprises. First, there's tons of pop-punk in this album. Aside from the Hoppus-Wentz collabo, the likes of Avril Lavigne, All [...]
By: David Schultz Since the dawn of time when the first band traveled to the neighboring city to play for the locals, the touring paradigm has remained relatively unchanged: artist releases album, gets on the tour bus and brings the music to theaters and arenas all across the country. Levon Helm's Midnight Rambles puts a completely different spin on entire experience, taking the philosophy that

A lot of people are looking forwards to Tim Burton's upcoming adaptation of Alice In Wonderland. I'm rather indifferent to the film, not being a huge fan of Burton's films, but I did like this little bit of news that came across my desk earlier today: Grace Potter & The Nocturnals will be appearing on the official soundtrack, with a cover of Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit. Movie soundtracks are usually pretty hit or miss for me, and this one doesn't look like anything special, with the usual mix of popular and hip artists. Still, it'll be fun to hear a [...]

Where the rest of the world has New York City's epic ball drop in Times Square, Vermont has Grace Potter to ring in the new year. It's rapidly becoming an annual event, with several lead-up concerts at the Higher Ground to meet demand, and the overall event has become a highly anticipated run of concerts. I wasn't able to attend the New Year's Eve show, but I was able to attend the second concert on the 27th, with Alberta Cross opening up for the Nocturnals. All in all, I came away from the show pretty disappointed. The Nocturnals [...]
By: David Schultz April may have been the cruelest month for T.S. Eliot but for the music business, December can be quite a bear. Practically every new release of value that could come out between Thanksgiving and the New Year gets shelved until the dropping of the ball in Times Square and rock stars like to spend the holidays with their families just like the rest of us. The dearth of
On tour now with Brett Dennen, Grace Potter and her new band, the Nocturnals , haven't stopped rocking out since they touched the road. Having kicked off mid-November in Nashville, Potter and Dennen have been criss-crossing the country for the last month, performing a recent show at the 9:30 Club that tore up the place. This is the third or fourth year in a row that Potter played an early winter show at the famed U Street venue, though it's the first time her band wasn't the sole headliner. Despite an early start, the floor was already [...]
Vermont's Grace Potter and the Nocturnals brought their brand of high-octane retro-rock to the Fillmore last night. Given their obvious '60s influences, the historic Fillmore stage served as a perfect setting. Judging by the platoon of videographers filming a live DVD, the band clearly also thought the setting a good fit. Potter's career has been an interesting one to follow. The Nocturnals burst onto the scene in 2004 as a fresh-faced jam band with southern and soul influences. Five short years later, they've appeared on stage with big names like the [...]
