Just thought I would share as I was listening to the above album on the way to work. The album is spectacular - this is roots banjo folk at its best. Released last year to little fanfare (why, oh why) this album is a mix of full on banjo honky tonk to slow folk(y) balladeer material. And it has grit. Grit that finds itself placed between an 80 year old tough as nails bluesman to a young punk rocker. And it really works. I have said many times that I can get down with a lot of folk themed styles [...]

Graham Lindsey [photo by Christine Hromadka] Graham Lindsey’s debut record Famous Anonymous Wilderness was released in September of 2003. To this day it remains one of my favorite debut records from any artist or genre over the last five years. The stunning, stark songs found on Famous Anonymous Wilderness (released on Nashville-based indie label Catamount Records) sound like a cross between the poetry Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a Gonna Fall” and the Gothic country-folk of Gillian Welch’s “My Morphine”. The album’s eleven [...]
Watching the snow flakes fly in this little Graham Lindsey video gem made me realize that maybe ninety-one degree heat with a shot of humidity isn't so bad after all. This video also reminded me just how much I love Graham Lindsey's sound. Not that I really needed a reminder. Graham's 2003 debut Famous Anonymous Wilderness ranks pretty high on my list of favorite albums this decade and as debut records go, Wilderness is nothing short of brilliant. I actually spent the better part of [...]

This one ain't new to me, but it is from one of my favourite albums of last year - "We Are All Alone In This Together" from the banjo wielding Lindsey. The song, friends is "Tomorrow is Another Night" and it is one of the best. As I tend to, I enjoy a unique voice or vocal delivery and Graham Lindsey does not disappoint and do not shy away as once it finds it's home, you will need more and more. The album in question where this track is from is full of Southern style blues [...]

Though acclaimed in the Euro/UK folk scene, the name Graham Lindsey remains less than embraced in the states. Not to mention, it’s an unfortunate malapropism of a South Carolina senator. Americana/Folk lovers around the globe must face both of these lamentable injustices. Released in 2008, We Are All Alone In This Together and The Mine EP were recorded by producer Steve Deutsch and released on Spacebar Recordings. Lindsey penned and recorded them during a sojourn from his native Wisconsin to Montana. The albums afford you all the gracious paradoxes the wilderness likely [...]

Everyone else is doing it so why shouldn't I? That's right, listmania 2008 is finally here and what I've got to present to you here is the first half of my favorite albums of the year. Love 'em or hate 'em, these are the albums that made the cut. I decided to stick with a list of 50 this year mainly because that's what I've done in the past and also because 2008 was a really great year for new music and narrowing down the list to fewer than this just seemed unfair. [...]

So here we are. Best albums of 2008. Good year I have to say, I may have contenders for best of decade that come from this very year - good sign, no? Disclaimer - While I tend to convince myself that I know music, I only know what I hear and actually take the time to really dig my teeth into. That being said, I am always correct and I take criticism terribly. There is always something I discover too late to move up the list or something I forget all [...]

Today I've decided to look back on another category in music: the underappreciated and underutilized EP. Best EPs of 2008 10. Princeton - The Bloomsbury EP This west coast band put together something short and boppy. Review 9. Brandi Carlile - Live In Boston She proved she was more than pop rock with this EP which includes a cover [...]

Not a lot to say this week. I've been really busy, and haven't had a lot of time for posting or even collecting music- so the mix is a little shorter than normal. Enjoy the mix and your holiday next week (if you celebrate). Hopefully, I'll have time to post a bit more then! Tracklisting: Ben Sollee - Only A Song Eels - Man Up Florence And The [...]

Here are The Wheel’s Still In Spin ’s suggested new releases. Anathallo – Canopy Glow | CD or MP3 Download “The River” (mp3) This 7-piece band has made lush, indie pop album. Horns, strings, pianos, synths, and guitars are layered atop of the tender yet stirring drumming. Amongst all these musical layers, the vocal harmonies are captivating. Magically, somehow, this album seems to [...]

SIDE A 1. Iron & Wine - The Same Old Song (Four Tops Cover) 2. Bon Iver - I Believe In You (Talk Talk Cover) 3. Man Man - I'd Rather Go Blind (Etta James Cover) 4. Crooked Fingers - Solitary Man (Neil Diamond Cover) 5. Blackbird Harmony - Hello (Lionel Ritchie Cover) 6. No Age - It's Oh So Quiet (Bjork Cover) 7. Denison Witmer - These Days (Jackson Browne Cover) [...]

Where do I start with transplanted Wisconsinite (Wisconsonian?, Wisconsinese?) alt/folk singer-songwriter Graham Lindsey? His new album We Are All Alone In This Together (available Nov. 18th) is a technically proficient album. Graham's playing is impeccable. As it that of the many sessions musicians that play on the record (including once again Greg Leisz). Lyrically Lindsey weaves strong tales. It works very well with the musical support. The storyline are somewhat dark and offbeat, an American Gothic feel that is not unlike that [...]
fitting that graham lindsey lives in the mountains of montana, because his music, particularly his terrific new album, we are all alone in this together , and the companion ep, the mine , feels elemental and beautiful and haunting. no depression magazine compared his debut album ( famous anonymous wilderness ) to gillian welch, but to our ears this new disk, in tonality of voice & style & composition, better conjures bob dylan. (not to mention the overt nod in the song title "i don't know, babe.") which comparison holds greater measure is likely, um, anyone's [...]

A tidal wave of great new covers from indiefolk to freak to alt-country has slammed through my mailbox in the past week or two, jamming my aural pleasure circuits and tipping over onto the page Our usual three-artist once-a-month model is so unprepared to handle the onslaught, I thought I'd try something a little different. So this week, we'll be exclusively featuring brand new coversong from all corners of the folk tent. And here is where I'd usually say "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to our Late Fall/Early Winter [...]

Graham Lindsey (at least for now) lives in Montana with his wife and two dogs after having made stops in the driftless woods of Wisconsin, New York's chrome canyons, a Nebraska farmhouse, and New Orleans along the way. Luckily this well-traveled troubadour has been bringing his guitar and banjo with him wherever he goes, and (recently) in Montana recorded his two new releases We Are All Alone In This Together and its companion The Mine EP. I can easily sum these two records up in one word (amazing) but it will most certainly [...]
New Wax I'm embarrassed to admit that I'd never heard of Graham Lindsey until recently, and that saddens me, but some of the most intriguing artists toil in relative obscurity. That being said, Lindsey has racked up a considerable amount of critical praise in his short tenure as folk troubadour. His 2003 debut album was described by No Depression Magazine as "the most audacious roots songwriter's debut since Gillian Welch's Revival " and Lindsey has been heralded by the likes of Rolling Stone and The Onion. After [...]

Graham Lindsey's (ex Old Skull) new record We Are All Alone In This Together is as somber and questioning as the title implies. It's a thoughtful and atmospheric work made up of Graham's haunted vocals, banjo and eerie pedal steel. It's fitting that it's release date comes just after Halloween on Nov. 18. I wrote about Graham here first. The new record is available on SpaceBar Records . If I Ever Make It Home

Is this Dylan's son? No seriously...Wow! Graham Lindsey was passed along to me by Spacebar Records and I'm very glad they did. Below are some exact notes that I scribbled down upon sitting down with Hell Under the Skullbone s: "Nice artwork-think liner notes filled with lyrics. Believes it" All written down before hearing a single word, oh and to bands out there, I really like lyrics included. I know it's more expensive to add them [...]
I've been meaning to post about Graham Lindsey for a couple months now, and today is finally the day. He resides in that pleasant intersection where folk, country, and twang meet. But with an edge. To be honest, more than anything else, he makes me think of the Kingston Trio, though that's more of a subjective feeling than because they're that similar. A more reasonable comparison might be Hank Williams if he grew up listening to punk music. His new album is Hell Under the Skullbones , and it's quite [...]
