Just thought I would share as I was listening to the above album on the way to work. The album is spectacular - this is roots banjo folk at its best. Released last year to little fanfare (why, oh why) this album is a mix of full on banjo honky tonk to slow folk(y) balladeer material. And it has grit. Grit that finds itself placed between an 80 year old tough as nails bluesman to a young punk rocker. And it really works. To this day it remains one of my favorite debut records from any artist or genre over the last five years. Watching the snow flakes fly in this little Graham Lindsey video gem made me realize that maybe ninety-one degree heat with a shot of humidity isn't so bad after all. This video also reminded me just how much I love Graham Lindsey's sound. Not that I really needed a reminder. Graham's 2003 debut Famous Anonymous Wilderness ranks pretty high on my list of favorite albums this decade and as debut records go, Wilderness is nothing short of brilliant. This one ain't new to me, but it is from one of my favourite albums of last year - "We Are All Alone In This Together" from the banjo wielding Lindsey. The song, friends is "Tomorrow is Another Night" and it is one of the best. As I tend to, I enjoy a unique voice or vocal delivery and Graham Lindsey does not disappoint and do not shy away as once it finds it's home, you will need more and more. Though acclaimed in the Euro/UK folk scene, the name Graham Lindsey remains less than embraced in the states. Not to mention, its an unfortunate malapropism of a South Carolina senator. Americana/Folk lovers around the globe must face both of these lamentable injustices. Everyone else is doing it so why shouldn't I? That's right, listmania 2008 is finally here and what I've got to present to you here is the first half of my favorite albums of the year. Where do I start with transplanted Wisconsinite (Wisconsonian?, Wisconsinese?) alt/folk singer-songwriter Graham Lindsey? His new album We Are All Alone In This Together (available Nov. 18th) is a technically proficient album. Graham's playing is impeccable. As it that of the many sessions musicians that play on the record (including once again Greg Leisz). Lyrically Lindsey weaves strong tales. It works very well with the musical support. fitting that graham lindsey lives in the mountains of montana, because his music, particularly his terrific new album, we are all alone in this together , and the companion ep, the mine , feels elemental and beautiful and haunting. no depression magazine compared his debut album ( famous anonymous wilderness ) to gillian welch, but to our ears this new disk, in tonality of voice & style & composition, better conjures bob dylan. Graham Lindsey (at least for now) lives in Montana with his wife and two dogs after having made stops in the driftless woods of Wisconsin, New York's chrome canyons, a Nebraska farmhouse, and New Orleans along the way. Luckily this well-traveled troubadour has been bringing his guitar and banjo with him wherever he goes, and (recently) in Montana recorded his two new releases We Are All Alone In This Together and its companion The Mine EP. New Wax I'm embarrassed to admit that I'd never heard of Graham Lindsey until recently, and that saddens me, but some of the most intriguing artists toil in relative obscurity. That being said, Lindsey has racked up a considerable amount of critical praise in his short tenure as folk troubadour. His 2003 debut album was described by No Depression Magazine as "the most audacious roots songwriter's debut since Gillian Welch's Revival " and Lindsey has been heralded by the likes of Rolling Stone and The Onion. Graham Lindsey's (ex Old Skull) new record We Are All Alone In This Together is as somber and questioning as the title implies. It's a thoughtful and atmospheric work made up of Graham's haunted vocals, banjo and eerie pedal steel. It's fitting that it's release date comes just after Halloween on Nov. 18.
