TMOT's top 5 albums of 2011, in no particular order 1. Bon Iver, Bon Iver Forget Emma, forget Kanye, forget the Grammys, forget the cabin in the woods. Jubilation is not apparent in Bon Iver, not at first. But how else could "Towers" be described? It's a gorgeous love song, and despite the occasionally unintelligible [...]

Here is part two of the Best of 2011 Canadian albums. Sorry for the delay because of the Christmas season. Hope everyone had a great holiday? Here is the ranking from #40-31. 40. The Steve Adamyk Band - Forever Won't Wait Listen to Ontario and Bored of Love . 39. Little Scream - The Golden Record Listen to The [...]
by teepoo Rather than post you some stupidly generic list of albums you are supposed to expect, I think my top 10 is going to be based on the fact I actually listened to these releases the most this year. Come on , if an album is good, it must be one of your top plays right? These are based on stats according to iTunes and Last.fm plays as well as the fact I physically own them. I don't believe in people's top lists if they [...]

Awhile back I decided to use a film camera and take some photos from this year's NXNE Festival in Toronto. Bought a roll of B&W Illford 36 exposure film. Wanted to see what the results were on printed photo/film. Took me awhile to get the film developed and scanned the good photos I took (Wish I got a better scanner. Anyone know a good brand to buy?) It would be too much to type up on which acts [...]

Graham Wright plays an often-overlooked role (keyboardist) in an often-underrated band (Tokyo Police Club), so it's not like his solo bow comes with a lot of the usual baggage. Hell, even when the Hold Steady's ivory-tickler Franz Nicolay embarked on a similar side project, certain expectations came with the mustache. All we know is that there's label machinery legitimizing Shirts vs. Skins as more than just downtime with Bandcamp, that it's deemed worthy of our attention by more than just the guy who made it. So what does Wright have to say? Read more »

Tweet Tokyo Police Club have only put out around 90 minutes of music in two albums and two EPs, but somewhere in that less-than-prodigious output, keyboardist Graham Wright has a small solo output going. His first full album "Shirts vs. Skins" is an album that passes by in the blink of an eye, with only one song that cracks the three-minute mark, and a few that are shorter than two minutes. An album that starts with the line "Just a pair of chucklefucks with [...]
Overcooked wit and insincerity, combined with faceless instrumentation sinks an album otherwise filled with great pop hooks. I'm at a place with music criticism where I've done it for enough times I know what elements I'm going to focus on pretty early into my listening. Bandcamp: [...]

I'm sure going solo is a harrowing experience for band members. Stepping away from your comfort zone to do something very different from what your audience is used to/expects from you must be a difficult decision. That's why Graham Wright's new solo record is kind of a pleasant surprise: it isn't all about willfully subverting expectation. It feels more like having some extra songs and not knowing what to do with them. The keyboardist and vocalist with the acclaimed fuzz-pop combo Tokyo Police Club doesn't make a point of casting off his full-time band's youthful exuberence or the [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases Mike Juneau With the recent release of 'Shirts vs. Skins,' we've gotten to see a whole new side of Tokyo Police Club 's keyboardist Graham Wright. He's stepped into the light with his solo debut , showcasing his vocals and other instrumental talents, and finally letting his intuition guide the music. "My way is a lot more gut," he tells Spinner. "I'm more interested [...]
Tokyo Police Club keyboardist Graham Wright made his debut as a solo artist in 2008 with The Lakes of Alberta, an EP available in a pay-as-you-want format on Bandcamp . Since then, Wright has kept busy with Tokyo Police Club's sophomore LP, Champ, and apparently writing over 60 more songs as a solo artist. Twelve of these songs made it onto his full-length debut, Shirts vs. Skins . Graham Wright went in a folky, acoustic direction on The Lakes of Alberta , but Shirts vs. Skins is a power pop [...]

Hope everyone is having a great post Canada Day? For those in the USA getting ready for their 4th of July celebrations. Here is this week's music singles chart. For the week ending July 3 - 9. This week's #1 single is by Cults and I can't get that song out of my head. There is something about that song which I love and showcases the vocal range of Madeline. Once again it's time for a quick look at things I simply couldn't get around to this week. In this edition: Graham Wright, Shirts Vs. Skins Tokyo Police Club member and CBC Radio 3 released his new solo album this week. The keyboard sounds of TPC have been toned down. In their place are some catchy indie pop tunes with plenty of oooo, ahhhs and other hooky devices. Our friends at Greyowl

This is the story of NXNE told through the perspective of its softer moments, of the things that were there before and will remain to stay long after the last hashtag.

From back woods indie folk to club-filling electronica, the last Tuesday of June sets itself up perfectly for audiophiles looking to finalize a holiday weekend mix. A group we frequently see on playlists is Handsome Furs , and for a reason. The Canadian pair of artists consistently provide catchy tracks, so look into their Sound Kapital album off of SubPop Records. Synth master and producer Seth Haley, AKA Com Truise , delivers his Galatic Melt album. He's got something for the obsessed remix fans out there, [...]
