Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. Any Joe Blow music blogger can throw together a playlist of decent songs (believe me, I have tried one too many times). Rarely am I high-fiving strangers or chest-bumping my ladyfriend when a new one pops up on the interweb...unless of course if it comes from a select few of my favourite music junkies. We have already seen a couple from I am Friends, You are Fuel and Music For Ants recently...stepping into the spotlight today is the newest release from Canadian superbloggers, Ca Va Cool . So good! Get it [...]

Sometimes, there's too much good music. Mixtapes are a chance to pick and choose from the spectrum of too muchness and bring friends and readers some of the best of what I've heard recently. But sometimes there's still too much, which is why I decided to split this mix into 2 parts, or 'sides', if you will. Part 1 is California Sunrise, because as you'll learn quickly in the captions below, California has inadvertently become a major theme in my listening choices as of late. Like past mixes, this one's heavily influenced by how I feel with the on-set of my favourite time [...]

This will be my first review with no photos about TimeKode . I wasn't planning on taking photos since I was there just to have a great time and dance. I rarely cover the Ottawa dance club scene that much. For those that don't know: TimeKode is a dance club that plays all things soulful, funky, and innovative music which happens every third Friday of the month. Takes place at Eri Cafe on 953 Somerset St W. I didn't know Bonjay got their start at TimeKode [...]

I started listening to these guys a coupe of years back when they opened for Shad K at the Mod Club and loved them so much I bought 2 of their cds, one for my self and one for my sister. WOW these guys really know how to incorporate genres together.. blues, jazz, dub, reggae, rock, rap, hip hop, there's really no genre that describes them best because it's all one big mix, and they can pull it off. I've heard a lot of bands that attempt this wide mix of genres but it never works. When I briefly talked [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Holy Hell At their inaugural loft party at last year's edition of Pop Montreal , Ottawa-based rock group Hollerado introduced the Nacho House concept: a late-night mixture of booze, bands and a supply of the group's own Nacho recipe. For their return this year, the organizers needed to one-up themselves. Finding a new, more central location, they branched out from the energetic indie rock that dominated [...]
CBC Radio 3 Track of the Day. Guest Host, R3 Producer Brent Hodge: "Odario Williams from Grand Analog was one of my first interviews here at Radio 3 [...] and he is just such a gentleman..."
Here is part 2 of who I or you should check out at NXNE in Toronto. So this will be Thursday night's event. It is going to be busy insane Thursday at NXNE. A hard decision to choose on who to see badly. Let's check out who will be playing. Found out that from Thursday to Sunday there is going to be a " Live in Bellwoods " picnic series at Trinity Bellwoods Park. It is present by The Musebox and Humble Empire. [...]

Yesterday we posted a preview of over 180 bands that we feel are worth checking out at South by Southwest. Today we focus on 25 artists that are among the best of the 2000+ participating bands at SXSW. The futures of these bands are bright, and we certainly recommend seeing them play at least once during the festival in Austin this weekend. Allo, Darlin' (Myspace) Hometown: London, England Label: WeePop, Fortuna Pop Allo, Darlin' - Dear Stephen Hawking [...]

Over the course of the last three weeks, we've given you an A to Z preview of the best of SXSW. Our ears are still numb, after listening to mp3's of every single band playing the festival. With SXSW finally here, we thought we'd give you a round-up of the ten bands we deem to be "the best". Whether you're coming down to Austin or sitting at home in....London, Paris or Beijing, we suggest you check out these bands. Click on the band name to find out more about the band. In our opinion, these [...]

And so it begins. Every year, we listen to mp3's of every band scheduled to appear at SXSW. We then present you with an A to Z preview of the bands that we think should earn your attention. Whether you're coming down to SXSW (recommended!) or just looking for new music, there's no better time of year. There's a variety of music here, so buckle up for some different sounds. We'll be previewing two letters per day, which'll take us right up to SXSW Music Week. Then we'll give you our picks for the [...]
In the end, we think this was truly a great year for music. We would argue that this was the year of the new band, with 75% of our top 20 consisting of debut albums. As we started going through this list, we recognized that we'd interviewed many of the bands listed. As you know, based on our refusal to accept advertising, we've been adamant in our refusal to be influenced by labels, promoters, etc.. Frankly, when we heard some of these albums, we were on the phone trying to track the bands down for an [...]

All right, the Ack is off gallivanting around Montreal with all the fancy music biz swells at M For Montreal , and yes, that leaves me back in Halifax minding the cyber store. And it also happens to be Thursday, so that means one thing: videos. We've had a couple of jam-packed editions of Video Hits over the last couple of weeks, and I wanted to keep that going, but I'd also been hyped on Canadian hip hop after spending the last week with Ghettosocks new album on repeat . So, guess what you're getting [...]

I guess I'm just a stubborn kind of fellow. I know that our focus tends to be on Brit-pop and Indie-rock, but I just can't help myself from asking you to free your mind. I remember growing up in Detroit, listening to the Canadian national radio station (CBC) and learning about "new wave/punk". They had a show called Brave New Waves and it aired from midnight to 4am, Monday thru Friday. Whenever anyone disparages Canadian music, I tell them that the entire base of my music knowledge starts with this Canadian radio show. Much to [...]

It's been a while since we had time to compile the best songs that have crossed our path recently. You'll find that we've added links to purchase some of the songs through iTunes. When that wasn't possible, we've given you the link to the band's myspace page. We're going to pass on describing the songs this time. Go in with an open mind and know that we're challenging you with the best music we could find. Grand Analog Electric City (Feat. Shad) [...]
You thought we were done, didn't you? Well, the promos and emails have been flying in at an ever increasing rate since our post this morning and this is a compilation of the stuff that's grabbed us. Best way to find out when these bands are playing is to click on the band name. That'll take you to their MySpace page. Enjoy! Grand Analog - Ok, I need you to open you mind because this isn't your normal TDOA fare. Please know that Land of the Loops, Chemical Brothers and Autechre [...]
I learned a valuable life lesson last evening. If your buddy pisses off a table of dudes by talking to one of their girlfriends, sending the alpha-dude a Pina colada does not smooth out the situation. Anyways, today's song comes from the Canadian hip-hop band Grand Analog . I Play My Kazoo can be found on the band's sophomore full-length album "Metropolis is Burning", released in May of this year. Typically, I don't listen to a lot of today's hip-hop, but I've made an exception for Grand Analog because of two reasons. The first is that the [...]

Dope track. You can cop the LP over on iTunes . We want to introduce you to Grand Analog , a raw collective of seasoned record collectors, musicians and self described beat junkies. Band leader and creator, Odario Williams , describes the Toronto-based Grand Analog sound as a beautiful mess of rap'n'roll, dub and soul. We would also like to let you know that Grand Analog has been invited to perform at CMJ in New York [...]

Toronto's dark-hued disco-rockers Lioness delve into the past for their silent film-inspired new video. "The 'You're My Heart' video is rooted in the concept of parallel universes, or other planes of existence," singer Vanessa Fischer tells Spinner. "It draws connections between alchemy, sorcery, science and eternal love." In keeping with Lioness' DIY aesthetic, the band's beatsmith Jeff Scheven directed the video (adding to his résumé, which also includes vids for TV on the Radio , the Organ , DFA1979 and his former group Controller.Controller ), while Fischer, whose day [...]
