"The 'You're My Heart' video is rooted in the concept of parallel universes, or other planes of existence," singer Vanessa Fischer tells Spinner. "It draws connections between alchemy, sorcery, science and eternal love." In keeping with Lioness' DIY aesthetic, the band's beatsmith Jeff Scheven directed the video (adding to his résumé, which also includes vids for TV on the Radio , the Organ , DFA1979 and his former group Controller.Controller ), while Fischer, whose day [...]

Not too long ago, mentioning "hip hop" and "live instruments" in the same sentence was kind of like using "baseball" and "steroids" together in the late 90's - it was a bit of a taboo. But these days hip hop has changed a bit, and just like steroids in baseball, (yes, I know you saw this coming) everyone is doing it . This move towards mainstream hip hop embracing live sounds, and even gravitating somewhat towards the indie rock scene, has been going on for a while, but things have already changed a great deal since Grand [...]

" ...Whatever you do, Whether you saving lives or play the kazoo." Another artist discovered via my favorite Internet stream, M3 Radio . This go round it's Canadian Hip-Hop collective Grand Analog making the noise. By pulling together their stripped pallet of heavy drums, jazzy trumpets, electric guitars and bass, frontman Odario Williams and crew create an orchestra of cool with their new single, "I Play My Kazoo." Featured on their recently released album Metropolis Is Burning , this door-opening track sounds like the White Stripes and Mos Def [...]

Grand Analog is a raw collective created in 2006. Its members are seasoned record collectors, musicians and self described beat junkies from around the way. You can easily find each of these characters honing the role of DJ at various local pubs and clubs in Toronto or Winnipeg. Band leader and creator, Odario Williams, describes the Grand Analog sound as a beautiful mess of rap'n'roll, dub and soul. "Grand Analog is unbalanced and dirty; never clean. Grand Analog is fuzzy with three coats of dust and reads like an old manual no longer in use". Calligraffiti, the debut [...]

Selection for Day 3 (March 20): Alela Diane I realised I've been going through a folk phase lately, constantly listening to music by talented acts such as Laura Marling , Laura Gibson and William Elliott Whitmore . Now, there's Alela Diane to add to the list. Her second album has received plenty of accolades in the music circles, and for obvious reasons so. "White As Diamonds" conjures an image of [...]
A month or so ago (or at least the last time I saw him) my uncle Craig said I had to take a listen to Grand Analog's Calligraffiti . So I did and I liked it. Now I'm not a hip-hop head or anything even close, but take my word that this is some pretty good shit. So even though Grand Analog calls Winnipeg, Canada home but they sound of parts much further South. On Calligraffiti dub-reggae mixes with bluesy hip-hop that sounds supremely casual and endlessly catchy. [...]
Ok, quickly think of the #1 Canadian city that comes to mind when I say the phrase "experimental hip hop". Now take the number of letters in that city's name and multiply it by 57. Now take the resulting number, add 344, and then divide it by 2. Now add 128 to that number and then divide the result by 66. Let me guess, you are left with 8, and what is Canada's 8th most populous city? Winnipeg, which was the city you were thinking of originally, was it not? Well if it wasn't, you are incorrect. This is because [...]
