Britpop Returns While Seattle was working up the Grunge (see last night's review of Mark Yarm's oral history of Grunge), the UK was reacting against the anti-fashion, heavy punk sound via the more upbeat, optimistic Britpop movement. Spearheaded by Blur and Oasis and incorporating everyone from Pulp to The Boo Radleys, from Elastica to Supergrass, Britpop drew on the UK's rich pop history to create a sound unashamedly wrapped in the union jack reclaiming it from the hands of the political far right. With a delicious sense [...]

Does environment stimulate inspiration or does inspiration dictate the environment? That's a question that can be asked over and over regarding Brisbane-based Grand Atlantic's latest album, Constellations . Whereas their last release How We Survive was an immediately addictive slice of psychedelic-dripped power pop—that quickly climbed into my top-10 release list for the year – Constellations is another acid trip altogether. Recorded in 12 days at the certainly-haunted Seacliff Lunatic Asylum near Dunedin, New Zealand, Constellations seems to be a reflection of that psycho-geographical location. Dark, [...]

The good fellas at Stage Mothers cooked up a tasty showcase of oz musical treats for the Bowery Ballroom show this past Sunday. Sample them below, then be sure to indulge in a full serving at SXSW on March 19 or The Echo LA on March 26 . Here are a few MV menu selections from NYC: Drawn From Bees - These Brissy natives seduced us with their "post-apocalyptic folk," even before they knew we were [...]

Following hot on the heels of the success of their Ripple Music debut split 7" single, Grand Atlantic keep the pedal to the metal, building momentum and converting the uninitiated to the Grand Atlantic ranks. Taken from Grand Atlantic's massively praised second album "How We Survive," the hot single "Used to Be the Sensitive Type" was remixed and remastered for inclusion on the Ripple Music split single which also featured the KEXP Top 20 hit by Sky Parade, "I Should Be Coming Up (But I Keep Coming Down." Since then, things have only gotten busier for the [...]
KEXP Top 20 song, "I Should be Coming Up (But I Keep Coming Down) by Sky Parade featured with Grand Atlantic on this split 7" of psychedelic pop perfection. Just in time for their World tour in support of their Top 20 KEXP song, the heady, trance-inducing psychedelic pop of Sky Parade is on full display [...]
Picture Credit As we near our blog's fourth anniversary, we've noticed literally hundreds of songs we've queued up but still haven't posted. (Some reach back a year or more.) We won't go into the boring reasons why this has happened, but over the next couple of weeks we're going to try to play a little catch-up. By now you've probably found a lot of these elsewhere, but we'll post them anyway.

News that just warms our Ripple hearts. From the Telegraph, the British Newspaper. Vinyl sales continue to rise as music fans appreciate the portability of the download, but love the feel, look, and sound of vinyl. At the Ripple, we're firmly committed to this point of view. With new double LP, gatefold vinyl releases of JPT Scare Band's Acid Blues is the White Man's Burden , and the grand re-release of Poobah's classic 1972, protometal masterpiece, Let Me In . Both albums coming this summer, not to mention [...]

Grand Atlantic To be honest, I'd heard little about Grand Atlantic. A quick look at their myspace revealed an accomplished band floating right under my very own nose, here in Brisbane. Having recently returned from a trip to the US and Canada to perform a host of notable gigs, including South by South West in Austin Texas, Grand Atlantic are now embarking on a hectic tri-state residency. Between Brisbane's Troubadour, Sydney's Landsdowne Hotel and Melbourne's Workers Club, the guys will clock up some serious mileage over the next month. [...]

If you missed Brit pop the first time around, then you might want to check out Australia's Grand Atlantic and their new album, How We Survive . Opening with a haze of guitar on "Coast Is Clear," the melodies stack up as the album travels eleven deep in Brit/power pop modes. Likely to remind you of distant musical times, "She's A Dreamer" even conjures up a bit of that classic Oasis charm. Have a taste below. music: Coast Is Clear [...]
Grand Atlantic doesn't sound like it's trying to impress at some showcase for record-company A&R people. Although frontman Phil Usher channels the same kind of late-'60s cool as Anton Newcombe, he shares none of the Brian Jonestown Massacre leader's insane pretensions. Instead, Usher injects his songs with empathy and self-doubt. Grand Atlantic is more like [...]
Its seems like more and more emails pile up in the ol' CoS mailbox everyday. Of course, while this is bad news for us (the work day just keeps getting longer and lonnnnggeer), it's good news for you. Said emails often include links and streams to the week's best new singles, remixes, and covers, and, because more emails means more links and stream, the length of our weekly Friday Mixtape also seems to growing beyond our wildest imagination. See, I told you it was good news... for you! Enjoy! (I'm going to now go and answer more emails). [...]

Grand Atlantic Brisbane, Queensland Australia If you're looking for the new Oasis then you need look no further than Aussie foursome Grand Atlantic. The band, named after Atlantic City's Grand Atlantic Hotel which not only harboured guests after the shark attacks made famous by the movie Jaws, combine the [...]
