With all the related Pixies items of the coming months (see: one-offs and box sets ), the last thing one would expect to see is news that the band's fearless frontman, Frank Black, has started a new band. But that's indeed the case. According to Rolling Stone , Black recently joined forces with wife Violet Clark for Grand Duchy , and come next month, will embark on a west coast tour in support of the band's newly released debut LP, Petit Fours . Tour dates below. Petit [...]

Black Francis , Frank Black or Charles Michael Kitteridge Thompson IV, and his missus , Violet Clark, or Violet Clark Thompson , have just done a new LP. The collabo is called Grand Duchy , and that doesn't sound kinda like douchey, nor does the album itself. In fact, it's a rather subtle likkle surprise if the truth be known, and the truth should always be known, should it not? What do you get when you take classic Pixies inclinations and fuse them with just a smidgen of synth pop and new wavey gorgeousfulness, and then have [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive Frank Black , the artist legally known as Charles Thompson, has lived in Eugene, Oregon for half a dozen years, during which time he's led the reunited Pixies , put out records as both Black Francis and Frank Black, worked with the late cult Christian rocker Larry Norman and produced the newest Art Brut record . He's also been a husband, and a father to five kids. Now his home life and his music life have merged: Black Francis and [...]

Lots of notable albums out this week, which include a couple of highly anticipated releases from Silversun Pickups and Metric. I've listened to the Metric record a few times, and I'm still not sure what to think about it. It still sounds a lot like Live It Out , which I didn't care for at all. I look at what Yeah Yeah Yeahs did with It's Blitz! and that's more in line with what I would've liked Fantasies to be more in tune with. Other releases include the latest from The [...]
I'm not sure I'm the one that should be writing this review. I respect the work of Frank Black because I see the influence the Pixies had on alternative rock and how his solo work led the way for modern noise rockers and power poppers. Honestly? I'm that guy that likes "Where Is My Mind?" but hasn't gotten around to absorbing the rest of the Pixies catalog. Come on, I know I'm not the only one. Raise your hands. All that said, I figured the debut album from [...]

Bill Callahan Sometimes I Wish I Were An Eagle Bill Callahan - "Jim Cain" from The Swill Merchant ..."The artist formerly known as Smog is back with another album. Bill Callahan's latest Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle offers up nine more songs of his trademark dark folk. I dare say this record almost sound hopeful though..." When he's not producing other bands' records , touring with the Pixies, or working on his solo career, Frank Black (aka Black Francis) is busy with some project or another. His latest, Grand Duchy, is a collaborative project with his wife, Violet Clark. The pair's debut, Petits Fours , is set to be released tomorrow, April 14. www.grandduchymusic.com www.cookingvinyl.com Tracklisting is after the jump... 1. Come On Over To My House 2. Lovesick 3. Fort Wayne 4. Seeing Stars [...]

mp3: Grand Duchy - Ermesinde (2009) New Black Francis outfit with his wife Violet. Feels a bit like a return to early, poppier, more unconventional Frank Black. Plus it has a vocoder (so everybody wins). web myspace
(Cooking Vinyl) Grand Duchy's debut album 'Petit Fours' is consistently and bizarrely experimental. Opener Come On Over To My House dabbles in soft-core metal and lightly strained lyrics. Standout track Fort Wayne goes for a heavy sixties-pop sound with added Fratellis-style la-la-las. Long Song ' heads off on another tangent, with attitude-fuelled girl vocals and old-school synthesizers. As individual tracks, these all work at least passably well; throw them together in an album, however and you're left with a bit of a musical car crash. Despite the odd gem, [...]

If you grew up in the 90s like some of us (no names will be mentioned), then you must be creaming your collective pants. Let's see, we've had Jane's Addiction , Blur , Faith No More , Sublime , Jesus Lizard , Pavement , Orbital and The Libertines all in the news in the past couple months about confirmed or rumored reunions. And that's not even taking into account The Specials or Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young . Well, add one more to your list. The already [...]

I think I'll preface this with the fact that Pixies are my No. 1 Favorite Band Of All Time. Basically, in my eyes, Black Francis can do no wrong (outside of his tiff with Kim Deal, but they're both crazy, so, really, whose fault was it?). I haven't listened to every Catholics record (there's EIGHT of them, for chrissakes), or heard every single solo album (there's eight of THEM, for chrissakes!) Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV has released over the past decade and a half. The man is prolific, by every definition of the word. But when I heard [...]
