Koss headphones and a porn star mustache got the chicks every time. Way back in the dark ages (the 1970s) I'd heard that a few albums sounded really great on headphones. Well, my parents had a stereo but we didn't have headphones. They cost about $12 apiece then, which in today's dollars would likely be a monthly mortgage payment. So I borrowed a couple of albums from my good friend Randy Fuller and took 'em home to experience "true stereo." My homemade headphones substitute was putting two stereo [...]

Grand Funk Railroad (also known as Grand Funk) is an American rock band that was highly popular during the 1970s. Grand Funk Railroad toured constantly to packed arenas worldwide. A popular take on the band during its heyday was that, although the critics hated them, audiences loved them.[1] The band's name is a play on words of the Grand Trunk Railroad, a railroad line that ran through the band's home town of Flint, Michigan. This documentary takes an extensive look at the story of Flint's Foremost Rock and Roll heroes. Read more »
At Birds. Where I drink quite often these days. I sit down and order a drink. Thesy remarks, "Dude, you look really good. You're glowing!" Uh…really? Are you sure I'm not just greasy? I guess people have noticed a change. We have this regular customer at the store who likes to say the dirtiest, most-sexually [...]

Music critics absolutely loathed Grand Funk Railroad and radio stations did not want their music played. Yet with constant touring, a loud take on the blues-rock power trio sound, and strong working-class appeal, Michigan's Mark Farner , Don Brewer and Mel Schacher became an early 70's powerhouse that radio finally couldn't ignore. Between 1969 and 1972 they put out 8 albums, five of them going platinum all without the benefit of radio. In 1970, they sold more albums than any other American band without the benefit of radio. In June 1971, Grand Funk became only the second group (after [...]

There's a new movie out, Get Him To The Greek , which is kind of a rock and roll road movie. Jonah Hill plays a low-level record company executive charged with babysitting a decadent rock star, played by British comedian Russell Brand. It's pretty amusing and fairly entertaining (Brand plays Aldous Snow, reprising his role from Forgetting Sarah Marshall ) and as you can imagine it gets all Serious and Introspective at the end. Although this is a wild comedy, the movie does offer a fairly accurate peek behind the curtains of the rock and roll [...]

It's always pretty weird when you find out someone in your family is freaky. Well, at least as freaky as you are. It was quite a shock to think my big sister could be freaky, but what other conclusion could I come to - I found Bloodrock 2 in her bedroom. Now back in the day, bands like Bloodrock along with their label- and touring-mates Grand Funk Railroad were pretty much reviled by the highbrow music critics. Music by these bands was considered to be heavy music-lite, manufactured for a teenaged audience much like Hannah Montana [...]

Grand Funk Railroad: We're An American Band [ purchase ] Up all night with Freddie King I got to tell you, poker's his thing Booze and ladies, keep me right As long as we can make it to the show tonight We're an American band... Bluesman Freddie King died in the mid seventies, but his stirring combination of open-string Texas blues and the "raw, screaming tones" of West Side Chicago blues lives on in the work of bluesmen from [...]

I'm sure to catch hell from The Giant Panther with this post, but I can't do a Guilty Pleasures feature without embarrassing someone (ultimately me) right? One of the funniest things I've seen on The Simpsons (a show I still love to this day) was a scene from an ancient episode called Homerpalooza where Homer is playing the car radio while shuttling some neighborhood kids around and they balk at his music, particularly Grand Funk's "American Band." Homer is indignant and shocked, essentially saying what about the "wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner?, the bong rattling base of Mel Schacher?, [...]
