Two of our favorite local bands just released some impressive music this week. First up, our friends in Grand Lake give us an almost Grizzly Bear-ish / chamber-pop version of Radiohead's The Tourist . The track is attached to their latest EP entitled Leaves Ellipse . It goes without saying that we love bands on our own label . It's one of those things: you don't tend to sign someone to release their records unless you really, really, love their records. Grand Lake won't be fooling anyone with Blood Sea Dream . This is an album clearly "of its time", built from the era's most obvious references. There's also absolutely nothing wrong with that. Grand Lake's website is pretty artsy. There's some elaborate, flowery language about the band's sound, and a picture of a horse wearing a dress shirt (refer to album art). There's also a lot of talk about how labels shouldn't matter in music, and how they don't apply to Grand Lake. So what if a band sounds a little bit like some other band? [...]
Oakland-based art band Grand Lake , reportedly named for the Oakland movie theater by Lake Merritt and led by former Port O'Brien member Caleb Nichols, recently sessioned with Echolocale for these two gems.
