As we may have mentioned a couple of times, today is our 3rd Birthday. This means two things; cake, and a great excuse to ask favours of our favourite people. We don't need to tell you anything about 4AD , because if you're here then you already know. Probably the finest label on the planet, everything they put out isn't just good, it's life-changingly brilliant. Which sounds like a rather hyperbolic statement to make, but I could genuinely plot the most important years of my life via their back catalogue. So, rather sheepishly, we asked them for [...]
Joe writes: For years I've been racking my brains trying to remember which American indie record from the '90s inspired MGMT so much. Of course it was this.
Jason Lytle and Jenny O. showed their musical craftsmanship to an allured audience at Brick & Mortar.

I was waiting to see if the world ended, before I posted this - thought it could save me some time - but here we still sit. It's Christmas morning, everyone's already done a list of some sort and I was hoping the list-y dust would settle before I posted mine. Happy Yule to y'all! The last half of this year for me sucked donkeys for a variety of intense, life-changing personal reasons. Admittedly, my output on BSR took a bit of a hit while I was struggling with real life. But in 2012 music was here, there [...]

You know, I've never fully understood why people go to a venue like Massey Hall only to stand throughout the show. There are seats. These seats are relatively comfortable. The sightlines are good while sitting. So why stand? I guess it's just people in the rock show mentality. Not too big of a deal, but I imagine someone who went to the effort of securing a front row centre seat would be a bit miffed at an the influx of people who seemed to magically appear in front of the stage just as Band Of Horses began their [...]
You Take It Too Bad . [...]

Last weekend saw me emerge blinking and pale from my Northside box-room to take a train down to Waterford to visit my good friend Frank, a man so filled with curiosity and enthusiasm that being around him is like taking good medicine. We took the car to Kilkenny and walked a forest trail along the river Nore. What a tonic. We picked mushrooms, climbed mouldy tree trunks and even ended up chatting to a pair of nine-year-old boys for the twenty seconds it took for us to realise how incredibly ropey it was for two thirty-one-year-old men to do this [...]

For someone who kind of hates touring and would rather be hanging out in the woods than playing shows, Jason Lytle has already had a pretty busy year. Hot on the heels of finishing up a successful string of tour dates with the classic Grandaddy lineup earlier this summer, Lytle just released Dept. Of Disappearance - his second proper solo album. His truncated tour in support of the album kicks off tonight. I had the chance to sit down with him in NYC and talk about the making of his new record and how radically his [...]

The erstwhile, though now recently reunited, Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle releases his new solo album Dept. Of Disappearance on Anti- today. It has been picking up some excellent reviews and we are expecting more of his brilliantly forlorn and mournful tales wrapped up in warm landscapes of sound. To mark the event, there is a free sampler available from Noisetrade containing three tracks from the album as well as an alternate version of Hangtown and two tracks from his outstanding 2009 release Yours Truly, The Commuter . [...]

The email came to me on July 30, from Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle. Pitchfork had run a piece “breaking” the news about Lytle’s new solo album Dept of Disappearance, even though I’d run something on it months earlier – and I sent my virtual buddy a note with a jokey comment that we should continue stickin’ it to the Man…. annnnd while we’re at it, why doesn’t he send his new album to a lone blogger with no staff or advertising so she can get the jump way before it comes out on October 16? [...]

Jason Lytle , better known as one-fifth of influential Californian band Grandaddy, succeeds once again in taking us to a happy place with 'Get Up and Go': A reassuring hug of a track from his upcoming solo album, Dept. of Disappearance , due to be released on October 16th via Anti Records. At a leisurely tempo, with sprightly keyboards lines and backed with the insistent mantra of: "everything's gonna be all right," 'Get Up and Go' is the perfect antidote to the mid-week blues and is a positive indication that the forthcoming release will satisfy fans of previous solo [...]

Pukkelpop Day 2 starts slowly with aching muscles from Day 1 , and even more intense heat. The fireball in the sky is cranked to frazzle, and so begins another day of sweating profusely at one of Europe's best rock festivals. And speaking of rock, I run into this guy, first thing. It's BOOTS ELECTRIC! Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal, a man I haven't seen since he appeared in this video for me , at which point he also gave me my own EODM nickname "Sexy Cherry." So here we are, a few years later outside [...]
I think I might be treading close to "Swan Fungus Did It!" territory here, because I can't remember if I've ever written about the worst opening bands I've ever seen. I know for a fact that i wrote about my favorite opening bands, and I know I've written about terrible experiences at concerts. Those were [...]

Last weekend’s Electric Picnic was an embarrassment of riches and State’s photographers worked above and beyond the call of duty to cover a vast amount of acts. In a collection of previously unpublished photos we’d like to re-live the weekend for you in one extensive gallery with notable appearances from The Roots, Alabama Shakes, Grandaddy, Delorentos, SBTRKT, Villagers and Lianne La Havas amongst the many others here. More than anything these images will help you re-live two of the most insane gigs of the weekend, both home-grown. If you weren’t there you’ll have a good idea what you [...]
Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle is reuniting his old psych-pop band , but he's also gearing up to release his new solo album Dept. Of Disappearance . We've already heard the title track , and now Lytle has released his video for the album track "Your Final Setting Sun." It follows the story of a psychedelic cult leader who's making things up as he goes along, and of a little kid who figures out that he's full of shit. Mike Aho directs; watch it below. Read More...
