to start, i'll pick up where i kind of left off. here we have weezer playing a song with the fantastic ms. petra haden (of that dog. and the rentals), called "i just threw out the love of my dreams" . i believe this song can be found on the good life EP, but i don't know if it's still in print or not. for the most part, ms. haden takes the vocal helm, but towards the end, you can hear rivers a bit. again, a perfect example of that big muff sound. gotta love it. It hasnt been long since we said goodbye to Grandaddy and the great tunes those guys layed on us over the years, and Ive been searching for a proper replacement when I need a good technolgy love story gone bad. Well, what ive found certainly is not the second coming of Jason Lytle, but Foundry Field Recordings do tip their respective caps to the boys from Modesto in their sound. Though they will probably hate me for the Grandaddy mention, theyve heard it before. Foundry hails from Columbia, Missouri and with the exception of Someone [...]
For nearly 15 years residents of Androscoggi n County in Maine have lived in fear of a mysterious creature that lurks in the night. An evil beast with glow-in-the-dark eyes and the most terrible stench you have ever smelled.  On Saturday this ravenous mutant, who in recent years has been tied to the death of a Doberman pinscher and a Rottweiler, was ran straight over by a car in an attempt to chase down a cat. Here are the pictures.  http://www. fox news.com/story/0,2933,208683,0 0.html [...]

wow last night i put on socks for the first time in three weeks. What an odd feeling. And right now it's raining. Are the dessert months over? The picture above, part of Ms K's Polaroid Project , is me in India on the beach. With a cow. Yes, a cow. There were hurds of holy and wild cows walking around. Babies, mothers and the hurd leader. Sometimes they'd even run and hit the water. Indian reality was quite different from what I'm used to on two other continents. Last friday's Undisputed Heavyweights [...]

This is a repost of an Interview I did with Jason late last year. Now that Grandaddy has called it quits, kinda fun to look back. Since forming in 1992 in Modesto, California, Grandaddy has released some of the more interesting, sad, and beautiful albums in the indie genre. Under the Western Freeway and The Sophtware Slump are two of my favorite albums from any band in recent memory and the most recent stuff is equally impressive. Stirring together a strange concoction of nature and technology, Jason Lytle and the boys always [...]
So apart from a reasonably heavy Friday that included The Dirty Skirts and The Hellphones (reviews to follow), the last few days have been mellow and meteorologically unpredictable, perfect for reflection on a band that has endlessly ploughed the lonely furrow between depressive introspection and boundless enthusiasm. To me, Grandaddy were ...

I heart the McCarren Pool Party! Despite it being insanely hot and the sets being about half an hour late, I still managed to have a lot of fun- though it wasn't without spurts of boredom waiting around. The first band up was the Bon Savants. We hung around for a bit while they played, but eventually moved off to the sides for a walk around. The group was ok, but the music didn't stand out at all. They sounded a bit like everyone else. I'm [...]
This week I'm leaving for Chicago, but that doesn't mean that my friends here in New York will be without some great tunes all week long. It's actually a really good week in New York for live music so each of these picks has been made while opting over some other great performer. Make sure you check out the other places you check for live music this week so you don't miss out. Anyway, here's my picks for the week!!! Monday: I'm torn, on one hand you can see the African sensation that is Konono No. 1 at [...]

As much as I am excited to go to university this upcoming September, I am very scared. I am very scared, not very much because I would have to hack a lot more nor might fail. I am scared because I would have to eat dinner alone as I walk into my room. The room I will be living in will be loveless. I saw the dome building, a red brick building that looks so ugly and hideous. What if I have to eat cold meals? I will miss my family then. I will miss my old friends. I will [...]
Well, 2006 is halfway over, but it has been an exceptionally strong year for quality releases. The 3rd Base Line presents to you its top six selections of the year...so far. Nothing too obscure. Truth is that some good ol' standbyes have recorded and released some of their best work this very year. So feel free to agree, disagree, or whatever you like. You can even post your own list in the comments if you so care to. 1. Neil Young - Living With War This [...]
The latest Grandaddy video, a nice little animated feature for "Elevate Myself." The Rawking Refuses To Stop! has some Grandaddy buttons and posters and you - yes, you! - can be one of three lucky winners to get 'em for yourself. The rules are simple: write a hiaku about Grandaddy, the more ridiculous the better, and e-mail it to me. The contest will run for three weeks and then I'll post my favorites. Good luck! Grandaddy - "Jeez Louise": mp3 Grandaddy - "Where I'm Anymore": mp3 If you haven't checked out [...]

Well, there are some really great half year recaps already floating around the web. Thought Id give my take on the first half of 2006 myself. Here are the albums Ive been most impressed with so far this year in no order. Band of Horses - Everything All the Time These guys deserve the hype, the Sub Pop deal and the live show praise they have been getting. Some former [...]

Welcome to part 2 of 3 of the halfway-through-2006 songs of the year sessions, in which we encounter an aging punk band, a Coldplay rip-off, and a sultry Texan chanteuse. Mission of Burma - "2wice": mp3 You don't get to be a rock band forever. Most old codgers have long since given into decripitude and easy chairs, but not Mission of Burma. The horrible truth about Burma is that they still rock harder than than a slab of two-ton granite. "2wice" isn't the heaviest song on The Obliterati , but it's [...]

Play it: Grandaddy Just Like the Fambly Cat Play it: Best of Grandaddy + Odds and Ends All my friends are home indoors, reading about me, feeling sorry for the guy who tried - "Guide Down Denied" Grandaddy As I posted awhile back , Grandaddy has called it quits, and their final release, Just Like the Fambly Cat , finally [...]
Ok, so if you cant tell by now Im a sucker for Grandaddy and Jason Lytle. Check out this video from his appearance at New York record store Other Music recently. Technorati Tags: Grandaddy , Jason Lytle , Other Music

I've never been a huge music video guy. This was before I realized indie bands do, in fact, make videos. Double Agent Records has an awesome acoustic performance of "Irene" by Rose Melberg here on their site . It's interesting to see a song that relies on the rhythmic clarity of the piano translated to an acoustic guitar - also, if you pay close attention you can figure out the chords if you haven't done it by ear. All major 7ths, which is probably why it's my song of the year. [...]

After his set Saturday night at York Street, Jason stuck around the lovely city of Cincinnati and did a Lounge Session at our favorite internet radio station, WOXY. You can download the set along with an interview below. He talks a little about the Grandaddy breakup and the show and his future.
