It always appeared somewhat conflicting that a placid man who lived and worked according to a crushing sense of realism personally could resemble such a stellar space cadet artistically. Jason Lytle disbanded Grandaddy back in '06 and although crippled by your usual slew of addictions – as well as his notorious antisociability, it was the band's inability to generate a respectable income that led to their eventual demise. Expressed as the most candid of confessions, it can only truly be matched in recent memory by the cynical, money-spun cackles of Black Francis when the Pixies first reconvened in [...]

A selection of photos from Friday at Electric Picnic 2012 by Debbie Hickey [...]

As anyone keeping an eye on my Twitter feed would have noticed, last Thursday ended up being a bit of a Scottish indie pilgrimage to the ABC in Glasgow. The reason: FUCKING GRANDADDY! Funnily enough, for all my rather silly fanboyism, I'm not sure exactly how or when Grandaddy managed to achieve the legendary status they seem to have with my peers. Or indeed myself. To the best of my knowledge they really only have three well-known albums - Under the Western Freeway , The Sophtware Slump and Sumday - but even the [...]

Yes, mosherama! This podcast draws its name, slightly sadly, not from the fact that I have been in one insane moshpit after another this week, which might have been quite cool, but from the rather more mundane circumstance that I have simply been to quite a lot of gigs. I did mosh, in a sense. In the fat, sad old man sense that I stood sort of in the middle and nodded my head vaguely in time to the music. I know, I know, who will save society from such excess? This must be a job for Carol [...]
Flanders is more than a field, it’s also home to about a bazillion festivals. Putting last year’s tragedy in the rearview, Pukkelpop – dubbed the European Coachella by DJ Martin Solveig and held August 16-18th in Kiewit, Belgium – was this year a celebration of great music. So how does one girl plan her attack of 14-hour days, eight stages, 200+ bands and DJs, in 97°F heat? With good shoes, bottles of water, and a long lens. The first day saw Paris’ drum n’ bass assassins Dirtyphonics nail the Dance Hall and its inhabitants [...]

Jason Lytle dishes the surprising news during radio interview.

More than five years after their uneasy parting of the ways, Grandaddy has returned to the stage, and on Monday night at the Fonda Theatre it felt like a triumph — even if the man who closed up shop, songwriter Jason Lytle, sounded a bit tentative about the whole process. "So this getting back together and playing again thingie ..." Lytle said good-naturedly four songs into the Modesto-bred quintet's 75-minute performance. "I don't know ... I had my reservations, but it's been fun." ||| Photos by Laurie Scavo [...]
White Star Liners have announced that they will be supporting Grandaddy on 29th August at HMV Ritz in Manchester and on 30th August at O2 ABC in Glasgow as part of their UK tour. These support slots follow on from Jason Lytle from Grandaddy adding guest vocals to the forthcoming White Star Liners album, The Years That Slid , which will be released through Numbskull HQ / Total Creative Freedom and Proper Records on Monday 29th [...]
After six years, California-bred indie outfit Grandaddy played its last of a handful of California gigs this past Monday at The Fonda Theatre. Days after a slot at San Francisco's Outside Lands Festival, Jason Lytle and his quartet managed, rather effortlessly I might add, to string together a just long-enough reunion set of their revered 2000s catalog of material from albums The Sophtware Slump and Sumday . A favorite moment came after a just lovely rendition of hit "A.M. 1803 commenced and Lytle, forever quirky with his music-industry-ness, claimed, "After that song, I was finally able to [...]

Still no East Coast solo or Grandaddy dates.

One of may favorite bands from the 902s and early 20002s days of yore is Grandaddy . I consider The Sophtware Slump to be a masterpiece with its futuristic space-pop, bleepy, bloopy and utterly beautiful vibe. After a 6 year hiatus, Jason Lytle and the band have reformed for a small tour around California and Europe . As is usually the case, there is no Phoenix date scheduled, so I must live vicariously through the magic of the interwebs. This past Sunday, the band followed up their festival [...]

Check out my photos of Grandaddy at the Independent over at Stereogum .
Even though Jason Lytle has a new solo album , he managed to work in some reunion dates with much loved Grandaddy. Their triumphant David Cross approved set at Outside Lands rightfully necessitated a late night after show on Sunday at the Independent. Caveman provided support with their shimmery guitars and synthesizer washes. Check out the photos above.

In all my years as a festie, I've never been to a festival where gloves seemed like a perfectly sound idea. But San Francisco defies the logic of California (as comedian Marcus Monroe put it, "It's summer, so tell your fucking city that"), with cool days and downright cold evenings. Still, the City by the Bay plays one hell of a host. Coming from Boston, the honest politeness of the people here was shockingly apparent from the moment I stepped onto the BART. With sunny skies above, it was a warm welcome to the weekend ahead. Of course, [...]
Stereogum Over the weekend, thousands of fans flocked to this year's Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park. Overcast and chilly weather was offset by the fire from the Metallica pyrotechnics and warm vibes from festival attendees. Neil Young & Crazy Horse turned up their guitars to close out Friday, Metallica blew everyone away with their hellfire on Saturday, and Stevie Wonder dazzled with his barrage of hits to on Sunday. Some of the other highlights included Jack White's impromptu set in the midst of the trees, [...]

Way too much for a Monday: ► The Kills come back around behind last year's album "Blood Pressures," but the duo of Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince have another kind of release on the way too — a hardcover photo book titled "Dream and Drive" by band documentarian Kenneth Cappello, who culled the selections from more than 20,000 images of Mosshart and Hince. Tonight the Kills play to a sold-out Mayan Theatre. [Check out our review and gallery from last spring's show at the Fonda .] ► Grandaddy reunites to [...]
Incoming: Sunset Strip Music Festival, Rock the Bells, Grandaddy, the Kills, Alabama Shakes, Michael Kiwanuka, Dead Can Dance, Regina Spektor, Peter Murphy, Neil Diamond, Amadou & Miriam, HoneyHoney, the Henry Clay People, Zola Jesus, Fun., Filter and more. Above: Peter Murphy , the 55-year-old "Godfather of Goth," recently told the Sunset Strip Music Festival blog that he not only wants to continue making music but he wants to be a success actor. Can you tell from his music video for "Seesaw Sway?" Murphy's latest solo album "Ninth" came [...]
