Or rather, great songs from good albums that came out this year. Or great songs that weren't on an album at all. Or great songs that were on albums that I never got round to listening to. Oh, just great songs, alright? (Some of my favorite songs are actually on favorite albums, so see here for them.) Old Stalwarts Bill Callahan - Jim Cain "I used to be darker, then I got lighter, then I got dark again" Bill wraps [...]

With everyone probably counting down the minutes till the long weekend which will either include opening some Christmas presents or chowing down on some Chinese food followed by at least one movie this weekend, we wanted to wish everyone Happy Holidays from all of us here at Hidden Track. To keep everyone in the holiday spirit I've pulled together a batch of Christmas related links that would even get Santa to bring something to this Jew on Christmas, enjoy... List Time: Best Hip Hop [...]

I need to preface this post with four simple words. I HATE CHRISTMAS MUSIC Why do I hate it? Well, in recent years it has just become a platform for crappy pop stars to keep re-covering the same christmas songs over and over. I don't need to hear Carrie Underwood sing White Christmas, or Wynonna singing Silent Night, or any big shot artist covering a christmas classic to get me into the spirit. I think I should stop being such a grinch, and just let the [...]

Before you break out into a cold sweat about having to sit through another list of the best albums of the decade, don't worry, this is not one of those. Although most of these songs would be there or thereabouts if I were actually compiling a favourite songs of the decade list, that's not why they're here. Basically, rather than try and rank anything against anything else, all this is is a meander through the last ten years and me chattering about how my relationship with music has changed and what sort of stuff I was into at [...]

Former Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle took to his piano to record a set of Christmas tunes, currently available on his website . The holiday album, titled Merry X-Mas 2009 , is comprised of seven piano-based, improvised songs. Lytle explained to NME : "I set up some microphones and recorded about 35 minutes of improvisational piano music. It just so happens that playing my piano at home is one of my favorite things to do (in terms of music) so it was nice to be able to capture some of these moments of me playing aimlessly [...]
Jason Lytle (Grandaddy) has released a new Christmas album, and you can download it for FREE here ! (via Drowned In Sound )

Holiday shopping making you a little light in the wallet? Not feeling like you can justify the expenditure on new music? Fear not! Remember Jason Lytle ? As those of us who went to college in the first half of this nearly bygone decade will recall, Lytle was the frontman of the fantastic (but all too short-lived) Grandaddy . Do you kids remember The Sophtware Slump ??? Well, sonny, in my day... Anyway, that was then and this is now. Lytle is now a solo act (he released a the debut full-length Yours Truly, [...]

All Smiles — the nom de tune of songwriter-guitarist Jim Fairchild — this week released a new EP, "Fall Never Fell," the follow-up to his sophomore album "Oh For the Getting and Not Letting Go" (which is also finally seeing physical release). Fairchild, the former Grandaddy guitarist who is now touring axeman in Modest Mouse, again collaborated with Solon Bixler ( Great Northern ), Nik Freitas (Mystic Valley Band) and Joe Plummer ( Modest Mouse ) on the new songs. In addition to the new EP, he's releasing a free download of "The Comparison Blouse," [...]

As we progress down our path of the loveliest music of the decade, we'll give you a bit more detail on the records we've chosen. While we were infatuated with numbers 31-40 (which you can read here), we're ready to go to battle over every selection from 1 to 30. Not a bad song on any of these albums, if you ask us. You can listen to the entire album of each of these by registering with Lala.com.... but you knew that, right? While we don't claim this to be a defining document of merit, we [...]
To be honest, I am not a music journalist; I am not even a writer. What I am is a teacher who loves music and has been lucky enough to talk to musicians sometimes. Like today, I had the opportunity to talk to one of my favorite musicians, Jason Lytle . Remember Grandaddy ? I sure as hell do! They were on heavy rotation during many road trips driving through these great states. Grandaddy has a sound that has always reminded me of a kid in a classroom, gazing out the window, wanting [...]

This week's disaster theme came from a conversation I had with Blueback Birthday Boy Dylan last night, but for the life of me I can't remember how we got onto the subject of total cock-ups. I was DJing though, so maybe that had something to do with it. Actually, I know I've had an uneasy relationship with DJing in the past, but last night's effort was brilliant fun. It's all rather dependent on the occasion with me - too much of a dancefloor and it doesn't suit the general miserablism I'm into, whereas if it's supposed to be [...]
