For the second of our 'guest' top ten posts we are pleased to welcome the finger-choppin' Banner to the roster with his first contribution to the end of year best of lists. " It's been a great year musically and especially as this year I became a dad. I'd like to thank Doctor Roddy and Chris T Popper for their steady supply of CDs this year and especially for little Max's mega mix from which I've selected some of my top ten tunes. I would like to have written a bit more about the songs but unfortunately I [...]
MAD MACKEREL'S TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS For our first ever Festive Feature on Mad Mackerel, we asked twelve of our favourite bands and artists of 2011 to answer twelve questions and we will publish them over the next twelve days taking us up to Christmas Eve. Grass House first appeared on our radar in 2010 with the brooding, lyrically sharp Cockroach from their debut EP Plough More Sky . Since then we've [...]
In this edition: Indie labels rule the day today as Dad Rocks! has a great sophomore effort on Mount Modern , and we get to know the Sunderbans. As always, we have your weekly considerations and a mountain of new videos. Dad Rocks! - Mount Modern Dad Rocks! seems like a natural shoe-in for our house musician here at The Dadada. Last year's Digital Age was one of the best EPs (and debuts) of [...]
Last December, we featured the Ant Giant Ant EP from Grass House . They're back with three new singles on Bandcamp . The mock-rocker, A Cradle, A Short Breath was released in June. Last month, the UK outfit released Faun b/w The Breeze . Needless to say, Grass House keeps it delightfully morose, and draws comparisons to Wall -era Pink Floyd and folktronica stalwarts, Tunng. All three tracks are available on Bandcamp , where you can pay what you want for them. [...]
Grass House were one of our favourite new discoveries of 2010, their combination of brooding indie rock with folk tinged gothic undertones created a sound that was both instantly recognisable and pleasingly original. Their brilliant double-A side single Faun b/w The Breeze is released on 17th October on Holiday Club Recordings . The release is the band's third single, following Lazy Bones in late 2010 and, earlier this year, the excellent A Cradle, A Short Breath . The A-side evokes the dusty desert rumble of Johnny [...]
...was wonderful. Thank you to everyone who came and filled our once a month home at the Old Queens Head. Here are a few photos taken on an iPhone so apologies for the quality. If you happen to have any better photos (and it's likely...) then give us a shout and we'll upload. For now here's some low quality fun. There's also a super nice video of Lianne and Marques playing together which I'll upload soon. Grass House at Oh! Inverted World [...]
Happy Monday folks! So this Thursday, Oh! Inverted World has yet again invited another selection of awesome new acts to play our showcase at London's Old Queens Head, and what a line-up it is... Opening preceedings will be the brilliant Grass House . The 4-piece first grabbed our attention with their ace new single "A Cradle A Short Breath". Have a listen to the track below, and then go buy the postcard version of it for the bargain price of a pound HERE . You can [...]
Situated just north of the Midlands, Sheffield has produced some fine musicians over the years. The likes of Pulp , Arctic Monkeys and Def Leppard have heralded from the area, so it only seems fitting that here, in the middle of the summer, a mass grouping of hundreds of artists should come together for the largest free music festival in Europe, Tramlines (held this year on 22-24 July). With a hugely diverse billing, you don't have to have an eclectic or particularly well educated knowledge of music to find [...]
From London act Grass House 's forthcoming third EP, this manly number is just what's required on a sundrunk Sunday evening: it's peaceful, prosaic and pretty. The genre is hard to identify, but I want to call it almost a lounge-bar rock; there's something blurry and dim-lights about the production, and I wouldn't mind listening with a whiskey-on-the-rocks, tapping the glass as I sleepily let the song sweep me along to wherever it is we're going. [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]
On June 27th, the excellent Grass House will release A Cradle, A Short Breath as a follow-up to last November's single Lazy Bones . In a conscious effort to avoid being type-cast in a dark or brooding vein, the song hints at the lighter side of the London group's repertoire. Even so, it is still menacing enough to send most other indie bands screaming to their mummies. The single precedes a third EP which is pencilled in for later this year and marks the start of a busy summer, with the [...]
One of the advantages of having a blog like this is being able to make up the rules as you go along, and today that means giving the limelight to our youngest Joe, who reaches the ripe old age of seven today. Now, we are all guilty of bias and of nepotism at times (and this is one of them), but I think you'd be hard pressed to find another seven year old with music tastes as good as his. From age five he chose to go to sleep to the soothing strains of Mclusky loudly singing along, [...]
Now that we've had the top tens from all the Mad Mackerel contributors, we will give you a definitive overall top ten in a couple of days. Before that is our penultimate top ten list of the year - the favourite new bands and artists that have come our way in 2010 which was perhaps the hardest list of all to compile. So with honourable mentions to Gaoler's Daughter , White Noise Movement, Pop. 1280 and White Dress , here we have our favourites. Hopefully we'll see a lot more of them all in [...]
- Grass House is dark and delicious. There is something sardonic about this quartet from London who revel in despair and frustration. Fans of early Peter Gabriel, Nick Cave, and Tunng will love the EP, Ant Giant Ant . It's freely available until December 13, so grab it NOW ! After that date, you can download it from Itunes. A vinyl edition of Ant Giant Ant will be released in the UK on December 17. - Check out: [...]
We gave you Grass House's new single recently and they have followed this up with a new EP titled Ant Giant Ant . It is out on Holiday Club Recordings and for a limited time you can get the whole thing digitally for free here or can buy lovely 103 vinyl here . The previously featured single Lazy Bones is on it, together with three more songs. We have Try Mind Can Walk 'n' Wall Can Stay for you and it is another cracking track from one of the best up [...]
It's not going to surprise anyone at all that I am being an absolute slob today, is it? Mrs. Toad got back from Australia around lunchtime, and after a few hours of pottering about she crashed out with jetlag, so I snuck off to record the podcast. I am sure that soon enough she will wake and start demanding attention and general servitude soon enough, so I better get this over with quickly. After that I am going straight back to bed to watch stupid films while my sweetheart dozes by my side, awaking occasionally to tell me [...]

Audiovisuals: Grass House - A Cradle, A Short Breath
Grass House - A Cradle, A Short Breath from Bullion on Vimeo . Up above is the video for the new Grass House single, out next week. The band say themselves that 'A Cradle, A Short Breath' was written in a 'conscious effort' to lighten up a bit. Their first two EPs were very serious affairs, sure, but thankfully the one thing that hasn't changed is the quality of their output. The clip is typically imaginative and shows that, regardless of what tone their material has, the band are going from strength to strength. [...]
