So the waiting is over, and here are the first twenty entries in our Top 100 of 2012, part of MM's much expanded Best of the Year review. Over the next five days we will reveal our favourite songs and those of our contributors: Mrs Mackerel, Christy Popper, Barry-Sean, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket, Middle Sprat, Starbie, and Toy Steve. These are not the most "popular" songs of the year, nor do they lay any subjective claim to being the "best", but they are without doubt the favourites of all those who have written for MM one way or another this [...]

No sooner had we posted the excellent Nassau from Grassfight's new release Icon, EP 2 , then they offer up another track from it for free. This is Look Homeward, Heathen and has more of the urgent, wall of sound feel that we liked so much about Nassau . We're loving Nassau by New York trio Grassfight , taken from new release Icon EP 2, which was officially released yesterday . With shades of Interpol in the hypnotic, propulsive percussion, echoes of Dinosaur Jr in the swirling guitar, and a classic indie deep, monotone vocal, the track successfully ticks all the necessary boxes for a post-punk extravaganza without slipping into pastiche or becoming derivative - no mean feat. Nassau is delightfully terse, taut with tension, and displays a simmering resentment - [...]

It's time to check out a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. These are just a few of the songs that would get their own individual posts here on GIMME TINNITUS if I only had the time. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. Listen. Downloadables: Hate Your Teachers (mp3) by Unnatural Helpers Violence Now (mp3) by Milk Music DILLONAERO (mp3) by DOPE BODY [...]
New York trio Grassfight get a lot of nods for their kinship to Nick Cave , having solely to do with the vocals present in their music. But, as the release of their new Icon EP 2 comes this week, I'm more focused on the music they're creating. The work on the high-hat is solid, and the cascading guitars that continuously assault your ears are precisely what I want an indie rock band to sound like nowadays. There's not a lot of frills, no added nuance, just straightforward [...]
With sounds that remind us of Interpol, The Strokes, and Joy Division, New York trio Grassfight has mined the best of rock’s recent past.

Perfectamente bailable y disfrutable. Some eight months ago, Grassfight was another new indie band emerging onto the cluttered scene of a broad 'post-punk' heritage. Offering a certainly promising debut with "Icon, an EP", the currently NYC based trio was still facing a tough fight ahead: to break through the endless cast of half-hearted shoegazers and other Joy Division-bred acts around. Mission accomplished? Yes, sir. As we welcome the first single off their upcoming EP "Icon N.2", time to give credit where credit due. Effective for one, "Look Homeward, Heathen" blends the ominousness of New Wave revivers like Interpol with the [...]

NYC by way of Denton, TX trio Grassfight plays a flavour post-punk that's sure to have all the cool kids...well, cowering in the corner while their darkwave overlords promenade on the dancefloor. Dark and crackling with energy, their sound recalls a really pissed of Interpol, and yes, that's a good thing. The fact that they may be Thomas Wolfe fans just makes the cocktail all that more tantlizing. The band's newest, Icon, an EP , drops next week, and MOKB is more than happy to premiere single, Look [...]

"All We Do Is Count" is new from NYC rock and roll band Grassfight. The track goes lo-fi well enough but mantains enough of a tune (both vocally and instrumentally) to keep you interested long after you're first like "WOW, I really do love this low-fi shit." Don't sleep, "AWDIC" is one of the best rock tracks we've heard in a minute. Spin it after the jump below and check out the band's "Icon" EP on Soundcloud . The evolution of New York-based indie-rockers Grassfight has definitely been one of many stages (and mutations as it were). And 3 seems to be the magic number. It's been 3 years since their last release, and they've gone through 3 band members in just as many years. Not to mention the fact [...]
It's been a while since we'd heard anything on Denton's Grassfight. A little over two years, even--since back when Dave Sims wrote this glowing piece on the then-new-to-the-scene outfit. And t... The Internet thinks your Interstate 35E sucks. Constant rain and two major wrecks in the 45-mile stretch of highway between Dallas and Denton made the drive an absolutely miserable mess. I was feeling... Continue reading "Yesterday at NX35: The Sun'll Come Out, Tomorrowpeople" >

Grassfight. Not fighting grass, oddly enough. (Justin Tennison) Dave Sims, scribe of our weekly Denton-focused column "North of the Dial," checks in with promising Denton-bred four-piece Grassfight in this week's installment, discussing both Radiohead and the insularity of the Denton scene with vocalist Nathan Forester. Unfortunately, the band's not on the books to play anywhere around the region any time soon--or, rather, not until July 10 when Grassfight takes to the Lola's Saloon stage in Fort Worth. So, in case you were curious... Bonus mp3: Grassfight [...]
