I've had the pleasure of drinking a few beers down in Texas with Daniel Chamberlin, the editor of the now defunct Arthur Magazine . If you've been to this rag in the past, you know that CS is a fan of the Grateful Dead , and after getting on the topic the other night at a bar in Marfa (where Chamberlin now resides), he pointed me in the direction of an article he wrote in May of 2009 called "Uncle Skullfucker's Band." In it, he explains the "discreet charm of [...]
It's not the newest trend in the webiverse. See, for example, Hangin' Out On E Street , the Bruce Springsteen-solicited covers project we noted way back in February of 2009, or The Stand Ins project , which had Bon Iver, The New Pornographers, David Vandervelde, and other indie names taking on the tracks from Okkervil River album The Stand Ins as it was released in 2008. But the songwriter-specific video covers project concept seems to be peaking, with several major collections in process as we speak. Today, we present our [...]

Chuck Berry, still rockin' at age 85. Long past the half-century mark, rock and roll is now nearing senior citizen status. Yesterday we marked the 53rd anniversary of the deaths of Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens, and we've had some tragic losses in the past couple weeks (Etta James, Johnny Otis, etc.). But one of our greatest original rockers is still with us - Chuck Berry, still rockin' (sometimes) at age 85. He has some health issues, but he apparently still performs at the Blueberry Hill restaurant in St. Louis, where [...]

Shortly after Sasquatch! organizers announced the 2012 lineup , which has Jack White at the top of the bill, Jack's publicist put out a press release that mentions the new solo artist will also headline the 2012 Hangout Music Fest ahead of the official announcement...oops. Rather than pretend the news hadn't leaked, the festival's Twitter feed came alive with word that White will indeed headline Hangout and that the rest of the initial lineup will be announced on Tuesday. Here's six other stories of note as we [...]

Bring up the date July 28, 1973 and there is a certain percentage of music fans that will immediately know its significance, as it saw three of the most iconic and influential bands of all-time - the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and The Band - all performed at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Raceway for Summer Jam '73. While there's been plenty written about this historic concert, which reportedly drew a larger crowd than Woodstock, we've got a pretty cool homemade video to share with you today from a group of friends that documented their journey to the fest [...]

TweetDon't need many words to describe how awesome this is. RIP Etta.

Another Outdoor Retailer show, another long weekend of puffy coats and new friends. And another long flight home with music blaring on the iPhone as I curse the heavens for my inability to sleep on airplanes. It's been a while since there was any Grateful Dead in these parts . Mostly because it creeps up in the sunshine, but after a few straight days of 3.2% beer consumption that lasted from 4pm - midnight-ish, summer needed to come early. And Harpur College? May 2nd? 1970? Dick's Picks Volume 8? [...]

The Grateful Dead has announced the "Dead Covers Project" contest. From the band's website: "Think you have what it takes to do the Grateful Dead? Show off your musical chops and you just might get your music video featured on Dead.net as part of The Dead Covers Project! The rules are simple - all video submissions must contain a song either written by or recorded by the Dead. How that song is interpreted, however, is entirely up to you! Upload your video to YouTube, tag it "DeadCoversProject," then we'll make it available to [...]
The band is interested in spotlighting fans' versions of its songs.

Roughly two and a half years ago we reported that Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt), Jim James (MMJ) and Will Johnson (Centro-matic) had headed into the studio to a record a new batch of songs inspired by Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics, a la Billy Bragg and Wilco's amazing Mermaid Avenue records. According to Paste , the trio were personally invited by Guthrie's granddaughter, Nora, to sift through the songwriter's notebooks and scratch pads to gain insight on the artist and his unfinished work. On February 28, the trio will [...]

In July 2010, director Amir Bar-Lev ( The Tillman Story ) announced that a biopic on iconic Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia was in the works . However, the film was almost immediately put on the back burner due to stalled negotiations with Garcia's estate . While that flick remains in developmental limbo, music documentary filmmaker Malcolm Leo ( This Is Elvis , The Beach Boys: An American Band ) and Garcia's personal manager John Hartmann have announced a forthcoming feature-length documentary on Garcia's life and times, as Deadline points out. Leo will direct the [...]
Filmmaker Malcolm Leo and personal manager John Hartmann have been given the green light to produce a feature-length documentary on Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia according to a report by Nikki Finke for Deadline Hollywood. Leo interview Jer' back in 1987 for three-hours and that conversation will be the basis for the film, which will also include "never-before-seen performances, documentary footage and rare home videos." A Less Serious Jerry Garcia Interview From 1987 Leo has a long history of making rock docs including 19812s This Is Elvis, [...]

The final release in the Dick's Picks series finds the Grateful Dead in fine form.

Excellent shows from August 1971, long-lost at sea The Grateful Dead were far ahead of their time in many respects, but none perhaps more so than the breadth, depth and quality of the tapes they archived (and as will be described below, occasionally lost) from their legendary live shows. The Dick's Picks series was named for and originally curated by the band's tape archivist, Dick Latvala. Following Latvala's passing in 1999, the series was continued by the band's current archivist David Lemieux. In contrast to the multi-track remixes released under the [...]

Grateful Dead : New Speedway Boogie [ purchase ] First of all, let me wish all of our readers a very happy new year. To start our "New" theme, I wanted to share a song by the Grateful Dead. So, I had to decide whether to post New Minglewood Blues, New, New Minglewood Blues, or All New Minglewood Blues. I could even have gone with an obscure version of the song that is not the Dead at all, called Even Newer Minglewood Blues. I decided to avoid the problem [...]
