Covers of all the songs from 'Surrealistic Pillow," the second and greatest album by the Jefferson Airplane.
Yesterday I was sitting in my office when a co-worker rounded the corner and tapped me on the shoulder. As I pulled my earbuds out of their receptacles he said, "Iron Maiden?!!" He knew I was listening to them (The Number of the Beast in particular), not because I had a CD jewel box sitting next to my computer but [...]

The Clash were easily the most commercially successful band to come out of the 19702s punk scene, with their potent brand of punk rock that mixed elements of ska, reggae, funk and rockabilly, all set to Joe Strummer's socio-political lyrics. On September 9, the iconic and influential punk act will release Sound System , a massive nine-disc box set that comes packaged in a vintage boom box designed by Clash bassist Paul Simonon. The set, which will feature remastered versions of the band's [...]

By Virginie Berger ( @virberg ), founder and general manager of the creative and development agency DBTH . To cut to the chase and get at the heart of the matter, the biggest apparent challenge that I can identify for direct-to-fan is that the music industry is broken and no one has yet discovered a practical model that will allow the typical independent, DIY musician to make money. But let's not forget either that artists without a label and who are well-surrounded, and know [...]

Our buddy Sunil was down at Jazz Fest and has shared a couple of videos we think you'll dig. Supergroup Dragon Smoke was one of many incredible bands to play last week's Fiya Fest. This group consists of Eric Lindell, Ivan Neville, Stanton Moore and Rob Mercurio. At their Fiya Fest set, Dragon Smoke was joined by a horn section that included Skerik. One of the songs the group performed at Fiya Fest was a cover of Landslide from Fleetwood Mac's eponymous 1975 album. [...]

Grateful Dead' s May 8th, 1977 concert at Barton Hall is something of legend for Deadheads, marking one of the earliest A+ quality bootleg recordings of the band. But there's plenty more from the Magical, Mythical Tour to explore. On June 11th, the band will compile recordings of five additional shows from the tour as part of a massive 14-disc box set. All five shows - St. Paul Civic Center Arena, St. Paul, MN (5/11); Auditorium Theatre, Chicago, IL (5/12, 5/13); St. Louis Arena, St. Louis MO (5/15); and Coliseum at the University Of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL (5/17) [...]

Over the weekend I reported on a new Grateful Dead box set that looks absolutely incredible. The "May '773 box set will contain every note of every show The Dead performed between May 11th and May 17th in that much-beloved year in Grateful Dead history - 1977. It's due on June 11. Today, the Grateful Dead have officially announced the release and have put the set up for pre-sale . With only 15,000 sets available, we believe GD archivist David Lemieux when he [...]

The threads that entwine early country music and American folk music are clear and bright in the folkways. Early country came from folk, coupled with other Southern strands that would lead to the blues; before the folk-revival canonization of radio and festival genres in the 50s and 60s, the folk community welcomed country artists as their own. But although it is common for modern folk musicians to pay tribute to the early blues and country songs of depression-era radio, to certain subgenres such as outlaw country, and to the crossover songs and songwriters of the [...]

With little fanfare -- at least here in America -- Kent, England-based It Hugs Back has been steadily building a formidable catalog of records and singles over the last several years. Its latest long-player, Recommended Record , is a lush, engaging and often aurally stunning marvel that gives the foursome a strong claim on a place in the vanguard of contemporary psych-pop. The set is roughly split into motorik groovers ("Sometimes") and gentle strummers that cushion persistently breathy vocals ("Teenage Drone"), although there are exciting moments that don't fit neatly into either pile, such as the blaring [...]
Welcome to the first installment of Dead Notes. There is a raw stigma that runs parallel with the mention of the Grateful Dead. Far too often the circus surrounding the band trumps the actual music, instead placing more emphasis on skeletons, dancing bears, hacky sacks and other vestiges of the 'parking lot' scene. Not to [...]

It’s time to celebrate spring by turning our attention to the music of the good old Grateful Dead , specifically the 1981 spring tour. Early '80s shows can be hit and hit, but when the band was on, it was really on, such as this complete first set from May 9th at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. It opens with a blistering Half Step > Franklin’s Tower > Stranger , and closes in similar form with a fantastic Looks Like Rain > China Cat [...]

We've been big fans of Bob Weir's fantastic Weir Here since it debuted last year. The semi-regular web variety show, which is broadcast live from Weir's TRI Studios, has featured members of the Grateful Dead and its extended family swapping stories and performing a mix of tunes. During a recent episode, the former Bobby & The Midnights lead singer revealed that he will take the show on the road this fall, where he will be joined by Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Jonathan Wilson, Jay Lane (Primus), Jason Crosby and Jeff Chimenti (Furthur, RatDog), as [...]
It's that time of the year again, everybody! The best holiday of the year (yes, better than National Ferris Wheel Day AND Leif Erikson Day) has returned . I've been going to Record Store Day since 2009, and even when I didn't look up the releases beforehand, I'd still walk out of my favorite record store (RIP Cutlers in New Haven) with something unique and special. Unique and special is what Record Store Day does incredibly well, and it's why we love it so much. Since its relatively humble beginnings in 2008, the event has grown in popularity every [...]

Neal Casal has announced the release of a limited edition 7-inch single (via Royal Potato Family ) for Record Store Day, featuring his rendition of The Grateful Dead's Mountains of the Moon . The B-side is an instrumental acoustic guitar-based piece entitled Grimes' Surf Story . A passionate record collector and vinyl junkie himself, he has explained the reasons he chose to cover this song, " I love 'Mountains Of The Moon' for its baroque qualities, the very strange lyrics, and it's just a great melody, plain and simple. There's a fantastic line, 'The [...]

North Carolina is rich in history and broad in geography, stretching from warm beachfront majesty to the base of Appalachia. That it holds a dominant place in the history of folk music is due in part to its cultural diversity, and in part to its situation midway up the coast, along the route that folk strands might have once traveled from North to South and back again. This combination of factors has made it an influential locus and crossroads for several southern folk movements of the last century, including branches of the blues, appalachian music, strains of bluegrass, and other [...]
