This month, Mojo magazine once again revisits a classic album with the help of some of today's best artists. The Yellow Submarine film was released on July 17, 1968 and the Beatles soundtrack album followed six months later. In 1999, the Yellow Submarine Songtrack , a collection of music from that era, was released and it is this track listing that has mainly driven Yellow Submarine Resurfaces , the Mojo tribute. Covers range from Benjamin Francis Leftwich tackling With [...]
Nick Talbot's Gravenhurst project returned this year with a new album, the first in five years following 20072s The Western Lands . The Ghost in Daylight is a record that brims with atmospherics, a soothing-but-dark undercurrent and Talbot's talent for songwriting and performing - a combination that secures the Bristolian's place among the UK's best musical talents. A long-desired subject for a Best Fit Session, we finally met up with Nick last month when he was in town to promote the new record, his fourth long-form release on the [...]

The Ghost In Daylight is the third effort from Gravenhurst , the vehicle of singer/songwriter Nick Talbot, and is an album that grabbed my attention right from the start. Talbot fills the album with solid guitar work, soft melodies, and a myriad of effects to set the atmosphere. The album name is one that is very fitting to this collection of songs. The Ghost In Daylight progresses through a series of soft songs that very effectively set a soft and haunting tone. There is nothing jarring or suddenly loud to pull the listener out [...]

Gravenhurst serves as the songwriting vehicle for British soundscapist Nick Talbot, who's ending the longest hiatus of his career with The Ghost in Daylight . There's always some added pressure after a long break between albums and it's been five years since his previous effort The Western Lands, an album of feedback-drenched folk that showcased Talbot's ability to achieve restrained grandeur while still sounding organic. Talbot aims for the former but abandons the latter on The Ghost in Daylight , an exercise in drab over-calculation. Opening track "Circadian" is the template for every song on the [...]

I went back to my old way of using different guitar tunings to come up with new ideas, listening to lots of Richard Thompson and [...]
Sadly, I'm not really sure how many people out there in the Internet world are aware of Nick Talbot and the incredible music he's been making under the Gravenhurst moniker. In case you haven't, then let this be an introduction to one of the songwriters that will go on to be part of your life for the duration. His latest effort, The Ghost in Daylight , will be released by Warp Records on May 1st, and I'm in love with this sprawling single [...]

"What Nick Talbot has served up here is, on the whole, a majestic portion of atmosphere drenched folk. The kind of portion that you can really sit down and sink your teeth into. This isn't for the iPod shuffle owners of the world. This is for the patient and observant. And for displaying said qualities, you'll be richly rewarded for each listen. It's arguably Gravenhurst's finest album to date, and one that absorbs you. You should welcome this absorption with open arms." That's what 405 writer Edward Cibbens had to say about the latest album [...]

Nick Talbot's successive albums as Gravenhurst have seen his initial intricate folk picking overtaken by a more psychedelic, full band sound – an interest made explicit with his extended take on The Kinks' See My Friends from 2005's Fires in Distant Buildings . The Ghost in Daylight , Gravenhurst's fifth, narrows focus back onto Talbot's own performing and arranging talents, but it's an album rich in variety and interest. The instrumentation is sparse, with Talbot's delicate guitar backed by a variety of soft, antique keyboard tones, but the production is warm, lending the [...]

For those who don't know who, what, why and when Gravenhurst is; it's the musical vehicle driven by Bristol's Nick Talbot. Under the Gravenhurst moniker, he's produced some of the finest lo-fi-shoegaze-folk music of the last decade… The Ghost In Daylight is no different. It's a wonderfully forlorn mix of intricate folk guitar, ambient fuzz and at times an OK Computer essence of grandiose. Opening track 'Carcadian' is an instrumental haze of folky guitar intertwined with blotches of fuzz, which provides the perfect introduction before the album's standout moment. [...]

For five uniformly strong albums, Gravenhurst have operated in the twilight zone, cultivating a fine line in superficially pretty but actually quite unsettling compositions that make up for missing explosions with slow-burning intensity. Even when they have increased the tempo, songwriter/mainstay Nick Talbot's hushed vocals have acted like an official standing around at the scene of an accident, repeating the familiar mantra "there's nothing to see here" in the hope that curious bystanders will disperse and let the investigations into some grisly horror story commence in peace. All of which is a major turn-off [...]

Gravenhurst have announced a couple of new live UK dates for April and May of this year. The first show will take place at Saint Pancras Old Church on April 25th (solo-show), and the second show will take place on May 22nd at The Lexington with a new full band line-up. The shows come in support of their new album, The Ghost In Daylight , which is released on April 30th through Warp Records. Not only that but the Ultraskull comic is back! Read this awesome explanation of its return: [...]
Tony, Sid, Cassie, Michelle, Jal, Chris, Anwar, and Maxxie are all back in Series 2 of E42s hit teen drama Skins . With all of their stories concluding as they prepare to head off to college and the real world, it's sure to make you laugh, cry, smile, and sigh. You'll share their ride on the roller coaster of emotions caused by the tragedies, triumphs, and - of course - drugs and drama that fill Series 2. And holy $#!+. If the plot line alone isn't enough to hook you, then the music is. If it was [...]

fünf lange jahre hat er uns warten lassen, dieser nick talbot. jetzt endlich gibt es neue und gewohnt gute klänge von gravenhurst. "the prize" ist ...

Subject of a recent CoS Where We Live feature, Bush Hall provided an admirable platform for Maximo Park's Paul Smith to air his solo work, encapsulated in the October release of Margins. There is nothing that marginal about tonight however. The snow currently paralysing much of the transport network outside London has reduced a sold-out gig to around three-quarters full, if that. The heavily coated and booted crowd though make up in warmth what they lack in numbers and there seem to be so many people here from North East England that it feels [...]
