It's almost over, finally. After an almost ludicrous amount of time and money spent on this year's American election, it's almost over. What has it been, almost 2 years and billions of dollars spent on this campaign? Mercy me I don't know what the 24 hour news networks are going to do when this election is over. I have a suggestion, Report the actual news eh. Say what you will about the great white north but when they have an election they don't fuck around. Election announced and 4 or 5 weeks later, boom [...]

So...I assigned homework to the staff. Find a song that sums up the last eight years with George W. Bush, and come up with 2 or 3 sentences/paragraphs to explain the choice in song. I joined in the fun too. Problem is, we couldn't keep it short...so it's going to be a three part series. HERE IS PART TWO! MOOKIE: I made the mistake of watching the September 11th, 2001 show of Howard Stern's [...]

Alpinekat - The Large Hadron Rap A couple weeks ago, a friend passed along a link to this awesome rap about the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) built under the France-Switzerland border by CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). The world's largest particle accelerator has been under construction for over 10 years with a cost in the billions of dollars. It's designed to accelerate protons at energies of 7 trillion electron volts along a 27km underground circular tunnel in order to produce high speed particle collisions, the results of which will produce new unseen particles [...]

Today in Music History: In 1958, Born on this day, Bruce Dickinson vocalist for Iron Maiden. Great Big Sea (GBS), is a Celtic, rock, and pop band from the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Yes I know you've seen them grace Good Rockin' a few times here over the years and with good reason. Their hard-driving approach has not only made them popular in Canada, where they've been nominated for four Juno awards, it has also brought them a growing recognition throughout North America and Europe. British music [...]

Here's a tiny St. Paddy's Day subgenre for you: Celtic punk, a genre arguably invented by The Pogues , though surely influenced by both the "British" folkrock invasion and the early punk music of The Clash. To truly explore the broader implications of this musical form requires deep understanding of many factors: the Irish diaspora, the evolution of fusion forms in music, the confluence of post-punk folk and the adolescent mindset, the modern commercialism of St. Patrick's Day. Such scope is beyond the purview of any blog. But considering the [...]
How great does it feel to be back from a vacation at the beach? Simple. It doesn't. Staying in Fenwick with Brian's family and Brae was so relaxing and fun. Makes me want to be a freelancer, move to the beach and never have to leave. Though I suppose not being there everyday does make it all the more nice when you visit. But next year's visit cannot come soon enough. I took an insane about of photographs and video. Hopefully to create some sort of Fenwick 2007 media disc. Brae [...]

After this post from Best Week Ever , I was gonna do a post called "A Pack of Wolves". As there are oodles of bands with "wolf" in the title. Instead, The Duke will feature bands with the word "Great" in their name. Fourteen bands to be exact. In beta-alphaical order: The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain ~ Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps The Sixth Great Lake ~ Everybody Loves To Be Loved The Late Greats ~ [...]

Today in Music History: In 1992, during a Metallica gig at Orlando Arena fans dangled an usher by his ankles from the balcony as trouble broke out at the concert. The band was charged $38,000 for repairs and cleaning after the audience trashed the building. Over last weekend I read an article about blogging that was interesting. The article said that this "fad" has peaked and that from 2006 to the present over 200 million blogs have been abandoned. The bottom line seemed to [...]
