The Graboid is back and here we are once again with the week's new album releases. Still getting back into the swing of things so I haven't listened to many of these in their entirety, but I have sampled each of these and a couple I would recommend include Bear in Heaven's I Love You, It's Cool , Great Lake Swimmers' New Wild Everywhere , and Raven & Chimes' Holiday Life . - The Graboid is an on-going weekly feature here at The Yellow Stereo since its [...]

Well, here we are once more. As the summer nears, these weeks are growing in popularity for music release dates, chosen by the bands. In about another month or two, we'll be full-steam ahead! This week, we're pleasantly surprised to find a lot of artists we've heard buzzing including one of our favorite band names with a release this week - Bear In Heaven . Honestly, I don't know how these band names are made up, but I love it. Their album name I Love You It's Cool is equally as hip. These guys are [...]
Deftly incorporating the delicate with rich tones &warm roots of folk music, this is the magic boat ride we've been expecting from Great Lake Swimmers.

It's been one of those days in one of those weeks for me. Lucky enough to have had an advance copy of Great Lake Swimmers ' New Wild Everywhere for a few weeks now, but every time I sit down to write this post, something happens to my thought processes and I can't get it to make any sense. I usually write about albums and artists as I listen to their music, but with this album, the act of listening to it seems to scramble my brain waves and leaves me frustrated and [...]

I'd be lying if I didn't say that Great Lake Swimmers have made some of the most beautiful, melodic roots/folk based music of the last decade. However, I would also be lying if I didn't admit that the band needed to be a little more adventurous in order to keep their sound from becoming stale. They strike a pretty good balance on their new album New Wild Everywhere . Songs like "Think That You Might Be Wrong", with it's familiar vocal harmonies and string accompaniment, should be comforting to long-time fans. [...]

True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today's age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]
Great Lake Swimmers play up their rustic charm on The Legion Sessions, a live album that features many of the songs from their 2010 offering Lost Channels. Recorded at the Royal Canadian Legion Pub (apparently a northern hot spot of some renown), and the songs invoke the friendliness and familiarity of a tight-knit artistic community. Picture a show where the band is playing for an audience of friends and everyone is buying each other whiskey drinks. There is perhaps no setting more ideal for hearing these songs, but they're not bad secondhand, either. [...]
Filed under: Video , Exclusive Universal Music Canada What better way to celebrate this Juno Awards weekend's, er, celebration of Canadian music than with this exclusive, maple syrup-coated cover of 2011 Juno-winner Neil Young 's "Harvest Moon" by this year's nominees Arkells and CanRock cohorts from Cuff the Duke , Great Lake Swimmers , City and Colour and Ladies of the Canyon . The working-class [...]
Great Lake Swimmers just started their massive tour this week and it ends June 23rd in support of their highly anticipated record, New Wild Everywhere , out April 3rd. This song is what I imagine stripped down National songs would sound like (also if Matt Berninger wasn't so monotone sounding). It's gorgeous and the plucking of strings might as well be the plucking of heartstrings. "I should have known that in a storm, you'd act like thunder and shift your form...cut me free, let me go."

Frank Yang Despite only seeing four bands, I like to think that I covered a fair bit of ground - stylistically, geographically, exploratorily (?), what have you - on the first night of Canadian Musicfest . The Friday night stuck slightly closer to home on all fronts but yielded much better and consistent results. The evening kicked off at Rancho Relaxo with Neufovin in all the way from Finland (I mistakenly called them Norwegian in my festival preview and apologize profusely). Besides having an affinity for anything [...]

Fans of Toronto-based indie folksters Great Lake Swimmers have been waiting a while for the follow-up to 2009's Lost Channels, but you can finally listen to the new record New Wild Everywhere right here before it drops April 3 via Nettwerk. The new LP "thematically picks up where the previous album left off, exploring transcendence in the natural world to describe the universal themes of love, mortality and escape." Nevertheless, New Wild Everywhere marked a departure from the band's adventurous recording process, choosing instead to record in a normal studio. Read more »
