The other day I was checking around this new space I call my blog and I was clicking through all the links, making sure they were pointed at the correct sites, and so on. Well I stumbled down to where the ad banners are displayed and I did something that I honestly rarely, if ever, do. I clicked on one because it actually caught my attention. It was actually an ad for a free music mix presented over at the website for The Vancouver Sun. And of course, like a good little blogger, I snapped it [...]

Gah. Much as we love a bit of melancholia around here, it's quite another thing to see one of our friends feel fed up. Now my record collection isn't ever going to make for the most cheery post, but here are some songs that I hope make things better. Listen - Serge Gainsbourg - Ballade de Melody Nelson Listen - Ron Sexsmith (ft. Chris Martin) - Gold in them Hills Listen - Great Lake Swimmers - See You on the Moon (a rare lighthearted moment find [...]
Today's short story is from one of my favorite authors of short fiction and the man who inspired Robert Altman's Short Cuts , the brilliant Raymond Carver. Carver was one of the great writers of the 20th Century, a man who once described himself as, "hooked on writing short stories." Here is one of his better known and most highly regarded pieces, "A Small, Good Thing," with the full text and mp3s after the jump. Next week's short story is "The Lady with the Dog" by Anton Chekhov, whose death Carver himself immortalized in "The Errand." [...]

Think My Morning Jacket's Jim James soothing vocals over a terrific acoustic sounding band. Great Lake Swimmers is simply a riveting listening experience. Check out the reviews: "A wonderful atmosphere - minimalist well done" - New York Times "Ambient Zen Americana" - Mojo Magazine "Spiritual folk of the most affecting variety" - Stylus "Tony Dekker takes acoustics very seriously. His haunting, somber ballads emit an otherworldly quality, due in no [...]

Nettwerk will release the third edition of their benefit album to raise funds for VH1's Save the Music Foundation on October 2nd. The For The Kids disc includes a little something from Canada's Great Lake Swimmers, a song which previously appeared on See You On The Moon!: Songs for Kids of All Ages in 2006 on Paper Bag Records. Here's that Great Lake Swimmers song... see you on the moon! [mp3] And I'm looking forward to hearing the of Montreal contribution and the inevitable, and extremely disturbing inner visuals of Mr Barnes sans pantalons (thank you, youtube,or [...]

I think the autoharp is one of the most underused instruments in music today. Luckily, some folks agree with me. Here are a few memorable tunes arranged in no particular order… Smashing Pumpkins ~ We Only Come Out At Night Great Lake Swimmers ~ I Am Part Of A Large Family drowsy ~ Me and the Pedestal June Carter Cash ~ Ring of Fire Grizzly Bear ~ Lullabye [...]
Image: Threadless Decided to compile a mix for The Sunday Shuffle right after my last post since I won't have internet access till Monday night. Hopefully this will tide all of you over until then, plus these are easy to make since the tracks are just randomly chosen. If everything goes as planned, this should post itself on it's own. Never tried it before, but hope you all enjoy and i'll see you next week! The Radio Dept. | "It's Personal" [...]

Great Lake Swimmers "Various Stages" This is a little old, off of their previous album Bodies and Minds , but I am just now getting really into it. They have a new album out Ongiara which is equally as good. I love their mellow tone, makes the time go by slowly and the soft vocals are perfect for nighttime listening or Sunday morning. The lyrics on this song have a really intimate touch to them as well. Myspace Official Site [...]
This past Saturday, I headed out to my favorite place to catch music in Chicago, Schubas , to catch Great Lake Swimmers . After sitting through a couple of unmemorable opening acts Tony Dekker and crew finally hit the stage around 11:40. They opened with a couple of my favorite tracks, "Backstage With The Moden Dancers" and "Various Stages." During "Various Stages," I leaned over to my buddy and said how shocked I was that Tony's voice sounded almost exactly like it does on their albums. I have read a few reviews saying that the real [...]

We spent Friday and Saturday night with the Great Lake Swimmers and, while both performances were fantastic and different, we managed to walk away from the weekend even bigger fans than we were prior. If the two performances did anything it was to bolster my admiration for their recent album, Ongiara . I'll be honest and admit that compared to their previous albums I was somewhat lukewarm on the album comparatively, but it was the songs off that album that are still [...]
Getting to the Hotel Cafe by doors open at 7 o'clock is a transit impossibility. I loaded This American Life's - 24 Hours at the Golden Apple for the ride, which made the hour long/11 mile trek not only bearable but quite a nice start to the evening. For those not yet aquatinted with the Hotel Cafe, the place is a treat. You enter in through an alley, it's small. The stage is a low riser wrapped

Christo and Jeanne-Claude - The Umbrellas (1991) I've filled a case full of meager treasures and am heading to find a lover in the sky. A sky with a busty blue monochrome draped with long aeronautic strings of white pearls teetering frighteningly high overhead. I plan for us to step into a vast, still bathtub of earth filled the brim and watch our displacement splash overflow into the shape of mountains at a distance and spill over the edge of the horizon. And as Tony Dekker of Great Lake Swimmers [...]

Toronto's Great Lake Swimmers play here in Dallas tomorrow evening at Bend Studio , and we've just been informed that there are only around 20 tickets left, so you might want to get on that if you plan on coming. Check the poster for all the show details, and if you're undecided, here's a sample of how great the band sounds in an intimate live setting: mp3: Great Lake Swimmers Moving Pictures Silent Films (live on CBC Radio) [...]
