Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, Nova Scotia With over 130 bands over 5 days in venues spread all over town, Halifax Pop Explosion is quickly becoming one of the most respected festivals in Canada. Under the guidance of new artistic director Jonny Stevens, the festival has grown, and this year includes the Music Matters conference, a handful of label showcases, a mix-tape swap and plenty of extra curricular activities to keep even the most demanding festival goer satisfied. Kicking things off on Tuesday evening are Long Long Long . Having already garnered a [...]
Music video for "She Comes To Me In Dreams" by the Great Lake Swimmers from the group's 2009 release, Lost Channels .

Frank Yang I guess the final day of coverage is as good a time as any to talk about some of the non- Pop Explosion aspects of my visit to Halifax, which was my first-ever visit to the east coast and first trip within Canada in over three years. Though to be honest, I didn't do a whole lot that wasn't HPX-related - some wandering around downtown Halifax, which seemed to be in a particularly epic state of construction and/or renovation, the previously mentioned fast/walkabout to Point Pleasant, and most enjoyably a visit to [...]

Adam CK Vollick When it was announced that Neil Young was working with Daniel Lanois on a new record, you couldn't help but pay attention. Not only did you have two Canadian musical icons working together for the first time, but Lanois was behind records that rejuvenated more than a few legendary careers, including those of Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris . Whether Young's career - 40 years old and defined by numerous artistic swerves - needed rejuvenation is another matter but the fruits of his collaboration with Lanois, [...]

Earlier this month, we caught wind of a forthcoming Led Zeppelin tribute album featuring dozens of Pacific Northwest artists (M. Ward, Chris Walla, etc.), and now Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones are getting selections from their famous oeuvres covered by an impressive roster of indie stars, as well. First up is Subterranean Home Sick Blues: A Tribute to Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home, which includes versions of songs off the aforementioned 1965 classic LP (as well as other Dylan songs from that time period) by Castanets, J. Tillman, the Morning Benders, Laura [...]

This week, Great Lake Swimmers released "Ballad of a Fisherman's Wife" for Swim Drink Fish Music Club . The charity was developed by Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, and other Waterkeeper organizations in Canada. Here's how they describe their mission: "The Swim Drink Fish Music Club brings together artists, activists, and citizens just like you who care about clean water. By celebrating the Club's exclusive and rare music, you are contributing to the fight for swimmable, drinkable, fishable water in your community." As for the Great Lake Swimmers track, here's a bit about that: [...]
It seems like for the last three weekends, Sufjan Stevens has made his way into my post. First it was his upcoming tour , then it was his upcoming EP , now it's his upcoming album and new single. The Age of Adz (pronounced "Odds") is coming via Asthmatic Kitty Records on October 12. It's Sevens' first song-based full length since 2005 when he dropped Illinois on an unsuspecting indie-dom. You'll be able to pick it up on CD and MP3 in October but have to [...]

Ages ago, I found this R.E.M. bootleg at a now-defunct record shop. It was wonderful, and intimate, and full of strange cover versions I had never heard. Just before launching into "World Leader Pretend," Michael Stipe says: "We're really happy to be here at Mountain Stage. We're surrounded by really good people, and we're gonna do a couple songs for you." At the time, I had no idea where, or what, Mountain Stage was... but I wanted to be there. Years later, thanks to the magic of the Internet and NPR Music , I get to experience amazing, live [...]

Living in the capital of Canada, (Ottawa, Ontario), the last thing you start to expect from your city is to be rich in the arts. I mean, with parliament a stone's throw away from any part in the city, Ottawa is more about politics than it is about the arts. This summer is different, though. Every July, the city puts on a 10 day music festival called Ottawa Bluesfest in which they bring many different musicians (not all blues, last years before they brought Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fergie, Wyclef Jean and Kanye West). Although there are usually [...]

Music video for "River's Edge" by the Great Lake Swimmers from the group's 2009 album, "Lost Channels."

Things were picking up into full swing on Thursday (July 8th) of Bluesfest. It was an eclectic amount of musicians for all the ages. The acts that I saw were: Laurent Bourque Good2Go Lindsay Ferguson The Bacon Brothers Great Lake Swimmers The Moody Blues Andrew Bird The B-52s [...]
For the thousands of indie-rock cuts recorded in a home studio, the desperate insertion of ambiguity is a common plague. As DIY techniques continue to grow more popular in both rock and hip-hop, some artists are keen on lowering their standards in an effort to make their image that much more captivating. In most instances, [...]

Ryan Marr Toronto's Forest City Lovers began essentially as a pseudonym for singer-songwriter Kat Burns, and while ably assisted by members of Toronto's burgeoning music community her debut The Sun & The Wind was accordingly spare, but still gave hints to her broader pop ambitions. 20082s Haunting Moon Sinking found Forest City Lovers no longer a pseudonym but a proper band and accordingly, it was a much fuller and rangier affair with a few moments of pure pop bounce amidst the more contemplative [...]

The tag line for this year's festival is 'Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest Goes Hollywood,' and judging from the star-studded lineup, the organizers aren't kidding.
