Toronto – Fresh water accounts for only 2.5% of all available water on the planet. From that bucket, 70% is locked up in glaciers, ice caps, and permafrost, leaving 30% in the ground. The North American Great Lakes make up about 20% of all of the fresh water on the planet. It is one of our most precious resources and makes Canada and the U.S. among a mere handful of countries that have an abundance of the stuff. In 1950, the world population was 2.5 billion; while today we careen towards 7. As we look to a population approaching [...]

Ed Levine and Adam Kuban of Grub Street New York set out to find the best pizza in America. After the tedious search, they've narrowed it down to their final four: Pizzeria Mozza (LA), Great Lake (CHI), Motorino (NY), and Pizzeria Bianco (Phoenix). Click HERE for a larger version of the March Madness bracket. On a side note: Shouldn't Chicago and New York get its own region? I can attest to the fact that Los Angeles pizza tastes like tomato soup on toast. [...]

The Apples In Stereo , Of [...]

With sincerest apologies to Ben Crum, who hates his vocals on this track, today's MP3 is the Great Lakes ' cover of Donovan 's "Teen Angel," as presented on A Gift from a Garden to a Flower: A Tribute to Donovan , a compilation released in 2002. I happen to like this track a lot, but apparently Ben wishes he'd had another go at it. You can judge for yourself. The compilation is still in print (yes, I broke my rule), and you can get it at Darla Records' website . [...]

Diamond Times by Great Lakes has been in steady rotation for the past two weeks in my house. I enjoyed the album from the start, but I can't help thinking I've heard it before. I'm listening right now and am reminded of early Wilco on A.M. and Being There with some of Cracker's Kerosene Hat... and a dash of the Beach Boys. The album kicks off with "The Pinks and the Purples" and sets the indie-twang-pop tone. It, like much of the album, features a cornucopia of instrumentation [...]
Busy, busy, busy-my apologies. From Philly to Brooklyn in 30 days is quite the maneuver for me, I'll admit that. I'll pop in sporadically over the next few days to drop some quickies on you, though, so don't worry. We have an ace (and accomplished) reviewer joining the team who will be introduced tomorrow. Tonight he is off to cover the Flaming Lips show so we should have some pics and thoughts up tomorrow. But today-ah yes-today. I must run but I'll leave a few gems for you to [...]

Great Lakes - Storming 2000 Pitchfork's recent feature about the best songs of the '60s was definitely an impressive achievement. To me, it was a coming-of-age moment for the site. Still, I was a little surprised to see the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" listed as the best song of the '60s. Sure, the song is gorgeously produced and arranged, evoking that melancholy nostaglia that Brian Wilson perfected. But I thought all the hipsters had moved on to psych-folk now (or some other hip new thing) [...]
It took me a little while to come around to the charms of Great Lakes forthcoming release Diamond Times . The first time I put it on all I could think about was how much I miss Beulah. Let's just say there's a bit of a family resemblance. Like Beulah Great Lakes were part of the Elephant 6 collective responsible for Elf Power, Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel and a host of other semi-psych bands noted for their extended memberships and wide array of instrumentation. For Diamond Times Great Lakes has moved [...]
