Best known for his print work, Kevin combines digital and traditional techniques to create a unique style. You'll catch him on the road (Flatstock, Renegade Craft Fair) or online (he maintains a blog with process videos, Q and A's, photos from events, and various other miscellany). I was a little late in discovering Great Northern 's 2007 single 'Home.' And despite my late adoption of this cruisin' tune, it's a strong track that was a few years ahead of its time. Stream 'Home' by Great Northern below: Great Northern - Home .mp3
David Lynch plans to release a full electronic music album, and he'll tell the world about it at the International Music Summit keynote speech in Ibiza on May 26 (via Skype from his studio in Los Angeles). Lynch and longtime engineer "Big" Dean Hurley will discuss how the album came about. The filmmaker previously released "Good Day Today" and "I Know" via Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank's label, Sunday Best. He's influenced innumerable musicians as well, many of whom told us about their favorite Lynch moments. [...]

Music video for "New Tricks" by Great Northern from the duo's 2009 release, "Remind Me Where the Light Is."
Seems as if it's been forever since Great Northern unveiled its shimmering sophomore album "Remind Me Where the Light Is." [ Maybe it's time to dust that album off? ] The dream-pop duo of Solon Bixler and Rachel Stolte has been in the studio working on new material, "writing, recording, plotting" and working on "other exciting new projects soon to be discussed," according to a missive on their website. So it was a nice surprise when this kaleidoscopic video for "New Tricks" popped up on You Tube's music front page. The video stars Stolte and a [...]
The gulf has been plagued by some tragedies in the recent past. First Katrina and now the biggest oil spill in history. Yikes. Now that I think about it, I haven't heard of very many bands coming out of the area either. I don't blame them; it must be tough to make music when you have other things on your mind. Then again, there are bands like Youth Sounds that use it as a strength.

Tonight, Samwise hit me with this epic, slow-building anthem from the L.A. indie group Great Northern. He caught it on an episode of Friday Night Lights , and as soon as you press play you'll see why. Imagine this in the background of the most emotional/uplifting/tear-induc ing scene of all time. A slow-mo montage perhaps? Tears all over the place, people hugging, screaming, tearing each other's hearts out...all with this captivating gem blasting in the background. "Driveway" is a nearly perfect anthem that was just built for the big screen. Download: Great Northern - [...]
I went to the Bootleg Theater to see Danish indie rockers Choir of Young Believers last Saturday night, mostly out of curiosity after reading a Rolling Stone review that compared them to "hearing Radiohead's Thom Yorke in the middle of a Sixties Roy Orbison single..." I was also curious about locals Great Northern, who've been recommended by friends in the past.I arrived sometime in the final 3

[Huge weekend ahead. And that's even before I decide how to commemorate Quincy Jones' 77th birthday on Sunday.] Tonight: Great pairing at the Troubadour — local trio the Happy Hollows , slowly gaining attention after the re-release of "Spells" early this year on Autumn Tone, headline, and the Veils [pictured], the U.K. quartet whose 2009 album "Sun Gangs" was 40 minutes of brooding bliss, support. ... At Spaceland, Quasi comes to town behind its eighth new album, "American Gong." ... Also: Night [...]

Story - Great Northern Another 2009 artist that I never got around to posting about: Great Northern . Their record Remind Me Where The Light Is got quite a few plays from me back in the summer but never quite lit a fire for me. Returning to it in the past couple weeks, it's hard for me to say why that was. It's a very nicely constructed piece of good old fashioned indie rock, featuring some very nice melodies and more than enough oomph (to use the clinical term). [...]
