L.A.-based indie-poppers Great Northern will release their second album, Remind Me Where The Light Is , on Tuesday. Comprised of Solon Bixler and Rachel Stolte, the pair's latest collection is a musical departure from 2007's Trading Twilight For Daylight . "We took a lot more risks by entering uncomfortable territory that wasn't touched on the last record," says Solon Bixler. "We dug deeper into the unpleasant, which helped us to find the beauty." The twosome kicks off a tour with The Dears on May 1st, so check them out when the roll into a club near [...]

Baby Scream "Ups and Downs" Baby Scream is a London based band originally formed by Juan Mazzola in Argentina. Mazzola has an affection for several classic pop influences like The Byrds, John Lennon, and The Replacements. The album goes through many moods, from fast tempo punk guitars of "Everyday (I Die a Little Bit)" to the mid tempo jangle of "Suddenly,"and then the somber Jeff Lynne-like ballad "One More Chance." All 8 songs are full of great classic hooks and interesting chord changes that I know pop fans will cherish. Juan's vocals have the same gentle delivery of [...]

Great Northern Great Nothern - "Houses" (mp3) California's Great Northern have a new record coming out April 28 entitled Remind Me Where The Light Is and I've had it stuck on repeat ever since I first listened to it. Well, OK maybe not literally on repeat ever since I first got it, but I have listened to it a few times since it came in and I think it is a damn fine album (as is [...]
You and your slob bandmates might as well own up to being jealous of Great Northern, the ultra-attractive, cool modern-pop duo from L.A. that soundtracks NBA commercials and pals around with its neighbors in Silversun Pickups. Singer/guitarist Solon Bixler and singer/keyboardist Rachel Stolte unleash sophomore album Remind Me Where The Light Is (Eenie Meenie) on [...]

One of the first bands I covered for Filter Magazine two years ago was Great Northern . I was treated to an intimate show in a little dive bar that I will never forget. Now I hear this shoegazy band all over the place: Commercials, soundtracks TV shows and just about everywhere else. They've since been on regular rotation on my iPod and streaming on Imeem while I'm slaving away in my dungeon. Just as I was starting to need something to listen to other than T rading Twilight for Daylight , [...]

Started several years ago as a side project for Solon Bixler - formerly of 30 Seconds To Mars - and Rachel Stolte, Great Northern soon became the duo's primary gig. The band's new record, Show Me Where The Light Is , is the follow-up to their 2007 debut, Trading Twilight For Daylight , which was a pleasant, but low-impact affair that went largely unnoticed. Their new material features a bigger, more epic sound with walls of guitars and layers of vocals that sometimes falls into generic alt-rock territory, but often creates some surprising and fascinating results. I imagine [...]

If you're into haunting, morose and pretty epicly amazing arrangements and cooey, shoegaze vocals, Great Northern 's new sophomore disc, Remind Me Where The Light Is (out April 28), should be in your possession post-haste. The Dears are kicking off their tour with Eulogies on May 1 and celebrating by releasing an unreleased b-side once a week. Great Northern 's Remind Me Where The Light Is is set to drop one week from today (April 28) and I couldn't think of a better record to spend your money on. The California duo of Rachel Stolte and Solon Bixler go grand and heavily produced (that west-coast feel) on their sophomore effort - and you know what? I don't care - I love it. Piano-driven, string-laden pop rock has always had a soft spot in my heart, which is exactly what Stolte and Bixler do best. The reason why I mention [...]

Meanwhile, the prolific Conor Oberst is back in less than a year, while busy Jack White has started yet [...]
