Great albums and cover songs/tributes. Always a slippery slope and one that I have taken on. By "I/me" I don't mean I have recorded anything, heaven forbid I actually have any sort of musical talent but there are more than a few musicians who do. More than a few of those musicians agreed to pay homage to the album Long May You Run, J. Tillman by the artist formerly known as J. Tillman. I have a page set up for this cover project ( HERE ) that will [...]

this was tough cause this is probably the best year, as a whole, that i have heard in quite a few years. i know im missing a record or two, so there may be an addendum later on, but im pretty sure that this is how this should look. with that said, i know as soon as i hit "publish" somethings going to pop in my head. either way, my top ten will be coming in the next day or so. i think i am going to 5 one day, 5 the next. does it really matter? nope... [...]

one of my favorite bands since i started this little site 7 years ago, travel by sea, was made up of kyle kersten and brian kraft. when they created travel by sea, they had never met, just exchanged recordings and they would work on their parts and bring other folks in to fill in the gaps. they made three freakin great records, shadows rise, days of my escape and two states and the blindness that follows - very highly recommended! either way, travel by sea is no more, or maybe just on and indefinite hiatus. kersten has teamed with pedal [...]

Greater Pacific's previous release on Yer Bird was a six track EP that made a lasting impression on this listener and the bands debut full length release looks set do do the same, the winning formula delivered by Rainfall is tweaked and tuned to light up Incandescent creating an album that cast's a warm glow over the Americana genre, not the first time I've made seasonal comparisons on albums but I'll not let that stop me - the album does fit the mood of a waning summer ebbing into the dappled light and colours of autumn, [...]

Greater Pacific - Incandescent. Original Album art by Karl Haglund (www.karlhaglund.com) Today is release day for Southern California Americana band Greater Pacific and their album Incandescent ! Yes, they are on our label Yer Bird Records so I apologize for the spam - but you know you wanna hear it. This is the debut full length album from the band and it comes in at 12 tracks and about 44 minutes of the hazy laid back Americana you might have gleaned from their lead off EP from last year. The new [...]

Our best of August mix is ready and even though it is typically a slightly quieter month for new releases, we can still offer you more than 20 cracking new tunes together with a few 'hot off the press' new ones. The result? A brilliant mix to keep you going as we enter autumn (aka the fall for our American friends). Either way, just enjoy. Check the side bar for all our other monthly mixes too. Hey There, Well...I didn't think I'd be doing this again this year but someone actually requested it. We'll see what new Christmas music turns up in the next month and post it all here. Cheers, Craig Here's the first new stuff I'd like to share. Beta Radio are a Wilmington, NC based duo who excel at vocal harmonies and kind of eclectic americana instrumentation. Here's their song "The Song The Season Brings" The Song The Season Brings Also Inara George and [...]
A little self promotion is never bad. Right? RIGHT? So my little label over at Yer Bird Records is starting a trend in having at least one long weekend 2 for 1 special each year on all our wares and it is happening right now. Purchase the new Hezekiah Jones LP? Why not have the new Ghosts I've Met LP thrown in for good measure? Yeah, its great stuff. LPs, CDs and digital downloads - its the wild west over there this weekend. See our home page on the label site HERE for more information! [...]
Greater Pacific is a new project featuring Kyle Kersten and John Phinney from Travel by Sea and their debut EP, Rainfall, is about the most aptly named record to come out in awhile. Every thing about this EP sounds like a soft rain shower - from the languid percussion, electronic effects, guitar and especially Kersten's [...]

Our first artist today is the Southern California Americana outfit Greater Pacific. This band was born out of a previous collaboration between vocalist Kyle Kersten and pedal steel guitarist John Phinney after they realized how well their instruments blended together. On the six-song Rainfall EP, Kersten and Phinney have created an atmospheric dreamscape of songs powered by the mournful sound of Phinney's steel and the yearning in Kersten's lyrics. Rainfall , it turns out, isn't just the title of the EP, it's also the perfect setting to enjoy these tunes. Put this one [...]
This week's Best New Releases includes new singles from new LPs and EPs from bands all across the indie spectrum. We've been loving The Radio Dept.'s work for about three or four years, so it's just fitting to include a great track from their new singles collection, available now. Following TRD is a terrific, minimalistic, [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
Greater Pacific, Distance (2011) from Henkydory on Vimeo . [...]

Greater Pacific are a "side project" of the band Travel By Sea - or rather include some members of TBS - and have released a 6 track digital EP on Yer Bird Records as of today! The band is led by Kyle Kersten and John Phinney with the help of drummer Mike Cusick - all three also record as part of Travel By Sea. With stunning flecks of Angela Correa mixed in for (very) good measure, this EP is a stunning if not somber affair. Just the way we like it around here. [...]

greater pacific is a new project from kyle kersten and john phinney, members of the fantastic alt-country / folk band travel by sea . today (how convenient!) they're releasing their debut EP on yer bird records entitled rainfall . these six laid back country-folk tunes will really grow on you, as they have on me over the past month. kyle's made-for-alt-country voice and the band's love of pedal steel are what had me hooked on travel by sea...these elements as well as a slightly more obvious 'country' sound have me loving rainfall . maybe the [...]

One of my favourite albums of the last twelve months was the superb Two States and The Blindness That Follows by Travel By Sea , this EP from Greater Pacific features a trio of guys from Travel By Sea, Kyle Kersten’s vocal is instantly recognisable, John Phinney’s aching steel envelops the tracks and Mike Cusick keeps times on the drums, so there’s a certain familiarity here and fans of Two States and The Blindness That Follows will love this EP.
