Seth Godin On the New Music Industry "The Grateful Dead is the model." Those familiar with Seth Godin and his wisdom in the world of digital marketing and social media will understand the way tribes interact within the music industry. Developments in technology have drastically changed the way musicians are compensated, leading to a shift in the economic framework. Godin spoke in depth with Social Media strategist Ariel Hyatt last week regarding the trend away from selling music itself towards selling the physical live performance. Using [...]

Alright, now that we have established that let's get to the tunes. Rather than bore you with meaningless diction and clever rhetoric which I do not possess, here's what I've been listening to lately and why... These guys are my favorite band of 2010. When I first heard it I finally snapped out of my music lull. Original and fresh, just perfect. Fitz & The Tantrums - Darkest Street Fitz & The Tantrums - Moneygrabber I was very [...]

Stating it out on the very beginning, Euphoria 's sole album Gift From Euphoria is amongst the best psych albums I've ever heard in my life. And I heard quite a few. This US duo, existed for a very short time, released their debut back in 1969. With so many psych albums being released on a day to day basis, the echoing guitars in the streets of LA hadn't really penetrated the studio when Euphoria was playing. I'm saying it just to point out that this is not the typical fuzzed [...]
The folk blues song Sitting on Top of the World has been done by so many great musicians over the years that I thoght I would do a post on it. It was originally written by Walter Vinson and Lonnie Chatmon, core members of the Mississippi Sheiks, a popular country blues band of the 1930s. During the next few years cover-versions of "Sitting on Top of the World" were recorded by a [...]

Recently I've been doing a lot of thinking about bands and their logos. My own band is going through the process of trying to create that perfect image. That one symbol that may not even have text in it, but people still know what it represents...a kick ass band. I'll let you know this is a painstaking process, especially in a band with 7 members (7 schizophrenic sets of opinions). So if you don't have a publicist or creative director to do the brunt work, how does an artist/band (or company) go about creating their logo? What [...]

All Along the Watchtower was written and first recorded by Bob Dylan, for his album John Wesley Harding , which was released on December 27, 1967. It's been covered a load of times, most notably by Jimi Hendrix. It was Hendrix's only Top 40 hit in the US. Rolling Stone once wrote, " Using the line "And the wind began to howl" as a springboard, Hendrix constructed a tumultuous four-part solo that transformed Dylan's concise foreboding into an electric hurricane. Dylan acknowledged Hendrix's masterstroke: His subsequent versions [...]
