Rouge are an all-girl trio whose members include Kelly McMichael from Gentlemen Reg , Jess Tollefsen from Green Go and Emma Tollefsen. I just copied and pasted that line from a pr email, but really, it's a well formed introductory sentence. The group is part Guelph, part Toronto and all about dirty dance beats accompanied by disco inspired synth lines. Reminds me of a local version of defunct UK act Client . Modern Lovers I is a track off their debut 73 and is an extremely polished track that will light up some [...]

Summerworks What: Summerworks Why: Celebrated long-running theatre festival that added a musical component four years ago. Who: In its short run, Summerworks already counts some of the cream of the current Canadian musical crop as its alumnus - this year's class seems certain to add to that list. For specifics, keep reading. When: There will be six nights of live music double-headers running over the course of the festival's week-and-a-bit duration, with the night-by-night breaking down as follows - there's [...]

Frank Yang Hands down, the best thing to happen to NXNE in recent years is the designation of Yonge-Dundas Square as the festival's main stage and making the shows staged there - usually featuring the lineup's biggest names - free for everyone. And what's better is that despite being located in pretty much the most central and public place in the city, there's been no signs that they festival has been concerned about diluting the quality of the performances to be a little more family-friendly; witness last year's near-carnage of Iggy & [...]

My routing when driving to work during the week consists of listening to Mike and Mike in the morning. Their "East Coast" bias is never too large to get in the way of a good story, but the alternative is listening to a mediocre local show on 87.7 the Ticket . Mike and Mike brought up a point that was interesting in the case of Michael Vick. A lot of people expected Vick to be well rested after spending plenty of time in the clink. Those same people didn't expect the second coming of [...]

Diamond Rings - Show Me Your Stuff Diamond Rings - [...]

It's been a few weeks since our last look at remixes here on the hill, so I thought we'd better come back mighty strong for this long weekend edition. Luckily that wasn't too difficult, because today we're featuring the second remix project from Guelph synth-wreckers, Green Go . The Ack was pretty high on GG's initial foray into remixing some songs from a bunch a Canadian indie heavy hitters. I'm pretty sure that he's just as impressed with volume 2, because it's another stellar batch of songs. And songs they are - [...]

This is a band from Ontario that has previously released an album titled Borders , which appears to have only been released as an import and which most of the songs on this forthcoming EP in February seem to have been on. I wasn't familiar with that release until getting a listen at this EP and I have to say I am loving these guys. They have a great sound, great energy, and from searching through a few videos on YouTube they appear to have the live chops to back it up. Now the [...]

Finally the time has come and I reveal to you my Top 10 Canadian albums of 2009. Hope you like what's in store in the Top 10. It was a hard decision, so hope you agree or disagree with this. Three (Volume 1 , 2 , 3 ) – Joel Plaskett 2009 was Joel Plaskett's year just because he released THREE not as just one but three albums in one. How ambitious and epic is that? [...]
Kind of creepy, right? Creepy good though. Although Canadian electro-punk group Green Go may need to tone down the themed band pics, they sure know how to put some serious jams into my ear. Where as some songs conjure up the sounds of Passion Pit dueling My Chemical Romance, others sound ...
