It ain't easy being Greenland. I can remember exactly where I was when I first caught the travel bug. It was 1993, and I was going to Bermuda for a three-day People magazine off-site. It was the first time I'd ever traveled outside of the United States, and as I applied to have a passport quickly issued to me a few weeks before my departure, I wondered what had taken me so long. One night after dinner as I stood on the terrace staring at the Atlantic Ocean [...]
A video release draws attention to an EP that we missed (the clip is "Greenland," from Akat's self-titled debut). This is a brooding collection of tracks, yet rich in color and contrast. Anna Katrin Egilstrøð's dancing vocals owe an acknowledged debt to those of Björk, but the acrobatics never descend into imitation. Stream the EP here , and try "Particles," an urgent, cinematic piece, merging a small-kit electronic drum line with a large, chromatic-scale cello . Also stream the "Greenland" video below. LOL. I thought I'd already written about this album, but the other day I was looking for the review only to discover that I'd completely dropped the ball on it. Greenland is Melting is one of my favorite bands in Florida and very well might be the funnest (is funnest a word?) one to see live. (Caution: Personal anecdote alert!) Sometimes, on twitter, some of my buddies and I play this game we'll call #genericana. The point of the game is to write cliché loaded lines like the ones you'd find in blogs and magazines [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Video , Exclusive Gino DePinto for AOL Great indie music comes from all over the world, and one of the latest and greatest new acts is Greenland's Nive Nielsen and the Deer Children. The group makes beautiful acoustic snowscape tunes that vary across the indie spectrum, with 'Aqqusernit' and 'Tuttakasik' featuring tidbits of New Orleans jazz with a touch of dark folk. [...]
++Though I can't seem to find it on his Twitter anymore, Michael Showalter did an interview/tour of his home and favorite books. I thought he was joking about being proud of having a first edition of The Official Preppy Handbook but it turns out some copies are going for $259.00. ++ Closing Time stays on the mind of many people. THE Indie band of the Post-Rock World. Sounds strange, doesn't it? One genre being defined in another? Some bands don't do it well. Others make history. Recommended by a friend in Australia, Grün was a difficult find. Only released in Australia on iTunes, this duo is the equivalent of a precious stone: hard to find, but worth the world when you finally get it. From the first track, it blows you away with their powerful presence. What once seemed to be a simple post-rock group converts into a electronic band (think Shiny Toy Guns, [...]
Ya I know. Another Autolux post. I swear I only have a few more in me. This one benefits my fellow Montrealers who were planning on attending their first headlining show in our neck of the woods (they opened for Secret Machines and The Raveonettes back in 2005) @ La Sala Rossa (my most favorite venue in town) August 25th. Opening for [...]
Handmade paper masks greeted the guests who attended the house show at The Lodge early last Saturday evening, May 15, to witness the debut performance of Black Telephone , featuring ex-Surge bandmates Holly Tegeler and Rory Carroll along with Tom Collier. That lighthearted spirit carried over to the evening's entertainment, starting with an acoustic performance by Fairweather Underground (Mark Zimin) before Jamie Green and the In Betweens (Greenland frontman Green joined by Collier and drummer Mike Tasevoli) played their first performance. Black Telephone capped off the night with a well-received 40-minute set, complete with a drum machine [...]
